That bell collar on kitten Roscoe looks like a wrestling champion trophy belt. (And OMC, the illustrations of Roscoe and Quilt are all kinds of whimsy and wonderful!)♥

When Georgia posts these retro strips it always makes me think of all the wonderful felines my Mom (and Dad) and my Grandmother Hannah had throughout my childhood and college years. Then all of a sudden they were all gone but I was married with a wonderful wife, a beautiful young daughter and cats of my own. Where is the tissue on this late Saturday night and where did all the time go?

I sure wish just one tussle was all it took to make friends. But, one of the techs at Spa Vet said they are all doing fine and getting along while there. Hope it’s not to much to hope that such collegiality continues when they get home?

Jim Croce: You Don’t Mess Around With Jim

Well it was in the late seventies

At the house of Nana Dee

There was a cat name of Quilt

    And he grew up until

He was as big as could be!

Quilt was the king of his household

And he had no time for any kids!

And he was proudest of all

    Of the bell he wore!

It was worth to him a few quid!

    And we all know:

    …….

You don’t mess with Elvis’s nap,

You don’t let the Kat Koffee spill,

You don’t try and bully a polydactyl kitten

And you don’t mess around with Quilt!

    …….

One day there moved in with Nana Dee (Dee)

    A lady and her Siamese

And Quilt decided he didn’t need the aggravation

Of a kitten, no he wasn’t pleased!

But Roscoe the Meese wanted to be friends

And he told Quilt, “I like your bell.”

But Quilt turned away and you could here him say,

“Leave me alone or it’ll be all heck!”

    Don’t you know!

    ……

You don’t mess with Elvis’s nap,

You don’t let the Kat Koffee spill,

You don’t try and bully a polydactyl kitten

And you don’t mess around with Quilt!

    …….

Well a cat fight soon ensued,

It was a sound you couldn’t miss

And after awhile you had to smile

When Roscoe and Quilt ceased to hiss

    Roscoe wore Quilt’s collar,

    Quilt had some ruffled fur,

But there was no grief, just a sigh of relief

    When Quilt began to purr!

    And now we know

You don’t mess with Elvis’s nap,

You don’t let the Kat Koffee spill,

You don’t try and bully a polydactyl kitten

And you don’t mess around with Quilt! or his buddy Roscoe!

Sandy, Warrior Princess is starting to look a bit like that. We started buying the special kidney diet food for Saxon recently as his kidneys are beginning to go and his appetite with them. He hates the stuff, she can’t get enough of it and moves in to scarf it down whenever she sees an opportunity.

So we’ve got one very skinny old man cat who almost looks like we’re starving him, and one small tank-like female that looks overindulged.

Yes, more stories of cats of the past! This is fantastic. Roscoe would one day sit on Quilt’s chonky throne, but it seems the bell was enough prize for him that day. I also love the picture serving as panel 5.

Big cats can also be softies. When I moved to this neighborhood, Tank a big, orange tabby would chase my cats. After a couple of years, I got Colette as a kitten. When Tank saw her, he walked right up to her and then feinted, as though he were going to chase her. Instead of running away, she took a step forward and started sniffing his nose. I watched as Tank turned and walked in a circle. His whole world was upside down. He came back and let Colette sniff him. They were friends ever after.

OT: Georgia posted this on Facebook: "Yes, this is a true story from my family! Though it happened before I was born, I’ve heard it retold many times over the years. In real life, this occurred during a small house party/gathering (Nana Dee Dee’s house was often bustling and full of people then. The sounds of Quilt and Roscoe fighting in the kitchen brought a quiet over the living room. Roscoe walked out with the collar around his neck to a rapt audience—which was very much his style. Today is Nana Dee Dee’s birthday, I miss her so much! Since it fell on a Sunday, it only felt fitting to share a family story. She was a heck of a storyteller, with a beautifully deep booming voice. Mom (the Nana) is also a terrific storyteller, and this has always been one of my favorites to request. I hope you enjoyed it! I will share some pictures of the real life Quilt and Roscoe today.EDIT TO ADD: Mom read this, and added this detail. (To properly picture this, Nana Dee Dee’s kitchen had two doors—one from the dining room into the kitchen, and another from the kitchen into the living room. This created a loop through a very pretty, mid-century dining room.) Mom tells us, “What made the incident even funnier was that the two of them ran around the kitchen-dining room door. Quilt chasing Roscoe twice, then on the third circle Roscoe comes out wearing Quiltie’s collar.”

“Quilt” is a peculiar name for a cat, but it sounds right, somehow. Maybe especially for a Felis gigas.

When I tried to put a collar on one of my baby panthers to make it easier to tell them apart, he ran down the hall to the corner bedroom, then came back carrying the collar in his mouth. I tried it on his brother, same result. They’re now 13 years old, and thank Cat their differences are more pronounced now, though it’s still hard to identify them from much of a distance. Lots of “stop that whoever you are” in this house!

Albert loved his stylish red collar (no bell though). One day we heard him in crying the living room. He ran to the sofa and stared intently under it. We realized he wasn’t wearing his collar. Turns out the clasp had failed and the collar had fallen off. He knocked it under the sofa, possibly while trying to bring it to someone with opposable thumbs, and was so upset until we put it back on him. He got a brand-new collar with a working clasp right away.
