Yes, we have seen in the past that Jonah has been a failure as an actor, a father, and more. He should figure out who is — or should be — important in his life, and what career choices are within his capabilities instead of his unrealistic dreams. Instead, Toni is serving as a parent for her niece, Shannon, far more so than Shannon’s own runaway mother and somewhat more than Jonah who is the often absent father. Toni illustrates love, unselfishness, and having healthy priorities, so lambasting her for not also being a doormat is far from fairness, perceptiveness, or even from good form.

Toni clearly says in the strip “his whole WORLD is theater. Everything else comes second.” She didn’t say: “Why can’t he get into a decent profession?”. – Her lament is not that Jonah acts. rather, it is that she feels he could be more dependable and reliable, and that other people have a life, too, so that they can’t always drop it on the turn of a dime, every time Jonah gets an “itch” (refer to the Oct. 31 2013 strips for further info.).

The way I see it, there’s two possibilities…either Luann’s comparing Quill to Jonah, and thinking she better cut her losses and leave him now, or, as Katherine W says in the second comment, she’s thinking of setting up Prudence and Jonah, thus killing two birds with one stone: getting rid of her perceived competition, AND not having to babysit Shannon so often…

-We will soon see the Luann / Jonah relationship.

No . Jonah and Quill both put theatre before anything else so Luann would be in the same spot all over again, never seeing her boyfriend or having one that as no time for her. 4 her . It would make more sense for her to put Jonah and Pru together and it would solve her problem of getting Quill to herself…. but Quills real love will always be the theatre so If Lu is content as to always playing second fiddle then she will never get past first base with the guy…. well they suggested they got as far as second base .LOL.

Funny for those in the past who suggested or wished Quill turned out to be gay, you could have Quill and Jonah get together…..But I think team Evans dispelled that theory a long time ago.

Remembering that this is not Toni’s daughter or even granddaughter, everything she does should be considered a favor rather than her obligation. It’s the dad’s job to find replacements, not hers. That’s what she’s complaining about – the way he simply dumps his daughter on her.

And his only work so far has been school productions. It’s much harder to find work in the real world. He might turn out to be bad at it compared to professionals.

to be fair. in all perspectives……from what has being shown, Jonah gives even small roles huge importance, of 5 chances, he could decide to not do 1 or 2 so he could be with his daughter more and he shows more than his former GF BUT lot of times he has shown giving parties and such more importance than Shannon, so we can’t compare at this time Q and Jonah………….. and mmmm Pru and Jonah? double edge sword(if pru is into guys) she could improve Jonah. BUT Jonah could make Pru less responsible

Interesting take, although I think the story line’s intent is exactly the reverse. Everytime we see Jonah he exhibits a very quick desire, or agreement to allow Shannon to be taken c/o by Brad and Toni to pursue HIS plans. Remember he is the father. She is the aunt. He is still around, there has not been something that makes it impossible for him to parent. At any rate this arc should come to some kind of head this year I think given the impending wedding, and Jonah is an actor, maybe a stint at the Fuse is in the offing, although his ability as an actor has been in question.

So you’re saying that Toni is equally in the wrong for focusing on her wedding? Toni, unlike her brother, doesn’t have other committments demanding her attention.Shannon is in no way her responsibility, nor is helping Jonah get his career off the ground. Her even getting Luann to babysit is a favor, not an obligation. She doesn’t owe it to Jonah and thus shouldn’t be portrayed as wrong for not wanting to do it.

Wow! So glad I saved the text from the original Wikipedia entry which appeared just two days ago, stating:

    “Jonah Daytona

Toni’s flaky, irresponsible brother and Shannon’s father. He first appeared alongside Toni at a car show where Brad had initially mistaken him for Toni’s boyfriend. Wanting to avoid the responsibilities of being a father as much as possible, Jonah frequently leaves Shannon with his sister, Toni, which often gets in the way of both her job and her relationship with her boyfriend, Brad. He recently had a role in the play “Les Miserables”, and hoped this will lead to his becoming rich and famous. Judging from the collective opinion of Brad, Toni, Quill, and Luann, his acting leaves much to be desired,"

Which I might also add, the above previous entry in Wikipedia was consistent with the strips. – Looks like somebody was busy… “editing”… Wikipedia, to “rewrite history”… Hmm…

IF memory serves, Jonah’s regular job is or was in a restaurant. The regular job pays the bills he covers.

Toni, who is Shannon’s aunt, has often been described as having Shannon living with her far more than with Shannon’s father.

I have nothing against Jonah pursuing acting IF he learns that Shannon needs him more than that does, and if he starts being more courteous toward Toni. For example, he this time was supposed to arrive at a specific time to pick up Shannon and Toni had her own obligations, but when he decided to instead go to an audition he left Toni in the lurch. Once Jonah knew he wanted to go to that audition he could have given warning and himself arranged for a sitter.

