Oh no… Goldie, I don’t know what to tell you. You’ve had your world collapse on you so many times over the past few months…
Poor little fugitive, indeed. Maybe it’s better that she overheard it rather than someone telling her straight-out? But at least now she’s asking “What happened?” rather than chasing her own conspiracy theories.
Oh, Goldie! I can see that your little heart is being shattered. My heart is breaking for you. You are such a good kitty girl and I’m sorry you started out with people who didn’t deserve your loyalty. You may not realize it yet, but you have just met two of the best people any cat would ever hope to meet.
I don’t know how Georgia manages to show much emotion on the faces of Goldie, Tommy and Beatrix.
Our little black panther kitty was left behind when his first people moved but they were good enough to leave him with our vet where my husband fell in love with him. So he got the happy ending that Goldie deserves too. Some happy endings just take longer than others.
Right now the vet has a poster up for a group of female dogs being retired by a local breeder. Hoping they find good homes too. Problem is, these dogs have lived their 5 or 6 years in kennels and will need to be house and obedience trained.
I am not enjoying this part of the story, which is not intended as slight at all against Georgia and her wonderful characters, story telling or art. I want to fix everything for Goldie and make it all better, which is just projection on my part to fix everything in my life (unemployed-need job) and make it all better.
I have sent out numerous resume’s on Indeed, and done everything I should be doing. Applied for unemployment, but in Missouri it takes 3-6 weeks. I am checking other places (i.e. Craigslist) but no nibbles. Either I don’t have exactly the right training or my Masters & Bachelors Degree in Business and experience make people think I am overqualified for the position. Furthermore, they can see the dates of my Degrees and figure out my age…strike three! He’s outta here!
My sleep has been effected. I dream about my old job or my dreams are troubled in general. I keep busy during the day and I am exercising. My Dad has Doctor’s appointments so I take him and he likes that I am around for problems. It is just a general feeling of uselessness.
You know what? I have never had a job that I said is perfect for me. At 56 years old, I have no idea what would have been a perfect career for me. I am applying for similar jobs to what I had, as a Purchasing Agent, but that job is not fun. Its boring. I have had positions that have been more fun than others, but no single one has been the end all, be all, of jobs.
I’ve come to suspect that Maverick was abandoned before he came to live with us. He reportedly arrived at the shelter around just the right age where he wouldn’t have been a cute little kitten anymore. As well, about two months after we got him, the Woman had to have emergency surgery that put her in the hospital for three weeks, and I stayed with her at the hospital for most of that time. When she came home … well, there are two stories about when she came home, but here’s one of them … he would visibly panic if he saw her moving toward the door. It took several months before he stopped doing that, and that was about when he started sleeping at the foot of our bed.
For certain, I know Ember’s mother was abandoned, probably when she came up in the family way. Ember and her three siblings were newborn and feral when they were found. Mom ended up being TNRed; they couldn’t socialize her.
Goldie, I just want you to know that so many people are here for you, and that we’ll get through this together. We’ll be with you when you piece it together. Don’t you worry about a thing, Goldie.
I realize I’ve been inactive lately. It’s because I’ve been very busy on Scratch, and haven’t had time.
I am offended by Goldie being called a fugitive. She didn’t escape; they evicted her. Yes she was in hiding but only because she was forced to live on her own. aargh.
Bea looks like she’s ready to cry. hope this isn’t bringing back bad memories for her. I think it’s so odd that so many of us here have bought inferior screens, must be a coincidence, nothing to do with Georgia’s writing, I’m sure.
10 years ago we adopted one year old Shellie from a Petco cage in Oro Valley AZ. Nobody wanted her when she was at a no kill rescue sneezing & showing signs of being very sick. But nursed back to health & on display. Goldie sneezing touched my concern thinking of Shellie’s situation. Link is a short video of Shellie next to my drawing table. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0liWES6qgxjUmt3SHQxaEkwQWc/view?usp=sharing
When I was a kid we moved three blocks away – from a rental house to one we purchased. We kept our two cats inside for a while to get them used to the new location, as you do. When we started to let them out again, one was fine with it. The other ran straight back to the old house. My brother and I spent the next year constantly going back to the old house and catnapping her home again, to no avail. She eventually wound up being semi-adopted by one of the neighbors, but only as an outside cat. We never understood why she was more invested in the old neighborhood than her old family, but that’s just how it was for her.
Our newest little guy (2 years, but still the newest) was left in somebody’s fenced backyard at night. I guess that was the good news — somebody cared enough to make sure he was safe. Sad thing is, he’s a complete cuddler and physical contact with his humans is really important to him so that must have been one long night for him. When he has to go out after dark he won’t go away from the back door unless one of us is visible outside, and at that he doesn’t take his eyes off us until he can get back to the door. So, like, I knew her people had moved. Why am I still teary?
People that know about the colony that I help at will dump their cat(s), thinking that they’ll be accepted by the other cats. They aren’t, they have to fight their way in. As soon as I see something that the primary didn’t see, she will catch the cat, bring it in, and if it’s obvious that they’ve been socialized, they go into foster care and are spayed/neutered.
My heart has been breaking for Goldie throughout this story-line, and I’m holding on to my temper that demands that her People be so abruptly abandoned and without resources – in the middle of the Sahara, say. Sorry, my Scorpio nature just sometimes want revenge.

And again my heart breaks! The only thing making it better is knowing that Goldie will get a loving new family that won’t abandon her.

Slowly, Goldie’s denial is breaking down. The pieces are coming together. If she can’t blame the racoons, then…
I wish Tommy’s Woman would be more forthcoming.

And it sounds as if other people in town were concerned about Goldie if they were calling Tommy’s Woman about her.

And by the way – who’s got Lupin’s recorder now? Did Beatrix leave it at the Bookstore?

Poor wandering one,
Thou art much more than a stray!
No need to roam,
You’ve found your new home
Poor wandering one!
…….
Poor wandering one
You have such love from the Orb,
No need to fear,
Come stay right here!
Take any heart, take ours!
…….
Take any heart, do not fear,
Tommy and Beatrix are right here,
Take heart, a new day will shine,
Take any heart, it’s thine!
