Gatta confess, I’m with the Wizard on this one. Tonight we were working in the garage with the lights on and all of a sudden I realized a tarantula had come in to see what was going on. They actually exhibit intelligence. He, I do think it was a young male, was about 2 feet away, just sitting there and watching. I got two paint stirring sticks, held them in a ‘V’, and moved the ‘V’ slowly towards the tarantula guiding him outside. Smaller spiders get captured with a plastic cup and piece of thin cardboard and carried outside.
In magical circles… the belief is if you talk to the spider and tell it you want it to be outside… then aid it to be there (cup/jar method)… it will grant you a wish. My problem is – the only wish I have is for it to eat more mosquitoes! ;)
Spiders are our friends, they eat all the nasty blood-sucking insects as well as flies. Many years ago my ex and I used to go camping in our caravan with our young daughters. One year we were visiting the Kruger National Park which is in our home country, South Africa. The camp we were in was far up the reserve in elephant country and even in the winter it was hot. We settled down for our first night in our rondavel [round hut]. Looking up at the ceiling I noticed a huge black spider sitting up there directly above my baby’s cot. I was terrified that the spider would drop down into the cot. However, the spider just moved around the ceiling the entire night and we had a peaceful sleep. The next day my husband was chatting to the young couple in the hut next to us and they were complaining of being bitten by thousands of nasty insects. The reason why we had no insects was because of the spider. All the hut roofs were thatch. Because we were in a nature reserve visitors were not allowed to interfere with the wildlife in any way.
I glanced up from my reading one day and saw a snake on the floor across the room from me. Small snake so I gave it the bowl/piece of cardboard treatment and turned it loose. Outside.
Wait a darn toon minute where’s the Kaboom? There was supposed to be an Earth-Shattering Kaboom! Yesterdays cartoon did not end, with the appropriate Kaboom! You can’t leave it hanging like that.
My daughter-in-law made sure my son carefully moved a spider outside the house, watched to make sure it was safe for several days afterward.
If you have to kill, kill. If you don’t have to kill, don’t.
(Except for skeeters, horseflies and dogflies, fire ants, roaches, maybe a few other things I can’t think of right this second; those should be killed immediately.)