Luckily, Toni was able to arrange for Shannon to to be cared for by Luann. Toni fulfilled Shannon’s care needs. Jonah, despite being her father, did not.

Honestly, that character shoukd not have a child. i have no idea if he wanted to have Shannon but once he did he had an adult obligation.

Brad is much more of a father to Shannon than Jonah has been, Toni is more of a mother to her than Shannon’s mother had been, and both are fulfilling their work obligations, too.

Toni and Luann tend to be there to help each other but are courteous and understanding about it, knowing and respecting each other’s lives. That is the way it is supposed to work, instead of one person usuriously thinking eveything shoukd revolve around his desires and dreams.

Okay let’s all calm down here. Anyway, I was the one who made the more recent edit. I thought the “corrected” version was too complimentary and defensive on behalf of Jonah without having any basis in the strip itself, yet I agreed that the original was merely stating opinion as fact. So I changed it, making sure to note that Jonah’s negative qualities were simply others’ viewpoints on him.Apparently my job wasn’t half bad, since nobody has felt the need to change it further.Oh, and I’ve also added some dates for “last appearances” for Jonah and others who haven’t been seen for a while (like Aaron Hill and Ann Eiffel). It’s my day off, people; what else am i supposed to do today?

“That’s how Wikipedia works, anyone can put anything on there and suddenly it’s “fact”, which makes citing it a complete waste of time. The only things worth citing are quotes from the creators and/or the strips themselves.”.At least tangentially related, I was told long ago that while an encyclopedia (Google it to discover what that ancient thing was) isn’t useful to be cited, it usually does cite where to go.

“Until we get to see Jonah’s life, and not what other characters think of him, it’s important to note they are only opinions.”.Imaginary worlds are always essentially opinions. For these, the opinions are based on personal response to the depictions.Personal response is shaped by personal history. Most people’s history is close enough to reach a consensus. Some people have very twisted personal histories and, thus responses outside the norm..For example, most grew up in relatively loving families and accept a touch or hug as a friendly gesture. However, a victim of child abuse or other sexual assault often considers every contact a form of attack.

“. . . I would go edit the Bible. That is extremely offensive given my religion. I flagged that comment and hope a moderator will address it. I will not let you insult me, especially in a religious context..”.Did your insulter know your religion??Many effectively rewrite their religious texts all the time to say what they want it to say..(I was listening to NPR the other day and of the Koran they said both Sunni and Shia use it as their basic text, but don’t agree on the interpretation of a single page..I’ve heard one preacher revise his interpretation of a single scripture three times in a single sermon, all based on misreading in the first place (functionality illiterate, and loudly so.)).

I know of a group who maintain the bible was mistranslated to say what the translators wanted it to say, so they translated it to say what THEY knew it should have said. In some instances they had to add a word of two, which often reversed the meaning, but at least it was finally “correct”.Then they noticed other parts which disagreed with their theology, so they retranslated it with new additions..Eventually it will be perfect. (As defined by them.).

Anyhoo, since it is so common for so many, it isn’t necessarily all that much of an insult. You have to know what you are saying will be offensive.

@Implausible“I just want the moderator to take a hard line ".Most people don’t appreciate others demanding they do EXACTLY what THEY want.Personally, I think it’s cute.I especially like it when a four year old does it.I tend to respond, “YES, MASTER.”They seldom realize I’m telling them they are treating me like a slave but do realize there is a joke in there somewhere. They want me to continue calling them MASTER but tend to be less demanding afterward..Ah, yes, it’s cute in children.

Implausible said, @DavidHuieGreenThe personal insults here must stop."-————————————————I don’t see how any personal insults are possible here.. We don’t know each other. .Nothing can be very personal..Let’s all just ignore the very concept of “insults.”

Lots of interesting onward plots have been suggested by readers..But it’s Saturday and I fear that this sequence will most likely be dropped. .As interesting as he may be, we may have no mention of Jonah for another six months..None of the possibilities cited here may ever be developed..That would be sad. I hope it does not happen.

By my count, you have claimed insults about fifteen times today. Don’t you find this exhausting? For myself, I find all this back and forth very tiring.

Toni said, “Brad will be here”, not “Brad will be home”, so they are not living together and Toni can wear white for her wedding. (Yeah, I believe that, too). And…………why does everyone feel insulted? Implausible, have you insulted me? I don’t think so, not when everyone else pounded me for saying that I can’t stand Shannon. Brad, if you let the in-laws make demands of you now, they’ll always expect it. You will only be as good as your next favor.

And where’s Faith? Did you bickering clowns scare her off? She was the one decent fan who actually seemed to be excited about the comic strip. Stay away Faith, you will be better for it.

“Unless you enjoy over half of the comments being a small group of people going at it. This is a Luann forum, comments should be about Luann, not about people’s personal lives.”

