THIS! THIS, is why you need place of your own G-Man!
Oh, and If ANYONE thinks that Le$ is going to be charitable when he talks about Gunther to Tiffany, then guess again.
And one MORE thing: What “IF,” and that is a BIG IF, Gunther were to “Cowboy Up,” and tell Tiffany EXACTLLY how he feels about her? Gunther is a guy Tiffany trusts, so he has no reason to Lie to her about his feelings for her. But HOW would Tiffany handle that? Could She handle that? After all these years of being Lonely, here’s a guy that says he’s actually kinda in love with you. Short of busting out laughing, how would Tiff react?
Now if you’ll excuse I have to brew some COFFEE and up my Blood Pressure Meds. From the looks of things, It’s gonna be a long trying week…..,
It must have been real fun drawing all those hearts onto Tiffany’s outfit and keeping them straight…though given how they don’t bend with her clothes, they seem to just be a separate layer or fill and not actually drawn on one by one.
That little bit of shaving cream is off Gunther’s face now. If him shaving represented a metaphorical transformation, then that transformation must be complete. Now Gunther is being protective of Tiffany just as Brad was of Toni when Brad was going through a transformation.
I give up. I thought I saw a glimmer of hope Saturday. I was wrong. Sorry, everyone.
Be independent. Get a high paying job (you have the skills to do so.) Move to your own apartment. Buy your own furniture. Work out and get some muscle. Figure out what kind of man you want to be, and go after it with singleminded purpose. If you still can’t handle life with other people, be a solitary man until you can.
Hey – We are not told exactly how old the characters are, but for gawds sake Tiffany is probably 19 or 20 – not 12. We need a big breakthrough – soon – to keep this arc from drifting into ridiculous. Maybe the moment of truth is here, if Tiffany replies, “Gunther, you are jealous, aren’t you?” Gunther’s newly shaved skin might turn reddish as he struggles for a reply. Then Tiff could just lean over and give Gunther a nice kiss – maybe the best one he’s ever had. Then at 8:00 PM, Gunther should just go next door and let Mom fix him some dessert.
Wait for it. What we do not know, but it hilarity will ensue. Romance might not be in the picture, but that is the what. So wait for it, then pounce on whatever it is people. (lol).
Tiffany has been trying to tell Gunther that it is not the way he thinks it is, and that she is sorry she’s having deddert with Les, but that clod, Gunther has his own ideas that have formed a roadblock in his head. Now, Tiffany is approaching the point where she’s had enough of him and his childish ways, along with the fact that he is not listening at all. Run away, Tiffany; you deserve better than these two dipsticks!
Guys, give Gunther some credit – he said that because he cares about Tiffany – he doesn’t want to see her being used. It might, or not, backfire on him. In real life, it is far likely it will bite in his ass, but we are reading in Luanniverse so…Tiffany might take it differently as in that she thanks Gunther for the warning and cancels the dessert.
What would make this work is if Tiffany learns that Gunther is correct when it it is dessert time and she finds Leslie has sprayed himself with whipped cream and put a cherry on top.
At least Gunther is a cultured “clod” (TeaFanny’s description.) Tiffany may never have another chance to enjoy a home cooked, five course dinner prepared by someone who cares enough for her to go to that much trouble. She threw away something very special by making that appointment with Less right in the middle of her date with Gunther.
In formalized dining events, five course dinners are carefully planned to complement each other. The courses are smaller and spread out over a long evening, three to five hours long. They follow conventions of menu planning that have been established over many years. Most courses in the most formal full-course dinners are usually paired with a different wine, beer, liqueur, or other spirit. A five course dinner is a work of art which shouldn’t be trivialized. Tiffany should have taken that into account.
I’m very frustrated with Gunther, but he is cultured, and he knows things that Tiffany doesn’t know. It’s refreshing to see that in a modern male.
Like I have said before, the arcs with Tiffany in them really drive the comment count up. The last three days of this arc prove that once again. Go Tiffany!!
No, I mean really go, Tiffany. Get out of there now!
Gunther really wants to protect Tiffany. But she’s an adult who knows how to protect herself and, evidently, can’t stand that kind of advices AND that childish jealousy.
Tiffany will never get into a real relationship because she is Tiffany. Her story lines are important to the strip and putting her in a relationship would ruin future story lines.
“Him him him, what’s she gonna do about him? She’s gonna have to live without him, It’s him or it’s me, me me,No one gets to get it for freeIt’s me or it’s him.” - Rupert Holmes
He did this before, right after the dinner at his Mom’s house when Les gave Tiffany his phone number. Gunther took Tiff back to her dorm and really tore into her, about her placing too much importance on her physical appearance and how she would be a really shallow person to get involved with Les. He left her in tears, and she immediately started her binge of overeating. Of course Gunther has to tell Tiffany how to run her life, since he’s done such a wonderful job of running his own!
You know, Tiffany is doing well with the bean bag chairs.I like that they talk. I can be charitable and say Gunther’s forewarning Tiffany. Maybe Les is all talk, maybe he’s not. Make another day with her, Gunther.
It is frustrating watching Gunther waste his time with Tiffany. It is annoying watching Gunther use inappropriate language (He should not have said “But… you need to cancel with Les.” which was telling Tiffany what to do… instead he should have said “But… please, next time… it would be far more enjoyable if you did not plan dessert with Les immediately afterwards.”).
Even though today was frustrating as hell in many ways…. I do also have to say I think this was exceptionally well written. Even though I am disappointed in Gunther…. his reactions… his own frustrations and sadness at the situation…. all have colored his behavior in very, very legitimate, and understandable ways. I just wish he would have been able to see outside of his own hurts to see what he COULD do instead. But, I guess that is not the level of insight or maturity that Gunther has developed yet…. it is indeed a learning experience, this path of life.
