Howtheduck So she wasn’t full time. :-) That’s why she was let go – she was at the bottom of the totem.

A woman wants to be more than a mom like a man wants to be more than a dad. Good for each to have a career as well as raising their kids. But it doesn’t hurt to be a SAHM while the kids are little. Maybe Elly could see about finding a part time job in a bookstore if she doesn’t want to stay home with April full time.

En route from Boston to Chicago by car with my Father, on a holiday from Melbourne, Australia, we stopped at London for refreshments and a snack. I requested a martini. It was served warm, but was very tasty. I didn,t like to complain, but don’t think that I left a tip. Is one expected to tip in Canada?

I’m without a job (not a “mum”) now… my own choice.

I’m throwing myself into independent consulting and other business ventures nowadays. No more dealing with the self-important at work. Now, they’re my clients! :-P

Don’t worry, Elly, you’re a Patterson. Dame Fortune always takes care of Pattersons. Next week you’ll win the lottery, find a massive hoard of gold coins in your backyard, or some other big financial windfall will come tumbling into your lap.

Time we go back to basics and play the hand you were dealt. How many women do you know that are truly a housewife? The population can not figure out why the younger generation is so messed up. Mommies are dealing with board meetings and corporate dinners over being MOM!

Nice to see that John says there is no need to return the new furniture – they are OK. What would the world be like if a professional DENTIST, even though he spends most of his time lounging about the house, can’t afford to buy new furniture? They charge over a $100 just to clean and polish your teeth which takes no more than 5 minutes.

My question was “What am I going to do?”. Not about money or all that, but just what am I going to do all day?

It was a feeling I shared when I retired. The stress of the job was killing me, a bit more every year, but it was a great adventure. Every once in a while I wished for the chase, but less every year. I’m putting together a tutorial on Lightning Hardening of Electronic Sites, not for profit but for keeping the knowledge alive and giving me a useful thing to do.

It’s important that your sense of self-identity come from inside. Neither career nor family should provide the answer to “Who am I?”

I feel sorry for people who don’t know who they are apart from their jobs. I retired five years ago, and I had no period of adjustment whatsoever. This is not to say that I didn’t get a sense of accomplishment from working, but I can honestly say that I am grateful every day that my time is now my own.

If a stay at home Mom is asked what her job is, say “Jack Of All Trades”. You wouldn’t be lying.

I understand Ellie completely. I’d been an A student until I was 21, and working in health care from 1984 until 2000. When I became permanently disabled in 2000 suddenly, I lost my sense of identity. My hubby was a great help in my recovery. When you’re a type A with a strong work ethic, never working again is a real blow. Ellie seems to have a strong work ethic as well.