.Everyone is free to read or not read.We quickly learn who is a one track writer and can still enjoy the monotone..

“Anyways, I believe you’re just antagonizing me, as you’ve already alluded to me being abused as a child today. ".Probably am, since you are inclined to be antagonize and always were. Not my intention, though, just noting a fact. The fact you seem to find facts offensive is humerous Mr Trump implausible.Consider your assumption my mention that abused children see assault in a touch or hug must mean you. Nobody’s hugging here.Whatever makes you so inclined to claim to be insulted by incidental references would make sense if it were rooted in some horrible childhood experience. Me not know..“This is the kind of stuff that needs to stop, it’s horrible.”.Stop? Don’t discuss humanity? That’s what Luann is all about..I can’t really agree with, “This is a Luann forum, comments should be about Luann,” since there are other characters in the comic than just Luann.

“Please stop insulting me indirectly”^It gets tiresome, that nobody can say something to somebody else, without someone always accusing someone of insults. Tiresome, indeed.

In fact, I did not say anything insulting about anyone . I said nothing disparaging. I made no obscene remarks, Nothing harmful against anyone, nothing harmful about anyone. – I also find it a bit hypocritical that someone could say things to impugn the strip’s author ( such as a remark about so called “race purging of characters”), and that people can advocate criticism of a strip whenever it suits their own purpose, but yet any other criticism, whether of others or of thoughts, if not in line with the thoughts of someone is suddenly deemed to be an “insult”…..

I don’t think it is too much to expect Jonah to be responsible for arranging child care for his child. Toni is not her mother, she’s her aunt & doesn’t owe Jonah or her niece unfettered access to her time and attention. Also, like any working parent Jonah ought to be aiming for some kind of work/life balance so that he’s the one raising his child.

I’m surprised at how many people are making excuses for Jonah’s neglect of his daughter. He might want to be an actor, but life says that his dreams come second to actually caring for the child he chose to keep. Her mom’s gone. she’s bouncing from person to person & her Dad acts like she’s a pet not a person. Not to mention having an audition isn’t the same as having a paying job. Theater is notoriously low paying which is why so many actors wait tables, baby sit, or have office jobs to pay the bills.

Seriously?!? You think that long spiel about Implausible’s failings adds anything to the comments section. I would suggest to the many of you who seem to utterly despise this Implausible person…. you would be a helluva lot better off ignoring him/her. You just give him/her attention that basically lasts all day long. You think that has you “win”? The reality is people who dispise him should just ignore him. Others, who find his comments interesting, can discuss with him. I tend to like both his comments AND your comments (ABOUT LUANN)…and respond when I feel I can make an interesting point.

“You always perceive any other commenter’s responses to you as insults and personal attacks. In all my years on the board, I honestly have never seen anyone who has pulled near the number of other commenters here on the board into on – line fights.” ^Exactly! And that’s what is at the heart of the matter.

    I have an idea.

Push the strip ten years into the future. Mom and Dad are either dead or in a retirement home, Luann is now teaching, Shannon is now being raised by Brad and Toni and attends the school Luann teaches at, Bernice is the school counselor (having realized she was more like Phelps than she’d originally thought when it was proposed to her by same), Delta comes back as the Congressperson of their district, and all the other characters are gone without need for explanations.

LOL. Looks like you’re in the minority, dude. I got some good thumbs-up here. Besides, I don’t despise the guy; I’m mostly laughing at him and his silly trolling, but I’d prefer that he’d stop it. The problem with the “just ignore and don’t feed the troll” method is that it never works. There is always someone, maybe what a fellow poster here recently called an “unsuspecting newcomer,” who gets ensnared and responds to the troll. There is always someone who is going to respond to him. From that point on, the complexion and flow of the day’s comment thread changes. It’s disrupted, and there is nothing that you can do to bring it back to what it was before, because the troll will keep replying to the people who responded, and then more people will jump in, and on it goes. So, I chose to show him what he is. Oh, he knows what he is already, obviously, but in the course of my doing so, it definitely became obvious also to everyone else here what he is, didn’t it? He did a really, really good job of exposing himself for what he is as a result. Will that make him stop and think about changing, or did it further encourage him? Who knows, who cares. Because the point of this was mainly not for his benefit (though it would be nice). Get it?

Looking at this I get the feeling that Luann is seeing a possible thread into what makes Quill tick. Theater could be just THAT important to him as well. Which may bring other questions to the front for Luann. “Will he ever have time for me.” and “Is this the kind of life style that I want to have from a potential mate.” What kind of Father would he be, would he be like Jonah?!? Is that acceptable to me…

There are many other questions that may fire off this. Time for serious thought and conversation.

Do Toni and her brother have parents? Aren’t grandparents the obvious babysitters these days? Also how does this brother fund his theater-bum lifestyle while still putting food on the table for this child anyway?
