I have to chuckle at Elvis in his Big Boy sweater. He doesn’t like being a news item, he prefers dignity in his role as top reporter and commentary in Front of the camera!
When Elvis went to the vet the last time and run into Beatrix (shortly after the postal rescue), Baba Mouse and Tommy (just there as a support cat) wasn’t he given something for his cat anxiety? Would this be tied to his overgrooming? Anyhow, our Siamese looks like one real unhappy cat. My cats never look that angry unless I have them in the carrier and they are in the vet’s office.
Might have to go this route with our B&W white tuxedo boy Burrito—he’s not handling the pandemic changes to the household routine well (Mom’s home ALL the time!).
I actually had to do this with a cat I had years ago (he gave himself a hot spot on his tummy). He walked around in a onesie with a hole cut for his tail and booty that read “Mama’s boy” across the chest.
I tried to do that with our dear departed fur baby many years ago when he needed to leave some stitches alone. We found out his opinion on that when he ditched the sweater in the litter box. After that, he had to wear the cone-of-shame for a week until the stitches healed.
Is that a Siamese thing? I have one that licked her back raw and we put her in a dog shirt while it healed. When we took the shirt off a few days later, she meowed and kept nosing the shirt. Queen Alice has worn shirts since. She owns more than I do.
Albert A. Cat has been overgrooming his belly. We tried Felaway and a calming collar with no real effect. We ended up popping him in a surgical recovery suit. After referring to it as a “onesie” and a “romper”, both of which were beneath his dignity, we settled on “supersuit”, as in “Honey, where is my supersuit?”
There are a number of reasons for a cat to over-groom or seem to over-groom. We had a lovely thickly furred white cat who started to urp hairballs the size of a bratwurst and developed red crusty patches on the bare skin. He was not deliberately overdoing the grooming, the hair was actually falling out. After numerous tests and treating for fleas and anxiety and “hot spots” ( which I decided was vet for “no idea but let’s try….. ) we finally got a diagnosis from the university vets after they did a skin scrape. It was an auto immune disease that was causing his own immune system to attack his skin. He was on prednisolone (a version of prednisone) for over a decade which stopped the skin problems but led him to develop diabetes (apparently a known side effect). Luckily he was a laid back good boy who was fine with the insulin shots. We lost him at age 13 when the immune disease suddenly ramped up and attacked his whole body. He went downhill in a matter of days….now my stupid screen is getting all blurry.
Moral of the story, don’t neglect to see your vet and don’t give up until the problem is diagnosed. If all the cat has to deal with is wearing a onesie, you are blessed.
I had a very pleasant surprise yesterday on the TinyKittens livestream when I was greeted there by our own Pamm Whittaker, who didn’t know there were Orbsters hanging about. BarbBESuper popped up as well (I’d forgotten she is also in both friendly places). For anyone here who might be looking for another time-sink, I’d highly recommend the TinyKittens livestream—just use YouTube search for TinyKittens and it’ll show up. It’s every bit as friendly and gentle as our Orb, and there are real live cats & kittens to watch and squee over.
Elvis must be channeling Nicodemus today. Although Nicodemus has been doing this since about 6 months. We took him to a pet allergist (recommended by our vet). It cost lots of money and they couldn’t figure anything out. They offered prednisone (to alleviate the symptoms of whatever was going on) but mentioned the long term increased risk for diabetes. Having just gone through that with the predecessor my final question was — aside from looking awful – is there a downside?
So – sometimes he looks awful. Sometimes he’s just cat-sculpting. Sometimes all the fur is where it should be. It ebbs and flows (and seems to be seasonal). Sometimes it really kicks in (he probably picks up on our stress as well). When it gets bad, he has to put on “jammies” (baby clothes that I still had knocking around). He’s not amused. I’ve also tried oatmeal “baths” and sponge baths during warmer months.
One vet commented that all the fur chewing flosses his teeth. Admittedly, his teeth ARE in good shape. And he doesn’t seem to ingest it — although there’s a lot of it on the floor.
At the moment he’s bad but if you ask — do you want/need your jammies? He immediately stops the chewing/licking. So — if nothing else, he’s learned a new word.
Hello, everyone! Thank you so much for your kind words this week. I’ve got a pretty good health update today: My energy is still pretty low, but my lungs are feeling better. I have been coughing a lot still, it does seem to be helping. Voice is improving. This has been unexpectedly one of the harder sicknesses I’ve dealt with, aspirating into the lungs really takes it out of you. I’m still in bed resting, inking some strips to junk tv, drinking hot coffee, and planning a shower later with a lot of hot steam.
I’ll bet Elvis looks adorable. One of my Siamese had lymphoma and I had that insert a port so that subcutaneous fluids would be more comfortable for her. Of course that meant she had to wear a little shirt.

I’m surprised the Woman can get a sweater on Elvis—I can’t even get a collar on any of mine and they are nowhere near as “dignified” as Elvis!

IRL, didn’t Georgia put Elvis in a bumblebee costume and it really helped him with his grooming anxiety?