Both TeaFanny and Seismic are assuming that Tiffany started her overeating binge solely because Gunther rejected her. For many of us, our conclusion had been that Tiffany fell into a depression and started overeating because her already poor relationship with her father became worse, due to Ann Awful entering her father’s life. I still believe that. If Gunther’s problems are all to be blamed on him being hopelessly ‘imprinted’ on his mother (and as someone who was raised for part of vital years by a widowed mother and didn’t end up like Gunther, I don’t buy that), then a lot of what is wrong with Tiffany can be explained by the fact that she is always trying to get ’daddy’s’ approval and attention, and mostly not getting attention…
How sorry is she? She’s the one who scheduled this mess! In that sense, it doesn’t make much sense for Gunther to warn Tiffany about Les. However, we all know what a scumbag Les is. But the problem is, GnK continue to portray Gunther as the most unlikable character in this strip.
Frankly, with the loss of Luann in this strip, Gunther ought to be the new hero. But GnK continue to paint him as the zero!
Sheriff Mordecai mentioned above, that Gunther is “momma-imprinted.”
Actually Irma, Gunther’s Mom, could be part of the solution to her son’s “problem.” Year’s ago, she once “kicked him out of the nest” and encouraged him to follow Rosa to Peru. If Irma really Loves Gunther (And Yes, She REALLY Does) She should use a bit of tough love and kick him out of the nest again. THIS Time HARD. It was a big mistake to insist that he live near her in a “tiger cage” with Le$. If she wants for her son’s happiness, (and eventually grand kids) then it’s time for her to cut the umbilical, ONCE AND FOR ALL.
Also, Gunther needs to meet someone WORSE off that he is. He needs to take a trip to the local children’s hospital and visit kids suffering with cancer. Maybe THAT will change his “Why doesn’t the world Pity ME?” Attitude and he’d finally buck up and realize how good he’s really got it. And maybe put that vast intellect of his and help find a CURE.
Finally, Gunther really needs a “father figure” in his life and Al ain’t it. But maybe some other adult he can talk to, to give him some good, sound, advice. Like his old friend, Mrs Horner, maybe.
From Luanntime immemorial the Gunther character has been portrayed by Evans as socially inept, nerdy, anti-macho, overly sensitive and book smart. The embodiment of all the characteristics antithetical to the “U.S. Standard Male Image". Most of the main, recurring characters are portrayed in a positive light unless the serve some villainous (Ann) or anti-hero purpose (like Les). Even Dirk was rehabbed (For Pete’s sake!).
But the Gunther character has been consistently maltreated by the Evanses. Portrayed in the poorest of lights. Held up to derision. Bullied. On, and on, and on. Whenever an inkling of male pattern assertiveness is portrayed it is quickly snuffed by some inane comment or behavior. Like today’s strip.
One must wonder whether Mr. Evans has some visceral dislike of “cerebral” personalities or whether he sees himself in the character too much.
Oh come on people this is rated G as in gee-whiz it’s not going to get nuts. This is what we call the funnies Ha Ha. Don’t blow a 50 amp fuse take it easy have fun! As much as you would like this be this isn’t real.
Poor Gunther! He’s so angry with Les he’s failing to see how much Tiffany likes him. He’s very close to blowing it. I hope he doesn’t. He just needs to be honest about his feelings. But he can’t for fear of being rejected. Gunther has never had a father figure in his life so he really doesn’t know how to act around women. I don’t think he lacks desire. He’s just uncomfortable with it.
Well, she’s to blame too, because she created this mess. I would be pissed if I knew a girl I invited for dinner had plans with another guy later on. But these things don’t happen.
Why they want “fat Tiffany”, though? She was hot before, but now…
Key: Tiffany said “Oh, for pete’s sake, GUNTHER,” not “Oh, for pete’s sake,” LES or even just “for pete’s sake.” She means, “Gunther, would you grow up and also stop interfering with my business meeting with Knox, even though I haven’t told you?”
Uh, Gunther? Les said he was dessert, as in something to be desired. He was predicting that Tiffany would pounce on him,NOT that he would pounce on Tiffany. He was setting up his own disappointment, not Tiffany’s assault. You’re doing both Tiffany and Les a disservice by implying that Les intended to pounce on her.
@Sharon: Not just especially now. Always. Unfortunately, reality is otherwise. Instead of either ‘especially now’ or always, it would seem internationally that the reality is ‘never’…
Maybe Tiff should look into Gunther’s eyes and say, "Have you ever thought that I might like to be “pounced?” Something Gunther needs to ponder. Rosa definitely wanted more action from Gunther.
Um, Mordock999, you DO realize that Luann is a COMIC STRIP, don’t you? These characters, although somewhat interesting, and not real and live only in the inventive mind of Greg Evans, their creator and “god.” He, and only he will figure out what’s to become of the people in his world, and he doesn’t need your help. Although I kind of admire your passion, my advice to you is to sit back, fasten your seat belt, and enjoy the ride. Don’t worry, most of the issues of the characters in this comic strip will be eventually resolved! You, my friend, remind me of people who can’t miss their favorite soap opera. Perhaps you need to get a real life because you’re too wrapped up in this thing that is not real.
Gunther, she just told you that she’s enjoying you company, and is sorry it can’t go longer. Take it. It’s completely unrealistic for her to cancel with the guy who’s been waiting in the next room for two hours.

Gunny, what you need here is diplomacy, not reckless truthfulness. Do not tattle. Make the date. Win on your own terms!
Or lose, as usual….
