That long panel where Tommy and his women see each other across the expanse of snow is my all time favorite. Just thinking about it makes me tear up, and I am not one who cries easily.
Alert! Unless you were in the neutering discussion on yesterday’s thread, don’t read the replies. You have been warned! Thank you. ( I don’t like going off topic on boards, but I feel I have to make something clear.)
Back by the volunteer coordinator’s office there’s a pair of signs about the impact of not neutering/spaying. ‘How Do You Produce 2 million Dogs?’ and ‘How Do You Produce 80 million Cats?’ Those are the results of one pair of animals & their offspring reproducing for 10 years.
Dear orbster buddies! Wishing you all a world of kindness in a world seemingly bent on hate.
Please remember that we are trying to have a safe blog here, where people can come together in mutual support & love of kitties, critters & the people who love them!
You have a right to your opinions, but to hurl accusations and innuendos doesn’t sound Tommy-like at all!
Again, PLEASE! If you don’t care for something, simply don’t "like"it. If it goes outside the limits of propriety & seems wrong to you, flag it.
No venom. There’s plenty of it in the rest of the world. We’ve been tested these last two days on a highly volatile subject. Let’s just take the Tommy approach. What would he do? >^.,.^<
Orb bumps for the friendly & compassionate! Georgia, my orb is firmly behind yours! :-)
He’s almost HOME! He and his woman will have a wonderful Christmas together. He will be warm and cozy, and sleep on the foot of the bed. He will hear what a very good boy he is as his woman scratches behind his ear.And he will have ham.
Wow! That last panel is just SO powerful! Love, love, love… And Tommy’s woman’s face in the first panel – you can tell she’s seriously worried this might be a false alarm.
And I also want to let all you orbsters know how necessary you are! We have a peacekeeping and mercy mission we can’t shirk. We’ll work around obstacles until erosion wears them away or they roll off in the void. Love MUST win! Our orbabies are counting on us! Peace and solace, dear friends! >^.,.^<
I love this final panel too but it brings back bittersweet memories. 28 years ago I had a sweet kitty with wanderlust in his heart. One winter I was very ill and he managed to slip out and disappear. We were all distraught and those who could looked everywhere. Then one day he reappeared in the back yard! But joy turned to tears because he was now very sick. But at least he had a few more days of love, hugs, ear skritches and good boys before the vet gently eased him over the rainbow bridge. And, also comforting, we knew he had that time and we knew his fate. Continued uncertainty mixed with hope never realized is so much worse. So hurrah for Tommy and his Woman and good hopes to all kitties who need loving homes.
I had imagined that the second panel would have taken two and the strip ends with panel three. Would love to hear Georgia talk about the choices she made in editing and pacing.
…as I said in 2015…“panel 4 – Georgia’s rendering of the look on Tommy’s face – disbelief and hope all at the same time – absolutely brilliant…it put a lump in my throat…”
I only learned of this wonderful strip when it started running in the Raleigh paper last fall, and soon after that, I became hooked! I am glad to find BCN here, because the small newspaper size does not do justice to this beautifully drawn and magical strip. I love it, and can’t wait for my Christmas present! (A Tommy pin!) :-)
Last night I watched a number of Christmas classics, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Charlie Brown, Rudolph and Santa Clause is Coming to Town, and read the three classic BCN Christmas specials. :)
The last panel reminds me rather forcibly of my experience with 8-ball, our Little Viking. Except for the snow, it’s almost identical to my finding him, over ten miles away, two months after he disappeared. I haven’t used the zoom on the page yet. If I had, I couldn’t type this. Aw doggone it, now the screen’s all blurry …
I liked what Gent just posted about BCN should be a cartoon. But wouldn’t it be way cool if someday BCN became an animated film? Who do you all think should be the voices of the the three good boys? And the Woman and Man? And Tommy and – well I’ll stop there so as not to post a possible spoiler. Merry Christmas all!
When the original strip appeared, that third panel was the reveal of Tommy’s name. Until that moment when his woman called out to him, he was just “that backyard cat.” I’m sorry that I was one of many who mentioned his name when he first appeared and spoiled that reveal for newcomers.
said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter
may have nestled its way into his mighty throat. Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank downthe cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine.Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator.Tommy the cat had many a story to tellbut it was a rare occasion such as this that he did.

If you are a paid subscriber the Saturday strip is in your email along with a bunch of others that are also not updated on this site. I have sent an inquiry email to the site team but as it is Saturday and Monday is a holiday I have no idea when I might get an answer. Wish so much I could send it to all of you. At this point I don’t suppose it is too much of a spoiler to say it is a wonderful reunion.
Time has frozen, as Tommy and his woman see each other. Their entire life together flashes before their eyes during this brief interval of time, which appears elongated to us external observers because of a strong disturbance in the space-time continuum. Yes, happy ripples can cause that, suggest the experts of the Cat Science Network.
DEE K GC INSIDER 10 MINUTES AGO@GentWhy are you now trying to demonize me? Everyone here knows I’m far from being a troll…and let me remind you that you are the one who started all this—you are the one who called our orbster Elettaria a “hate monger!” Yes, YOU are the first one here who used the “hate speech” you claim to be so offended by! You owe me an apology.
@DEE K , There has been a lot of hate speech hurled at me since yesterday, which you also ignore conveniently. You are the one who has been trying to spread the most hatred against me by repeatedly making similar comments multiple times since yesterday. And now you have the audacity to rake up the matter again. I am not going to respond to you or trolls like you anymore, no matter how many times you copy paste and repeat your hate propaganda against me.
When my Assistance Dog was much younger and we were volunteering at the church garden (an unfenced backyard of a house near the church that houses several programs) something happened that really scared my girl and she apparently ran straight back and out of her collar (which was fitted appropriately, she’s just a breed whose head shape allows it, and her current working vest is designed to work as a harness). Her fear had her running like the wind; my disability means I cannot run. One volunteer who is good with dogs took off running (I told the rest having a herd of strange humans chasing a Sheltie isn’t helpful) and, because it was also the weekend other volunteers were picking up litter, texts went out. Several recognized Chloe without the texts, and knew to at least try to get her towards the church if they couldn’t catch her, because the grey Sheltie in the blue vest was familiar. I remember the moment I fell to my knees, assisted by the woman who had followed me with my wheelchair, and who had noted I’d stopped hearing her (she didn’t know it, but I have Aspergers as well as a physical disability). I did suddenly hear “Jennifer- call her!” and looked to see that she was across the empty block (2 buildings in bad shape had been bought and torn down by the church, they are now more garden space). Chloe is a Sheltie. Shelties do not do well as strays- their breed standard actually mentions their shyness. When such breeds are tested for things like the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen the tester is to take into account that no, the dog is sitting for petting by a stranger only because their human is there and told them to. I could name the people who have not at some point lived in this house and aren’t vets who have touched her. Yeah, she’s a working dog, but regular visitors to the house are watched from a safe distance.
You do realize that people across the country – nay, the world – were holding their breath for twenty-four hours after that last panel above, don’t you?
