It is impossible to tell if it works or not. You might never change the mind of the person you are debating, but you might change the minds of 3rd parties that are reading the debate. If the 3rd parties don’t comment, you don’t know if your comment changed anyone’s mind.
The problem isn’t social media. The problem is always the ignorant, brain-washed people who are afraid of everything but think they know better than everyone else.
Perhaps this is true, but it doesn’t mean we should do it anyway. Primal scream therapy is quieter on social media and it’s easy to find a shouting buddy or two (and also less violent than the alternative).
Gossip, misinformation, prattle, propaganda and so on have always been there. Social media merely speeds the dissemination of falsehoods. It also has a damaging effect on the filters we rely upon, also known as expertise. In the past five years, I have seen a marked decrease in the respect for expertise. That, frankly, is one of the greatest dangers of social media. When everyone can scream what they think (with or without evidence or justification) then it’s tempting to ignore those who actually know what they’re talking about.
people belive anything. good example is keystone xl. everyone thinks it`s a whole pipe system when in reality it was just supposed to be a shortcut from the oil fields in canada to kansas . in reality keystone has been up and running for the better part of six years.
I have an acquaintance that likes to hold forth at some length on any number of topics. He usually concludes with a triumphant glare exclaiming, “Am I Right?” I replied, “Are you asking or stating?” He got really, really mad.
And has anybody on social media ever changed their minds about a politician or party no matter HOW impassioned the plea is? I doubt it. It’s like trying to convince a Cubs fan to root for the White Sox. So why try?
I remember when loonies just walked the streets talking to themselves and people stepped away from them. Now they can join forces in the web-o-sphere and create Movements (which are often on a par with the other kind of “movements” they create).
Of course it works! Now, where’s my free PBS swag in exchange for the Exposure when I mention it online somewhere? Now, let me check the markets…I see that all of the Exposure I have received over the years has increased in value from Jack Squat to Diddly Squat.

You’re preaching to the choir, here, i was just “saying” that to myself while analyzing the last ep of parks and rec and following a daydream-type deal where i looked at everything i liked with the “characters” in them while in my “hospital room,” imagining how the actors and writers involved proved that point with satire and fun, leading to how all America wants the world to act, etc. Sort of insane coincidence, huh? dan aka ryan
