Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for September 07, 2016
Transcript:
Brad: maybe you should take Luann and my mom wedding dress shopping with you. Y'know, a female bonding thing. Toni: Hm. I haven't spent much time with your family... Brad: They'll be your family soon. Toni: Yeah. Wow, in laws.... Toni: It's funny. you get my useless brother, and I get your cool family. Seems unfair. Brad: But I also get. I win.

Don’t forget the trade-off of Shannon and TJ. The real child vs. the man-child.

I wonder whose car they are in. From the previous pictures, it is definitely not Brad’s 1976 – 1979 “Disco Nova”…

Well played, Bradley. Well played.

I just want to say that if Toni goes dress shopping with Luann and Nancy …… they probably aren’t going to leave Shannon in the car.
hankgillette about 8 years ago
“His cool family”? The Evanses probably actually see it that way.
Argythree about 8 years ago
Brad’s suggested shopping trip for the ‘women’ almost guarantees that Toni won’t get the under $200 dress she was hoping for. I can’t see Nancy going to the Goodwill, or a thrift shop.
So, while ‘the ladies’ run up a bill for a dress to be worn once, will Brad and his Dad shop for all those matching tablecloths and napkins and cumberbands and bow ties and top hats and tuxes and table placements and chair banners that Frank regrets so much not having at his wedding?

Some of us were criticizing Brad a few days ago. Now, it seems that he’s really on top of things!
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
A ’75 Nova, to be exact.

It’s sad this story went the safe route. Toni breaking up with him would’ve been a shock, intriguing and in line with her predisposed character before Brad.
comixluver about 8 years ago
If Toni goes to the second hand, and finds something and the ladies (read Nancy) does a little rework, it could be really fab. I bought something off a clearance rack, spend a few weeks and a few yards of this and that, sequins, beads, and had a killer dress for under $20 (the this and that were secondhand recycles).
comixluver about 8 years ago
Also had another thought, they know Gunther, who is back in town and going to Uni. Ask HIM about getting Tony a dress. They got it made.

It is touching how Brad says exactly the right thing in the last panel. While outwardly seeming snarky, it is not only a declaration of love, but it reminds her what this is really about – her and him. Everything and everybody else is secondary.

Satisfaction with a deal depends on how much you want what you get and how much you are willing to pay.

That second panel has me worried. My guess she is going to get cold feet. Brad, dump her like toxic waste.

I wanted a Nova or a Maverick. I had been saving my money for years and had a pretty good down payment. My dad had access to my savings account. He took my money and bought a 66 Bug with a high performance clutch. I was so mad, but I had fun in the Bug, too.I was such a car girl that I could tell you what car was going down the street from inside the house, just by the sound of the engine.

OK, I’m getting a hint that the long-expected 9/11 Wedding has been postponed. In recent times I’ve been binge-catching up, so if anyone can point me to the relevant strip it would be genuinely appreciated.

It is four days until the US commemorates the 15th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, as well as the crashing of a passenger plane in Pennsylvania.
About 3000 children lost a parent that day. Among the many deaths were New York firefighters who entered the towers hoping to rescue others.

Frank: While I am enjoying this arc, I too am looking forward to an update of Luann at school. I typically find both the Pitt CC arcs and the Moony U arcs to be my personal favorites.
Ginny Premium Member about 8 years ago
Brad is becoming my favorite character. He is sweet, actually listens to her, and is very much in love.

7Interesting idea…. Mrs. DeGroot and Luann shopping for wedding dresses under $200 with Toni. To my manner of thinking…. if I were Toni…. that would be a helluva lot more stressful than making decisions with Brad!!!!! :)I would say the DeGroots are “cool” in a very nice, family-friendly way. I am glad Toni finds them that way too. In regards to the Nova issue. To me, the car doesn’t look like Brad’s prior Nova anymore. It may very well be simply Greg altering his drawing of Brad’s car a bit… or could this be Toni’s car, and Brad is simply driving? If not Toni’s car…. perhaps it is TJ’s car? But, in reality, it is not all that important at the moment.

on a similar note, i had a friend who lost her son about a month before her granddaughter was born. So that whole time of year can be hard, especially since her son was only 28, and had an anyeurism.

This is such a poor incentive for marriage. A lot of stress, but no excitement, no romance. At least Toni gave him a hot kiss. That’s all, folks.

http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/01/14The change in wedding date, and the day before has why it can not be at the fire station. As i looked for that i found earlier refs to them wanting to wait before having any kids, and earlier refs to budgeting for the wedding and for living arrangements.

Brad really loves this girl. And as far as Brad having been a slob and not looking so attractive. Brad has grown up as portrayed by Greg Evans drawings.

If he is still driving a car from the 70’s it is a bona fide classic
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
Well, no, you don’t “get” Toni, Brad, but you are fortunate to be able to work on a deepening relationship with a lovely good person. In that sense, you “win”, I suppose.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
Usually it takes me awhile to read all the comments, but I cruised past all of the “Car Talk” contributions, so it was a breeze!

This strip just makes me smile. I’m so glad these two finally talked things out.
and of course – WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING! YES!

Only 101 comments so far today, and many of them on cars. This is a big tip off as to what has happened to the interest level of the arc. “The Thrill is Gone, Babe”. Should be interesting to see what has happened to TJ, the house, Shannon, and Daddy Jonah when Brad and Toni get home. That is assuming that Greg ever decides they need to go home.

RSH about 8 years ago
I give Brad an A for effort but his words are so clumsily chosen. For example to say that dress shopping with Luann and Nancy is a ‘female bonding affair’ seems condescending. A much nicer way to make a similar point would be to say… “hey I’m sure Luann and my Mom would love to help you buy a dress; Luann loves to shop. Would you like me to ask them for you??……..”
RSH about 8 years ago
moreover… Brad just got finished witnessing a near meltdown on toni’s part over wedding plans, and now Brad still can’t shut up about it. It should be obvious to Brad at this point that Toni couldn’t care less about invitations or what to wear. He said he would take care of the plans on his own. he should just shut up and do it unless he wants to see another near meltdown..
Mike Parsons Premium Member about 8 years ago
Brad has come to the inevitable conclusion that all husbands do, and Toni is just lucky, ’cause you really do marry into the whole family, like ’em or not.
luann1212 about 8 years ago
This is so nice that it’s hard for this Trufan to comment (lol). I thought this would be the outcome, I think that Toni was having a panic attack, hitting her where it hurts, given her brother, Shannon, her strong dislike of complications in life, but this kind of thing happens in relationships all the time. If the parties work at it, it will work out. As it did here. It takes love, and concern, and giving to each other, and Brad masterfully did all of that. He transitioned from what he was focused on to what she needed, and he did a great job. I like this panel today also because it reminds that the DeGroots are a really good and stable family, and Toni, and Shannon really need that in their part of Luannverse. But I agree with a few commentators, lets move on.

Cool is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone thinks they are getting the cool new in-laws while their spouse is getting stuck with their crappy family.

I carried a long handled screw driver to adjust the carburetor that constantly vibrated out of adjustment. It spent a lot of time in the shop. One weekend I came home from college to find that Dad had sold my bug to a kid down the street. He bought me a Caprice to replace it. I went from a tiny lavender bug to a huge grey car that the bu would fit in the trunk.
