This is the point of the two weeks of gardening? Tiffany is going to blow her father’s money opening a T-Shirt shop selling shirts with new agey mottoes that were cool 30 years ago? Tiffany is going to be so burned the first time some GenZ wanders into her shop and laughs all the Kumbiya messages. Tiff would have been better off with her “Tiff as Nails” and just rent a booth in a beauty parlor near the campus….
Please, a week of Monstro swimming! I’m desperate here.
It’s a good idea for sure on Tiff’s part. But I’m getting the feeling that Dez isn’t exactly on her wavelength. We’ll see how it all shakes out, though…
So the same dress that barely covers Tiffany’s rear end today was knee-length on 9/25. It’s always funny watching Karen’s extreme Puritan mindset conflict with Greg’s constant desire to sexualize these teenagers.
Tiff, read the room. You are pitching a business idea to the wrong woman. Dez isn’t growing a garden to make money, she LOVES the outdoors, LOVES working outside and enjoys the fruits of her hard work. You’re confusing Dez with Ann Awful.
M’neighbour travels to the other side of the inlet for veg for her pickles. (Beets, carrots, etc.) I believe her about the taste. They have good loamy soil over there compared to pulverized rock with some organic matter over here. (Good terroir for wine, though.)
Tiff starting a “business?” Oh BOY. Here We go again. As someone else mentioned, Tiffany once started “Tiff as Nails,” but THAT was quickly shot down in flames by the (then) campus bureaucracy in the form of Bernice.
So what kind of “business” does Tiff have in mind?
T-shirts? She’ll need a space for work/storage and equipment and employees who expect to be paid. Not to mention someone to come up with snappy sayings to put on the shirts. And then, there’s advertising and promotion which costs money. UNLESS, Tiffany teams with Bets and “advertises” her t-shirts during one of Bets and Gun’s podcasts. She might sell a few hundred to the cosplay crowd depending on what’s on the shirt. But hardly enough to buy a Bentley.
Growing produce and selling at grocery stores? Need big farms, expensive equipment and lots of well paid employees. Unless Tiffany goes the cheap immigrant labor route to do the dirty work.
Cooking and selling meals featuring local garden grown vegetables? Might work, if the food is featured, prepared and sold at the Fuse. If it’s cooked and sold from the Farrell mansion, the local health department will be all over Tiff like a cheap sundress.
If Tiff is lucky, she’ll get “business major” Bets involved in whatever scheme she’s hatching. And maybe between Bets and Dez, they can talk Tiffany out it. ;)
My Dad grew tomatoes, red potatoes, squash, corn, peas, bell peppers, snap beans and jalapeños in his garden every year. Whenever we went to visit we would come home with baskets of fresh produce in the spring and summer and canned goods my Mom put up in the winter. Grocery store produce, no matter how good, could compare in taste and appearance.
If Tiff learned anything from her father it is to think like a business owner. Doing nails, t-shirts, even selling unused items on Not eBay. Her problem is follow-thru. But I think her journey to bonafide businesswoman will continue.
So confusing. Does Dez own a large parcel of ground where this garden is located? How is Tiffany going to conduct a business with produce from a little community garden? They could do a veggie stand maybe, but the growing season is over. Unless of course in their world there are no seasons. Maybe they live on the equator.
So, with Tiffany as manager, Dez as gardener and TJ as cook, they can offer very exclusive (and delicious) meals at Tiffany’s house. Dunno… when you try to make money using something born thanks to someone’s love, this usually ends with a progressive impoverishment of quality. Honestly… I like the idea of Tiffany starting her own garden more.
Business of social media. Tiktok and Youtube videos on how to plant/raise/harvest/cook/eat a garden. Dez does the garden….Tj the cooking….Tiff the talking/interviewing. Sell t-shirts on the side.
Some things people love shouldn’t be a business. Like the episode of ‘Parks and Recreation’ where Ron Swanson refused to have his artisanal chairs be mass-marketed.
Tiffany and Dez are going to start a farm to table business and Tiffany will love fresh veggies so much she will naturally get healthier and more svelte simply because she’s doing something she loves and is focused on good things. This could be a good move for her!
Ah! There it is! A light bulb just went on for Tiffany, the business woman! Dez wants to donate the crops and Tiff wants to make money. So where does TJ fit into this scenario? Are we exchanging the college campuses for Green Acres? ;-)
I find myself commenting following the trends in the blog here, particularly when there is no real artistic topic I am invested in. That is the case here, although I like Dez, and the overall story of Tiffany is the most compelling one to me in Luannverse. I think part of the angst I perceive is based on the fact that the strip has evolved in time and space in comic strip terms so that the main characters now are in the young adult phase of life. A lot of basic personality themes are still fundamental, for example Luann is still the nutty but forever romantic heart of the strip. She is developing, as are the other main characters. The most exciting character is Gunther with his hot, smart girlfriend, and I think she is for real and permeant, at least I hope so. I, for one, am looking at Luannverse in the frame of mind of what one could expect in the early to mid twenties. And I think Tiffany is more cute being just a bit more zaftig personally. Overall a very attractive portraiture.
My town used to have a community garden. You paid a fee for a nice size plot. At the far end was a large area for the “food pantry” – where a group of people planted and took care of it. The town provided water and straw. Two weeks in the month of Sept. – I had to go out of town and told ‘food pantry’ to take anything they wanted. Plot was empty when I got back…was very satisfying.
The problem is Tif, is that Love is very difficult to scale up. Somewhere around a dozen or so people Love seems to fade away and spreadsheets take over. Very little love in any spreadsheet I’ve ever seen (and that is a straight line if I’ve ever seen one.)
There was a nice plot on the side of our house and it faced a side street so my mom decided to use it as a garden, she was a country girl. It worked until some neighborhood kids trashed it all. Mom never tried again.
Nothing tastes as good as fruits and veggies fully ripened and fresh out of the garden. Sweet corn eaten less than an hour after it is picked is unbelievably good.
So now Tiffany is going to try and commercialize Dez’s garden, ruining Dez’s enjoyment of it. Dez will get stressed out and eventually ask Tiffany to stop.
Bless you, Tiffster Farrell, her father’s daughter and budding capitalist! Dez deserves thanks and encouragement, and though your idea is a bit awkward, I’m sure it is well-intended!

Takes more than “love” to produce a really healthy garden with meaty and juicy veggies and fruits. MUCH involved.

Unlike tomatoes and raspberries, that carrot just came up out of the ground. Fancy fertilizer and all. Where’d she scrub it down?
