My grandma used to bring us huge beefsteak tomatoes she grew in her garden. I loved making bacon and tomato sandwiches with them (never cared much for lettuce).
The melody is Beethoven’s Ode to Joy (9th symphony, last movement), starting on the note B—-for the clef indicates that G is in the third space from the bottom: unusual, yes. But readable!
I despise tomatoes, but grew some one year for my mom and nephew (he was 2 at the time). Asked my nephew to take the first two tomatoes that ripened in to his grandma…. neither one of them made it to the house. Got a picture of him, half eaten tomato in each hand and a look of pure joy on his face. Mom used to take a salt shaker with her when she’d pick tomatoes… she always said that there was nothing better than a tomato still warm from the sun with plenty of salt.
The last time I had some fresh from the garden tomatoes, just picked by myself I went & bought some thick sliced bacon & a head of lettuce. Just great! I’ve never tried a tomato sandwich…next time!
Duke’s is number one. They don’t add sugar like the others. Hellman’s / Best Food’s is ok in a pinch. Tomato needs to be firm tart and red, not mealy, soft and sorta red maybe pinkish.
My wife insisted on buying some vintage tomato plants this year. One plant has two tomatoes on it and nether of the others have any. The Early Girl and Sweet 100 on the other hand are covered.
OMG I so understand this comic! There is nothing in the world like a home grown ‘mater sandwich. I’ve tried to grow my own tomatoes, without a lot of success—for some reason I do ok with tommytoes (cherry tomatoes for the uninitiated) but not with the big ones. Fortunately, in my area there are plenty of farmers’ markets and roadside stands and very soon the ‘maters will start coming in. All you need for the perfect sandwich is a loaf of good fresh “light bread”, your mayo of choice (I lean toward Kraft but Hellman’s and Duke’s are good too), a salt shaker (no pepper for me), and an ice cold Coca Cola (preferably in a glass bottle) to wash it down. If you’ve never had home grown tomatoes, please try to find some—no pale, flavorless supermarket tomato can come close to that perfection. The best sub, by no means perfect, are the hydroponic ones from Canada. Thank you, Jimmy, for this comic, and God bless Guy Clark for writing “Home Grown Tomatoes”!
Simple pleasures. Interesting that he is whistling Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, which is known for its famously "simple melody, as he makes his tomato sandwich. I guess Copland’s “Simple Gifts” from “Appalacian Spring” would have been a bit too long for the panel.
Dang. I think this strip is for us old folks to take that daily walk down memory lane. I’m 62 and know I’m not the youngest one to read this, but I also know that by far I’m not the oldest. Thank you Mr. Johnson. (see the respect for my elders there)
Surely he can do better than white bread. Whole wheat / multi grain toast would be much better. Or for something different try it on a baguette with a bit of fresh mozzarella
I thought I was the only weirdo that ate a BLT without the BL. Just toasted whole wheat bread with a slathering of Miracle Whip and several thin slices of tomato!
I am from North Carolina and moved to Ohio in 1986. We could not find Duke`s Mayonnaise in the grocery stores until 2016. Now I can have me a tomato sandwich with the best mayo…

I would have correlated the salt and pepper more to the tomato and the mayonnaise to the bread as a constructive imagery.
Basic tomato sandwich for me would be hold the salt and put a few dashes of olive oil over the pepper on the tomato.
Of course, I usually like sandwiches more complicated than that.
