Luann is 20 years old, and surrounded by 20 year old guys. The guys around her should be overflowing with hormones at that age. (At least they were back in the old days—have guys changed?) Luann should be getting many Valentines and many requests for dates. What is the problem? Is it the writers?
Even worse, Tiff shows up with a huge trash bag she tries to pass off as being full of Valentines cards. Turns out it was full of paper going to the recycle bin, and some guy in the dorm building comes up in front of Luann and Bernice and asks Tiff to dump another bag of recycling paper along with the one she already had. Total snag!
To be fair, bargain cards are probably the closest to being worth their cost. I mean, they’re usually just gonna end up in the trash immediately after being read, right? Better to spend that money on something they can actually use.
As always, Bernice can’t help but say something negative about Luann. Even when she does a good thing to boost her self-esteem, Bernice has to point out that the card is cheesy and cheap… Bernice is lucky that Luann is extremely patient, especially with her.
Instead of wasting 98 cents on some cheap card plus your time, why don’t you just clip and paste the Strips from Feb 8th and 9th 2019 to your mirror and re-read what Gunther said about you before you drove him into Bets’ arms, Luann?
He actually meant what he wrote. Plus reading what he wrote for you makes for a nice daily reminder and confidence builder for ya.
And when you’re done with that, ask Bernice, “Where is Her V-Day card?”
Nil couldn’t find enough road-kill to make her a fur coat, and Jack figured one goldfish gift is a-plenty, therefore his work is done?
Now please excuse Me. I’m about to be told: “That ship has sailed, and it’s burning in the middle of the ocean with a lot of criminally overpriced luxury cars onboard.” ;-)
What I find telling, besides Bernice’s total disrespect and sense of entitlement, is that neither Luann nor Bernice sent Valentines to each other or any other friends. My lady gang always sent “Gal-entine’s” cards to each other when we were young, way before it became a thing. Even now, if they don’t come by mail, they cone by text and gif. Also, the eyes may not be ready to address this, but I think Luann and Bern have outgrown this friendship. The season is over. They cut out Delta fast enough (who might have been good for Luann to stay friends) and yet they let this linger? Not a great model if this is supposed to be a toon for teens.
I like today’s comic. There’s a lot of truth in the idea that you should value YOURSELF if you expect others to value you. And if someone doesn’t value you as you expect it won’t bother you because you have enough self value to choose people who WILL find value in you. I love the way Luann turns the tables on Berniece at the end. Berniece is trying to be snarky and de-value Luann but Luann turns a negative into a positive! Berniece does not understand that the value does not lie in the cost of the card but in the sentiments expressed inside. Yay Luann! Now just carry those truths in your heart and you are on your way, Girl!!!!
The takeaway here is that Bernice, just having seen that Luann has sunk to sending positive messages to herself through fake Valentines, decides to make a crack about the price of the card. This b*{ch wants to be a therapist?!?
So, a couple of things. First, it’s ok to send yourself a valentines card. Second, if Luann felt embarrassed about it, she probably shouldn’t have it out in the open. Third, it’s not at all surprising that Bernice would make fun of the card Luann picked because Bernice is a bad friend. Fourth, money is generally a concern for college kids, so if Luann really needed that confidence boost, a cheap card is better than one with popups, music, and glitter. Fifth, if she had gone with something more elaborate, Bernice probably would’ve called her narcissistic.
Bernice being Bernice—a b. Should not be a therapist. If you want to treat yourself to a pizza on your birthday, she’ll mock you for not choosing lobster.

There is no reason why Luann shouldn’t have several guys fighting over her. She doesn’t need to send herself a card.

With what we saw in that flashback, I’m starting to think, the only cards Luann gets, are ones she makes herself! Kinda sad.
