I have 18 rose bushes in my yard, at least half of which were chosen for their scent—I stop and smell the roses nearly every day. I also have a yard full of volunteer California poppies (who needs to drive all the way to Lancaster?), and two butterfly gardens which are starting to fill up with monarchs. Also, I’m still eating the last of my naval oranges, my peach trees are budding out, and my avocado just gave my 7 avocados in its first year of bearing. All this in a suburban lot about 70 × 70 feet! That little pot of roses wouldn’t cut it with me.
If I were cynical, I would suspect that this nice, simple cartoon, which merely suggests that we slow down a bit and take some time to appreciate things that are often ignored, is actually a survey to determine the level of cynicism in its readers.

Sometimes, it not just the roses … take a minute … could make a difference in your day.

This could be my neighborhood. They’ve stopped mowing the medians to let the wildflowers grow. Looks kind of like it did when I was a kid.

I see a rose bush and ask myself, “Did I remember to take my allergy meds this morning?”

You got to stop and smell the roses
You’ve got to count your many blessings everyday
You’re gonna find your way to heaven is a rough and rocky road
If you don’t stop and smell the roses along the way

This city of Detroit has flower beds in the sidewalks and in the middle of some of the busier streets. They’ll be full of flowers if it ever warms up.

That’s hopeful. Though in truth, in most cities the roses are plastic. Still, it’s a nice thought.

In some places those roses would be in the middle of a high traffic area. One might stop to smell them but would risk a lot to do it.
