Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for February 05, 2017
Transcript:
professor: let's consider this work by picasso, "l'acrobate." luann, what does this piece say to you? luann: uh... professor: uh? luann: i'm sorry professor zebo. but it doesn't say anything to me. i don't even get why it's "art" professor: i see, well. perhaps picasso was speaking to someone with a more aesthetic appreciation guy: no, i don't get it either guy2: he said aesthetic not athletic

Itâs clear to me the Acrobat insulted Mike Tyson to his face.

Probably anything intended to be art could be called art. The way each person responds to it (or doesnât) is the next step. For me, âLuannâ â through visuals and theater â makes me feel like I actually know these people who donât existâŠ

It could mean one of several thing1) " God bless you"2) " Did you get the number of that truck?" 3) " I donât recommend Dr. Johnson" 4) " I donât really mean for you to put your head there "5) " I didnât see that one in the Kama Sutra !"

Apparently, Picasso was the real inventor of QWOP.

Perhaps if Luann had paid more attention in Spanish Class. Sheâs equally confused at Luann en Español.
dlkrueger33 about 8 years ago
Why is Luann STILL in that class? ART APPRECIATION 101 â and seems like sheâs been in it for two years already. Maybe she has to repeat the class until she fully APPRECIATES art?

I would not in least mind finding a signed Picasso at a yard sale for two bucks. Then sell it for mega bucks. Own oneââno thanks.
ravonlea about 8 years ago
I am not a big fan of Picasso, but yet I can appreciate the form, flexibility, balance and line of the subject⊠and how the artists tries to depict the flexibility of the human body. In that sense it is both aesthetic and athletic ⊠so having Jack answer ( even though he doesnât get it ) is appropriate . Cute word play between aesthetic and athletic ⊠and isnât word play an art form in itself? :P

I guess the romance is gone; once upon a time, Luann could do nothing wrong in Zeboâs class.

My eldest daughter, who was four or five at the time, once announced â quite loudly, of course â that she had drawn âsomething like thatâ in kindergarten. So much for Picasso.

Luann, Iâm SURPRISED at You! THAT painting IS a representative of the CONSTERNATION/JOY, of Loyal Readers when They out that Tomorrowâs Strip has Jumped to a COMPLETELY New Story LineâŠ.

Someone wise once said âI may not know art, but I know what I like.â
beb01 about 8 years ago
Most cartoonists, when they want to retire just write âThe Endâ to their last strip. Egan seems to be trying to drive away his last fans first with these horrible storylines and obnoxious characters.
magnus about 8 years ago
Art is subjective, it depends on whether or not you have a degree in art or are famous, the quality of the painting is not important, the proof of this is when it takes a chemical analysis of the paint to determine if a painting is of value as art. If the analysis determines that a suspected masterpiece has modern components in the pigment, then it does not matter how good it is, it is just a fake.
SweetSinger about 8 years ago
This art class is getting tedious. As though she keeps flunking and taking it again. Greg, itâs time for Luann to broaden her horizons!
luann1212 about 8 years ago
I donât get Picasso either, but the very fact that his art forces one to look at it and wonder what the hell it says or means makes it great. Remember though I live in Chicago, and we have the Picasso sculpture in the Daley Center (the 600 foot Main state courthouse for Cook County) and we are ready to defend it to the death. We hated it at first, but now it is as Chicago, as Chicago being in Carl Sandburgâs famous poem, hog butcher of the world, although we have not had a stockyards for about 60 years. In fact Pabloâs work has inspired all kinds of public art all over the place in this burg, so maybe that is one of the important things.
Now, that being said, will we resolve the arc we have been following almost a month now? Or will GE and Co., leave us hanging?

Modern art is an Emperorâs New Clothes situation. They make a mess with paint, or whatever, charge big bucks for it, and if you donât play along with the game, itâs just because you are too dumb to appreciate it. If I could do whatever is on that canvas myself, it ainât art.

I aesthetically admire the strength, grace and flexibility of many athletes. So I am a member of the Aesthetic, Athleticsâ Appreciation Society (AAAâS) for short.

It says nothing to Luann because she didnât turn around to see it. Itâs mostly behind her.

I love that âGoth characterâ. That boy is really smart and witty. Wish he and Luann could be in other classes together. Maybe he is the frog that turns into the prince in the future.
sueb1863 about 8 years ago
Is this Luannâs ONLY class? Shouldnât she be in more advanced classes by now?
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
It says to me⊠He is trying to do, what dogs can and we canât!
Airman about 8 years ago
Mr. Picasso was creating a box cover for the game Twister. It is not good art, but like the Emperorâs New Clothes, or political correctness, people were/are afraid to contradict crap with their own good sense. Could you call it âthe bandwagon syndromeâ? All aboard.
Germanshepherds4ever about 8 years ago
? Sheâs still in the same class with the same people for another year? Uh oh.
timbob2313 Premium Member about 8 years ago
Do not like any modern art. Says nothing to me other than there are a whole lot of very gullible people who think they see something and are determined to tell everyone else what they think
JanLC about 8 years ago
I remember reading once that Picasso was laughing his head off at the art critics of the day. The more they praised his work, the more outlandish he made it on purpose, just to see how far they would go. There was a lot more to the article, but it made me laugh out loud at the art snobs who think they are so elite.
Code the Enforcer about 8 years ago
From this art class bit, I still get this âLarry-Moe-Curlyâ feeling about it: Luaan as âLarryâ, Jack/Jock as a not-bald âCurlyâ and Emo/Goth as âMoeâ, while Prof. Zebo is the typical uptight, straight man character.
-
As for the painting? While it may display qualities of surrealism and biomorphism, it says to me, âThis guy needs a chiroprator, STAT!â
Code the Enforcer about 8 years ago
I meant âchiropractorâ.

These comments are tiresome. All too easy to mock a genius like Picasso. If you hate all his work, thatâs okay, but then go find someone you like, or stick with realism or photography.

When I took art history a professor asked, âWhat was the artist thinkingâ . A student actually replied, âDamn, I hope I can sell this to have some money for rentâ.

Can anyone read the writing on Zeboâs ascot? Looks like itâs saying âNa NAâ !
Sisyphos about 8 years ago
Doesnât matter what it means to Luann, Professor ZĂ©bo. It was just a way to make a little money. Old Pablo would grind them out by the dozens and laugh all the way to the bank. (Other studentsâ opinions not withstanding.)

As if thereâs a differenceâŠ.
RSH about 8 years ago
Why canât Luann come up with a more thoughtful answer? Itâs nice that she is honest. But any painting should say something to the viewer even if it is negative. Luann has made many sketches for this class; Zebo never said âOH I canât figure out why thatâs even artâ She even tried to pass a dress off as âartâ. Despite all of this, she is unable to look at a painting of a figure and make a comment.
dadoctah about 8 years ago
ZĂ©boâs outfit makes a statement. Unfortunately for him, that statement is âI got dressed in the darkâ.
Schrodinger's Dog about 8 years ago
maybe this spring weâll see Luann in a different class again.
