Some other things not to say: “It’s not really a party…” “I need parental consent to do X, so whaddya say?” “It’s a heart that says ‘MOM’, why are you freaking out?” “Y’know, in France, kids drink every day.” “But you let me pierce my EARS!” “I can’t wait till I’M an adult.”
I guess since Peanuts ended Luann decided to ensure Pig Pen’s legacy lived on. Like, I understand clothes and paperwork being scattered around, but she’s got food left forgotten on her bed and an open can of paint just sitting there waiting to get knocked over (and it wouldn’t even be the first time she spilled a whole can of paint in the last few years.) Messiness I can forgive, but at this point she’s just living in filth. Evans really needs to give up this particular punchline, because it’s getting disgusting and reflecting pretty badly on the character (and her parents for letting it continue).
I don’t blame the parents. I don’t blame Luann. It’s the way she’s being depicted, and it only happens on weekends. I can’t think of any 20 year old who would leave a can of paint in such a precarious position. By the time you’re 20, you don’t leave food all over your bedroom. This is age inappropriate, even for an older teenager. People do grow up and stop this silliness, and it’s about time Luann is allowed to grow up.
In case you haven’t noticed, the cartoonists are putting in several objects associated with people helping make things go during the pandemic. Such as:
When I think of the circumstances in Tiffany’s life and the challenges she is having to overcome, shouldn’t the supposed heroine of this comic strip be facing a few challenges in her own life? Having a filthy room is more in keeping with a 13 year old, and being “bored” is a trait of 8 year olds. I can’t understand why she is being held back from normal development. It’s not natural.
Wait, is that a copy of “The Art of Mort Drucker”? Luann is a person of culture ♡ And it’s a beautiful tribute from Greg to the great cartoonist. Puddles that smile under the mask is so cute♡, plus there is the poster that says “Stay strong”. It’s nice to see G&K giving readers messages of hope in these pandemic days ♡. And I will never be tired of saying how much I love Luann’s messy room ♡.
Luann is no longer a 13 year old. When she is not in school, she should have a part time job. Why not a hobby? A sport? And WHY isn’t she dating? Doesn’t have to have a steady boyfriend, ….lots of comic fodder for dating… How about an arc with her signing up for Match.com? This Sunday strip harkens back to a time when she was about 13. Too young to date, too young to work. So without Bernice and without school, yeah…lots of boredom.
Many “folks” interpret this as Luann being a “slob.”
Posh.
I look at it as Luann being in her “Safe Place,” free from the craziness going on in the outside World. So her stuff’s not in order. Big friggin’ Deal. She’s got everything she needs right there, including her beloved Puddles. And despite the look on Nancy’s face, Luann is surrounded by loving parents. Truly a rarity in this Strip these days.
Now compare that, to Tiffany’s LOVELESS situation. Poor little formerly rich girl living in a big house, that she’s FORCED to clean by her dad’s evil heartless grifter parasite, “girlfriend.” Three guesses as to which young lady is better off. And the first two guesses don’t count.
But, If you’re really worried about Luann cleaning up that room, then just give Lu a gentleman caller, coming over for a visit. One she has REAL feelings for and wants some privacy with. That room would be “spic and span” in short order.
So, give the “Sunday Luann” a break. She’s doing better than most characters in the VAST Luanniverse, and Sundays gives her a chance to “Star” in Her own Strip for a change.
That said, you will excuse M. I have to get drop cloths and vomit bags ready and brace myself for what I’m afraid is coming this week.
Have a very pleasant Sunday, My fellow Luannatics. ;)
This theme of the messy room seems to come back over and over and over – its boring. How old is this girl now – three? Is she never going to mature at all? Right now she is my least favorite character on this strip.
And again the comments will fry her, even though this is a standalone and not intended to have anything to do with the current timeline. BTW, My eldest has ADD, and even now at 34 he tells me he has to struggle to keep his personal space in order. He keeps getting distracted by the other things that he CAN hyper-focus on.
I understand that Sunday strips are unrelated to ongoing arcs in deference to Sunday-only readers. I don’t understand why they should be uninteresting to everyone.
I took a look at my printed Sunday funnies section, and I’ve seen the different ways that the objects (especially the shopping cart) are depicted.
Positive: Doll shopping cart (Family Circus). Food delivery truck outside with a shopping cart logo (Rhymes with Orange). Dream sequence involving riding a shopping cart chasing a runaway hamburger (Curtis).
Negative: Shopping carts stolen from supermarkets by main teen characters and stowed in the family home (Luann, Zits)
PASTE FROM THE ABOUT PAGE OF THIS WEBSITE: "LUANN is about the trials of becoming a young adult: the hilarity and drama, triumphs and flops, friendships and rivalries. Rich in character and intriguing “what’ll happen next?!” stories, LUANN is a compelling saga of life’s most volatile stage. Greg Evans was voted Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 2003 by the National Cartoonists Society."I try to be kind about the trolls who bemoan how boring this strip is, or why isn’t Luann in it, or why is she IN it? Or she is a useless juvenile, and the dirty room trope is overused, and lets not even talk about her love life. Jeez, per them the girl can’t catch a break. I pasted the above to remind what the strip is about, and as to today’s strip the biggest thing is the obvious recognition of Covid-19, with Puddles having the mask on (hilarity ensues), but Lu is stuck at home sheltering in place, like all or most of us. This can be done on Sunday’s because Greg doesn’t have to follow the arc development he does during the week. I think we will go back to Tiffany, the drama queen so far, with no reference to current events, but that is the point—story, drawn in a very successful comic.
The next time cartoonists agree to hide symbols in their Sunday ‘toons as a salute to essential workers, or for any other reason, I hope the Evansi decide to try a completely new scene for the hiding place. If I might offer a small suggestion: try a food court setup at a ComicCon. A group of very sophisticated ’fans’ have gathered with their $80 ‘coffees’ to complain about one of the ‘toons. They are all wearing name badges. One badge identifies the wearer as “BeeJayBoat”; one identifies its wearer as “TheMaster”; one is “LivetoBeef”, one is “NotBornYet” and so one. They each bemoan the boring repetition of a ’toon about a messy room, while they munch on energy bars and dribble costly coffee on the table top. Several stab their energy bars with forks; one is sitting on a steering wheel, and one munches an apple. Nearby is a shopping cart labeled ’thank you for depositing trash here’. When the group is done with their snack and beef session, they leave all the wrappers and dripping cups on the table…
I have followed this comic for quite a while but never wrote a comment until now. As an essential worker, in the ER (I actually read this in between patients) and in teaching, I would like to thank you and all of the cartoonists who took part in the National Cartoonists Society challenge to use the symbols in their comics today (well, yesterday, since I’m writing this on Monday).
