Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for October 05, 2016
Transcript:
woman: I suggest we being with our bridal questionnaire. Mom: Venue...season..colors...budget... Luann: Can't we just start trying on dresses? Woman: Well, that's one approach. But brides often try 20 gowns just to begin to narrow it down. Mom: 20?! Luann: that's all? toni: What if we just start with one. Like..this one...

you’re going to be a swell mother- and sister-in-law to Toni, Nancy and Luann
Brdshtt Premium Member about 8 years ago
OK, Mabel – you need to let them know at GoComics that there is more than one approach, and they took the wrong one. Now, press the “No Sale” button.

I’m glad I stayed single and never had to be part of that.

From Nancy’s expression it looks like she thinks the questionnaire would be difficult to fill out, yet many people here in this comment page would be able to answer all those questions for Toni. Come on, saleswoman from “Cathy,” give us a challenge.
fretlessman71 about 8 years ago
Anyone else notice that Greg Evans “borrowed” a character from Cathy? It’s the same department store salesperson Cathy encounters on every shopping trip!
DaJellyBelly about 8 years ago
I bet the dress Toni is looking at is very pretty and not a budget breaker!

Good morning guys! .
It’s as though GoComics has taken us back to the early days of the internet when our capabilities were limited! Soldier on, GoComics, take us back to the Arapanet days! We enjoy living in the past!

Where did the name “Mabel” for the saleswoman come from? I thought the saleswoman was always unnamed in Cathy. Was there a strip where she was named?

Well, here I am, still stuck in a ladies’ dress shop. In real life, its called a “stress test”, usually administered by your wife. Why can’t we just go over to Victoria’s Secret and watch Tiffany try on a few things?
JR0602 about 8 years ago
While Nancy and Luann are in shock, I think Toni may be onto something, like her dress. Her expression says that she found something she likes.

I was just tipped off to the changes GoComics has made. Since they appear to be regressing rather than progressing, this will be my last post on any of their comics. I’m likely not even going to bother reading comments any more either, since there is no hope for discussion. I’ll miss a lot of you. Bye.

Cathy: is this all you have? This clerk: Everything we have is right there. Cathy: Are you sure? TC: no, you’re right. We’ve got a whole bunch of merchandise we don’t make available to the general public. Come with me. Cathy: (standing in alley a few moments later) Hey!

My last thought of the evening here. What they have done to the board reminds me of a sign that used to hang in the electronics lab:

Now Toni will hold the dress up to her body and everyone is going to love it. But Toni will have her back to us as she holds the dress for the others to see and we won’t know what it looks like until the wedding.

I like how Greg has got the drawing of Cathy’s sales lady right down to the fine details- her weird, distorted hands!
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
If we do an alternate site, my last words on this one will be rated X
kenhense about 8 years ago
I think the sales lady was borrowed from the great cartoon “Kathy.” I remember the sales lady in Kathy looking like that.
jdi801 about 8 years ago
Is that from Cathy, or is it Charlie Brown in drag?

Toni is my kind of shopper.

Did anyone else notice they copied the salesclerk from cathy? This is like the time the cab deiver from peru was copied for the cab driver in new york!

My in-laws made it cheap and easy on my then-fiancée: Her mother made the dress, and it was gorgeous. Of course, my wife would have looked gorgeous in just about anything!
LoriRN1963 about 8 years ago
We wont see the dress until the big reveal at the wedding. I anticipate it to be very simple and elegant. No lace or bling.
Dawn Hall about 8 years ago
Has anyone else noticed that this bridal dress clerk resembles the sales clerk from the ‘Cathy’ strip (even down to the pencil in her hair)?
ralphhenry about 8 years ago
The way he drew the sale person reminded me of the old LuLu comic strip.

Argythree, best of luck w the storm. Hopefully, those around you will listen to the good advice, but that before that you yourself can lay in sufficient battery lighting, batteries, water and other potable fluids, foods that do not need refrigeration or cooking, etc. Hopefully, they respect wind, waves, and storm surge. This one has had vertical wind columns and red sprites, plus much lightening.

