Hoo Boy. Jack is trying hard to be a gentleman and a nice guy. Unfortunately I fear Jack may have landed in Luannās: āHeās a nice guy, BUT,ā category that was once occupied by Guntherā¦ā¦,
At least thereās a spare ā and the spare isnāt flat ā and they were able to retrieve it from itās storage location. Ok ā as @Mordy says ā Jackās polite ; tries to please; and knows what he can or canāt do and is an extrovert. He seems able to be an extrovert that keeps other peoples feelings in mind too. Not the worst person in the world to date. Would have thought that Jack / Tara would have been an more obvious pairing though, but letsā see where things go.
Well, you do know how to be helpful, Jack. Do watch her change tire so you can do it yourself next time. That is how most of people learn ā by watching others. Make a good use of your time standing next to Luann and turn this calamity into a good day because you learned how tires are changed.
Shout out to Schrodingerās Dog: So sorry for the mess someone made for you yesterday! For me, if it werenāt for VilyEhm ās posts, Iād have never knew what was going on!
By the by, I miss that old picture with the dogās head sticking out of a box!
I intended to be in bed an hour ago, but two glasses of gewurtztaminer and fascinating insights into Jackās personality and Iām going to find it hard to get up in the morning. Fascinating options here fir Luann and Jack. This evening I sat on the screened verandah of our senior independent living facility and cuddled with my husband and wondered what it is about rain that is so romantic. We are still newly weds of seven years next month (He is 87 and iāll be 84 in a couple of weeks) and rain drops still make me want to kiss him tenderly. Iām projecting my feelings to our heroine and Jack thinking this may be one of those long term memories. Enjoy the moment.
Iām not sure who predicted that Luannās pants would rip open at the back ā it wouldnāt be the first time but I canāt find the relevant strip. However they seem pretty solid. Next time sweetie wear tighter trousers.
Except that this is the point where you SHARE your knowledge. Jack has the muscle and the will; tell him what to do, and let him get on with it. A jack, four nuts and a couple of wheels isnāt exactly rocket science.
Iām glad that Jack is taking it well that heās helpless and Luann isnāt, but sheās being a little thoughtless. Why doesnāt she show him how to do it, so he can do it himself some other time? Among other things, if she did, heād think of her every time he changed a tire.
When Iām at work, Iām usually the oldest person in the store, and itās always amazing how many of the people I work with never learned to do the simple sort of mechanical stuff. Theyāre not dumb-theyāve just never been taught. Changing a tire should be basic, as should replacing a bulb (assuming you donāt have one of those cars where youāve got to pull half the engine out to get to it). A couple of years ago my car started overheating while heading back from an out of town work assignment, and I told them that I caught it early and made it back home by slowing down and cranking the heater up. Most of them thought that turning on the heater would make the overheating worse, because nobody ever told them that the heater core in a car is effectively a small radiator.
I guess itās one advantage of growing up pretty poor-you learn to do a lot of stuff yourself because you donāt have the luxury of paying someone to do it.
God such inane comments, but being inane is a privilege when commenting on a comic strip. So my inane comment is that this is a set up for long-term romance her, perhaps THE long-term romance of Luannās life, and that of Jack. He is a gentleman, who thinks of doing something for her while he gets soaked. That simple act is the HUGE difference between how any of the other romantic interests have acted with Luann; usually they might like her, but they are selfishly putting their interests before herās. Quill was the latest example, and his selfishness was the reason Luann broke up with him. Much younger and Aaron Hill hardly knew she existed, and when he finally did, diffidence was the best way to describe how he expressed his (lack) of feelings for her or to her. Jack is different. He is attractive (not a monster as some silly comments have stated) and caring so I think there is quite a bit there there here.
This is a role reversal ploy to get them together and I think people are just overanalyzing it. Jack is presented as a nice guy. Why do people hate that fact?
Throughout the years of the Luann strip, the title character never expressed any interest in what her brother was forever doing underneath the hood of his automobile, and Brad never showed any interest in teaching Luann about cars or about anything else. So who is it that has now re-written Luann history ā Greg or Karen?
Itās tough for a big guy to feel inadequate. Heās trying to compensate. Once again showing that, at heart, heās really a ānice guy.ā Even though that wonāt get him the girl. Heāll wind up being the anti-Gunther. Everyone knows theyāre ānice guys,ā but they rarely wind up with the girl. Girls like to date them because they feel safe.
So excellent, Greg! Role reversal, without being threatening, for the masses. And good for Luann for being empowered (albeit grubby!) Bravo & wonderful.
Now I REALLY love Jack! He is an old school gentleman. He may not know how to change a tire but he is still interested in Luanneās comfort. Look how happy he looks to be doing something to help her! Heās rough around th edges but heās definitely a Keeper.
Oh , please show Jack as being intelligent, he is taking art. Maybe a potter? My son is a potter and they get pretty buff. Have to be if you are centering 30 pounds of clay.
Well, Jack the Gallant is here to help! And he deserves some cred for helping someone whoās helping him! Keep in mind, he is a football guy ā so something drilled in is that, āItās a TEAM effort!!ā Thatās what he knows and does, with a smile to boot!
Iām enjoying this little ārole reversalā type comic, and hoping there will be no injuries to either of them! Not sure why this little episode would automatically result in a romance, but probably more friendship (just like the bowling sort of did). And @SCHRODINGERāS REAL DOG:, the new icon is a friendly looking guy, but I, too, miss the dog in the box.
I fell in love with a man when my car had a flat in the rain, and he sat inside the car while I changed the wheel.
Iād have enough of men putting me on a pedestal. I was happy to be with a man who respected me as a competent adult and trusted me to know how to do a job.
So letās see, he accidentally hurt Luann when they were BOTH horsing around. HE took her to ER. HE drove her to and from work. HE bought her flowers. In this arc he has done nothing profane, mean, or stupid. GASP!!! HIS CAR got a flat. He admitted he did not know how to change it BUT he did have a roadside assistance plan so not completely clueless. Luann offered to change the tire, so he let her, and he offered to help, AND he is trying to see to her relative comfort. So it follows: He MUST be an idiot. (sarcasm provided etcā¦)
I like that Jack doesnāt appear to be threatened at all. So many fiction writers are convinced that Men are uncomfortable if women are at all capable but theyāre not writing him that way at all. He genuinely just seems to want to find some way he can help her.
Even though I really like todayās storyā¦ I just had a thought about an alternative story that could have been portrayed that would also have been nice for a different reasonā¦ Greg could have show Luann TEACHING Jack and guiding Jack through the tire changing process. If Greg had selected that story, it could have further suggested teaching as a career choice for Luannā¦ which has been suggested by several here due to other arcs we have seen.
The comments about Luann teaching Jack are making me envision a scenario wherein Luann is behind him, her body pressed close to his, and she is guiding his arms and hands through the movements of turning the lug nuts with the wrench and removing the tire while āUnchained Melodyā is playing on the radio in the truck. Much like the pottery wheel scene in āGhostāā¦

I have to say, Luann, sitting cross-legged is not the best position for changing a tire.
Take it from me, a female, who has also changed tires (gasp-! They can do that?)
