What is this outfit Bernice is wearing? Did she forget she lives in California?

Gosh Bernice is an A hole.

She can tell Luann is up to something.

It does seem like Bernice has a guilty conscience about something.

Watch out. Luann, Bernice might get the bug spray out and let you have it…

If Luann were at all sensative, she would have heard enough to know she should back off and not broach the subject of Bernice’s brother. However, we all know that going to happen as surely as night follows day. Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

So she’s going with the sneaky approach instead of the honest one. Looks like Gunther’s advice about simply being upfront went in one ear and out the other. Luann’s empty head sure does cause a lot of avoidable drama.

True dat, Prescott. If Luann has been anything this last decade, it is a butt-in-ski.

Luann should just mention that she saw her brother today, if that gets no reaction let it drop. Family has to work out their issues themselves.

Oh, Bernice is cranky. Yep, she is weighed down with issues and is annoyed with the perky Luann. That crotchet cap looks like it serves as her security blanket. Like hiding from the world. A tip from Nil?

Five questions? Red Flag! Luann is normally a narcissistic person!

Okay. In the interest of being ‘nicer’ here, I’m going to look at this objectively. Kinda.

1) Bern used to conduct those “Study Ball” things at the campus. So maybe she’s been busy conducting one of those each and every time there just happens to be a dinner at the Halpers.

2) Just because Bernice lives at Casa DeGroot, it doesn’t give Luann the “right” to interrogate Bern every time she returns from GAW know where.

3) Maybe Bernice is being a good citizen and has been busy driving non-driving people to the polls for early voting. (Like the rest of “Us” SHOULD be doing)

There. See? No big mystery. Because if one were the “not nice,” suspicious type, one would wonder:

A) How come Bernice, the smartest student on campus, who so far has been able to “tune Luann out” while listening to Muzak and studying in her rent-free bedroom, suddenly need to go some place else to “study?”

B) What (Or maybe “who”) could possibly tear Bern away from her beloved pet, Monstro?

C) Why is Bern suddenly giving monosyllabic responses to Lu’s questions, when in the past Ms Bernice has been all yakkety-snarky?

Gee. A “not so Nice person” would almost think Ms Halper is (GASP) hiding something.

Luann’s vest also works as a fun summer tank top. Gunther must have made it for her.

Bernice knows that Luann up to no good.

Bern is definitely “out of sorts”, while Luann is on the “up side”. Will there be a reversal in several weeks?

1. She reminds me of Pyro here. 2. She wouldn’t want to tell Luanne if she were seeing Jack. (Is the mention of Monstro foreshadowing?)3. Is wherever where she’s been when she hasn’t been at family dinner with Ben?

Bernice is much harsher towards her friend than the cold weather is.

Well we are developing an actual plot now.

This weeks strip looks promising.

Well, and I start with well because I can’t resist scrolling through some of the comments already in, and man is there predictively judgmental heavy breathing going on. All’s that is happening so far is that Luann is trying to gauge her somewhat sarcastically inclined friend’s (people do have jackets in the desert I believe by the way) mood, to soften somewhat the effect of what she is about to bring up with Bern, showing a very mature, also by the way, empathy with, understanding of, and concern for her friend, and the possible consequences on their relationship. It’s played for humor, in this case kind of situational, but too many seem to forget that humor is one of the three pegs that support this strip’s stool: art work, complicated stories with numerous arcs and characters, and HUMOR.

she’s dressed for a “covert” operation. and her actions say, she didn’t like the outcome.

Something has to be up with Bernice, she’s in a foul mood.

Back off, Luann. Bernice is obviously angry and stressed out.

Bern being her usual amiable self. So what’s new?

Hmm. Bernie wearing a LOT of covering clothes. Her attitude seems guilty/defensive. I have to wonder, if she may have been spending time with Dez, and/or Jack.Are we going to see a different side, of Ms. Halper? Toon in tomorrow; Same Luann Time,Same Luann Channel…

When everything is said and done Bernice is going to tell Luann to keep her nose out of her business, that she doesn’t and won’t understand etc etc etc

Luann is unable of being subtle, but she’s so adorable when she tries to be ♡♡♡. I hope Bernice’s mysterious behavior is connected to the doctor Piro was talking to on the phone the last time they met. It’s a mystery that has been waiting for an explanation for too long!

Well, that may not be the best approach for an honest conversation. Right away Bernice is on the defensive. Like the weather today, overcast and dreary with a threat of something worse to come. ;-/

Bernice knows that Luann is trying to hide something from her and we know what it is.

I know, she’s been following Ben incognito because she has reason to believe he’s up to something. That means she saw him and Luann having their cozy chat.

I still think this is some type of metaphor for suffering through isolation.

Bernice has been hangin’ with Jack on the sly at the beach. She then covers her steps by covering herself with clothes so that Luann isn’t the slightest bit suspicious.

A lot of commenters are focussing on Bernie here and theorize she is hiding something and being a Not-Nice Person.

Maybe so. But Luann is stepping over the line, too, in her inquisitorial patter. It’s clear she has an angle. She wants something….

Wow Bern and Ben are both moochers! Not only do they squat on other people’s property they have other people handle their relationship issues.

Everyone seems to be all atwitter this morning about secret or covert activity by Bernice. She could merely be coming in from the library.

And Luann’s approach to “the brother question” isn’t all that different behavior to what she anticipates to be a touchy subject. And Bernice’s reaction to Luann acting all tippy-toed seems to be compatible with someone that suspects that there is a covert reason for such behavior.

Relax folks. More will be revealed tomorrow.

Agree. also Bern is dressed in her normal nerdy campus attire that we have seen on her before. She is likely just coming home late from studying in the library after class. She looks like a typical college student wearing jeans and the standard woolly watchcap.

Bernice will be a terrible counselor. Luann is trying to talk to her about something and Bernice stifles any conversation. Luann could be upset about something and Bernice would not bother to talk to her. A good counselor would gradually get the person to open up.

Don’t get distracted by Luann’s presence … this arc isn’t about her, it’s about Bernice. Focus.

So now we’ll see the next five days of the Evanses beating around the bush, then they’ll suspend the arc by doing what they always do…. pull the rug out from under you while the door slams on your nose…

Okay…. so I’m assuming that Ben has departed Castle DeGroot instead of hanging around to get some direct answers from his stand-offish, suspicious, and estranged(?) sister…. like he has anything else to do… maybe he’s out looking for a job, but I doubt it.

Luann should have just said that Ben came by looking for her, and forget about getting involved. Bern just isn’t likable to me. I don’t much care what happens to her.