Toni shops like I do. Flips thru the rack and homes in on one item that appeals to her. My DD did almost the same thing. You just know. That said, sometimes you do have to try on a few things to make sure. And it’s true, sometimes a dress will look better on the body than on the hanger.

This stuff can not be made up. Looking for Andrew McMeel Universal CFO mailing info (parent company of Uclick which is parent company of GoComics) and found that TODAY it had some building facade problems endangering pedestrians.
luann1212 about 8 years ago
I wonder if Toni finds the perfect dress on the first try. It’s possible, although (and please don’t jump on me for perpetrating a sexist stereotype) women generally check out several items of any items of clothing they wear to normal, but particularly special occasions before they make a decision. Toni might prove to be an exception to that stereotype, or just lucky for love a first sight.

I tried on two – the one I wanted (simple, tea-length), and the one that made my mom, sister, and aunt cry (hoop skirt, lacy, voluminous ruffles). “We” got the latter. I never “preserved” it. I don’t even know where it is.

The saleswoman is ripped directly from the saleswoman in Cathy. She even has the pencil stuck in her head. http://cdn.comixology.com/assets/cathy_shopping.jpg

1. GoComics are pond scum.2. Did anyone notice the sales clerk from Cathy … That was for peer approval here.. Now back to commenting on the strip. I love the demeanor of Toni. She doesn’t get caught up in Luann’s excitement, or the Bridal Barn paperwork, just trusts her own eyes and taste. Yes, I am beginning to have a crush on her.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
Well, I am off to take my wife in for eye surgery. Wish her luck!

It makes sense that Toni will find a dress, her perfect dress, immediately without a lot of nonsense. It really does happen that way sometimes. (Yea, I was one of them, first place I stopped, saw the dress on someone else first, tried it on, and that was it, only dress I tried and it was perfect. Also was not a budget buster too!)

Day Two: Still no “AAAACK!!!”
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 8 years ago
I wrote a letter to GoComics and received the same response of others… with the list of the changes that was printed here yesterday. Today, I will write again, and hope that I get a personal reply. Today my focus will be on how the “Twitterization” of our community here does not really seem to make sense in regards to their goals to fight abuse from spammers. I hope that if we all keep asking them to rescind this draconian change, they may listen.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 8 years ago
And, since I am likely setting myself up to be told “Then shut up and talk less!” by some folks here… I will add that to me, talking about the ideas of what is going on and what it may mean is a fun hobby/distraction and for me has created a sense of community. I will be sad to lose it.

Continuation. Andrews McMeel Universal is in Kansas City, MO. I do not yet know if the address for polite and reasoned physical letters, which are ALWAYS the most effective approach should be send to the location at the corner of 12th and Walnut or if a different mailing address is used. If i do not find one then use that for the address. I am also planning to look fir CFO and CEO names for that, but not enough free time yet.

JayBluE about 8 years ago
(Iffy:) True, of course!!! It’s all a matter of relativity, subjection and personal preference! It’s why I do so many (apart from a slight experiment I was doing with today’s). Sometimes I try to “anticipate” what various ones here usually express in regard to what their thought process delves into, and try to be inclusive of those…

That bridal consultant looks more like a character out of the Cathy comic strip than one out of Luann.

Maybe you should follow your own advice. Civility seems to not be in your lexicon.

Toni will try on one dress and say ‘this is fine I’ll take it’, and that will disappoint both Luann and the store lady who want to drag the process out as long as possible.

Indeed, Luann’s weird out of control obsession with Toni’s wedding and her dress is puzzling. I wondered if it could be related to Luann’s interest in sketching and designing things (i.e. assignment for Zebo’s class) but she became giddy the minute Toni called up to ask for help. Hopefully all this will be revealed, unless Luann is just getting weirder and more impulsive as time (and the strip) goes on… Even Nancy seemed puzzled by it all.

I would like to bid everyone adieu. Due to GoComics’ recent draconian changes in restricting the amount of characters that can be in each comment I will no longer read or post comments.
