You’re letting another golden opportunity slip thru your fingers!
Grab your phone, set it to ‘record,’ press it against wall and record the HECK outta this! Record every single ‘dream’ Bernice has.
So when the next time YOU are hurting, and Bernice responds with a Snarky Remark?PLAYBACK TIME! And if you’re very lucky, Bernice will scream out Jack’s name before she wakes up.
The “wall-talk” is quickly becoming quite intriguing to our now-wakened ingénue. What dark secrets of the psyche may be revealed “across the pond,” as it were. And how will they affect the relationship in this newly minted sisterhood!?!?
This is quite the cerebral dream sequence! Recruiting Monstro as an advocate is clever ploy. After all Jacques(Jack) selected him from all the other fishies at the store. Bernice is not about to surrender the field to this usurper. You GO, Girlfish!
I agree with the idea that what is being drawn is a lucid dream scenario, Bernice is aware, on some level she is in a dream, one in which she can manipulate characters or events in the dream to do what the dreamer wants. It’s literal in her head hence the bloop blop sounds, and she hears the actual voice in her head of Luann, causing her to ask Monstro to talk mer-Jack to be with her and not Luann. In the hilarity there is deeper meaning. Could be complex.
If you are a first time reader today and just happened to see this comic for the first time, don’t go away with that strange puzzled look on your face. Go back a few weeks in the archives. It was actually better then!
Bernice is always so proper and precise. Even in her dream she had to be the Grammar Nazi and it caused her to lose Jack’s interest. I think this dream is her sub-conscious telling her to stop being so darn nit-picky about everything or she will end up pushing everyone away.
Have to love it when the mind relaxes and then processes a few things, almost like she took a pill and is now in Wonderland (blue or red, don’t you want to know)… Not the confrontation over Jack I was imagining between Luann and Bernice but I suspect this is what we get because Bernice is processing all of that in her sleep and it’s looking like Jack will be another “dream guy” for Bernice. Surprised by the method, not the result. Oh well. Wonder if Bernice will sample a mushroom or maybe a little hookah with a caterpillar?
Luann’s “Uh Oh…” face in the last panel is priceless ♡! I love how Monstro in Bernice’s dream looks like a Disney character. Poor Bernice desperately wants to have Jack’s attention all to herself♡. Will Luann go to wake Bernice or will she keep hearing her talking in her sleep? After all, lstening to Bernice freely say her most hidden desires and fears is an opportunity you don’t get normally.
Monstro to the rescue; i love the relationship between Bern and Monstro ; it took me a bit to realize that the ‘burgle golp bloob’ is Monstro talking ….to Jack
After all of the years of Bernice being portrayed as a one dimensional stick in the mud I’m glad we are getting a chance to see beyond that . I’m sure like all arcs eventually we will get to some sort of payoff but until then I have no problem with the focus on Bernice .
So the Ben plotline was abandoned for this? Its like the strip looks at all their available storytelling choices and decides to go with the dullest option.
That Nancy has a romance novel shouldn’t come as a surprise unless the surprise is that she has a book at all. That the book is about mermaids is — odd. That seems a subject usually confined to children. Adult romances tend to be about adults. Or rather an adult woman and man, wermen, dinosaur, vampires, etc. Bernice having a lucid dream about the book she’s reading is pretty normal, too. The dream is pretty funny, too, because it’s letting Bernice express emotions that she normally represses, thus making her a normal girl of her age. It;s been a long time since anything really silly has happened in this strip. Of course this whole arc was premised on the idea that Bernice needs to talk with Ben and that seems less and less likely. unless, as seems unlikely, Ben intrudes in her dream to block her from getting to Jacques. That would be an interesting twist but the writer often forgets to circle back to the beginning when ending an arc
I guess I’m one of the minority who is happy about this story? Nancy may have just triggered a huge emotional growth spurt (no pun intended) for Bernice!
I think the problem with the majority of the posters is that we want some actual life changing events instead of boring weekly strips that really go nowhere. I mean really the last “event” that has happened is Toni and Brad getting married. Everything else that’s come after has lasted a week or two and then it’s all over and we move on to another week.
As it stands everyone besides Toni and Brad are the same as they were 5 years ago except some have left the strip for good or the kids have moved from high school to college.

I don’t know… Maybe ‘cause I’m a guy, but this arc leaves me cold. To say it’s shallow and improbable, is heaping praise on it.

That last panel sounds like very peculiar sleep apnea.

I’d say Bernice is slowly sinking, but she’s already underwater.
Perhaps, when something is not going right, the underwater creatures say it is surfacing instead of sinking…

Why the HECK is GnK doing this arc? So far, it’s been silly and pointless.

Monstro sounds like he’s putting on the full court press on Jacques. Can he save the day or will he get deep-sixed!?

Luann might want to go in there now, just to make sure Bernice isn’t choking to death. (Ben who?)

So, a week of Luann listening to strange sounds coming from Bernice’s room?
