I was teaching a bunch of quite young kids about the idea of rules and regulations – everyone knows what to do, people feel secure because there are correct ways of doing things, and the like. One of them looked at me and said “Well, that doesn’t matter to me, I don’t need to worry about rules ..” I said “Oh, you mean that the rules only apply to other people, not to you.” “Yeah”, he said. The rest of the class came down on him like a ton of bricks …
There are so many similarities between Danae and Lucy ans Calvin and Hobbes that I’m surprised that Bill Watterson hasn’t sued Wiley Miller for plagiarism.
In June of 2016, the British people made a bid to be called the dumbest people on the planet when they voted to leave the European Union.
In November of that year, the American people came back to take the title with a vengeance when the majority of citizens- through their actions or inaction – elected an easy to spot liar, grifter, coward, fraud and corrupt, incompetent, unfit Russian dupe to the highest office in the land.
After four years of a ****show where he weakened the US around the world and ignored a pandemic that killed over half a million Americans and destroyed the economy, we are still talking about him again.
We are officially the stupidest people in the world and are permanently demeaned for letting this charade presidency happen.
No Danae, only HALF the people you meet will be below average. However, if you argue with every dumb a…bottom you won’t have time to waltz around looking smug and feeling superior!
I always laughed at the complaints about “You think you’re always right” or “You think you have all the answers,” because, if you realized you were wrong, you’d change your opinion or what you thought the answer was, right? and then you’d think THAT was right, so of course everybody feels that way.
I guess I hadn’t considered people might have Danae’s point of view. That would be something to object to.
Sadly I agree about the stupidity of American voters -An iowa voter said he is gonna vote for Trump because of his principles; what principles? The election wasnt stolen, tye Jan 6 rioters were not patriots-just the opposite. And finally Trump can order seal teams to murder political enemies—-
It is easy to call those who disagree with you stupid. I know a number of people with whom I disagree who are not stupid. If they were truly stupid, they would not be a threat.
For the most part, I believe that they are like little children who can surprise you with their logic, but come up with absurd conclusions based on their lack of knowledge and of experience. Ignorance is not a crime. Choosing to deliberately stay ignorant should be.
Then there are those who do know better but steer their course based on fear and greed. These are selfish individuals who live a miserable existence and do their best to make other people more miserable than they are.
For the most part, I pity these people. They have not been the beneficiaries of the life experiences I’ve had that transformed me from ignorance, fear, hate, greed or they have failed to learn from them.
I’m not taking a bow. Many of my experiences were forced on me. If I can take any credit at all, it would be to have been to have just enough wisdom to see the lessons they presented. Maybe wisdom is a gift and not everyone is lucky enough to get it.
“To believe something is to believe that it is true; therefore a reasonable person believes each of his beliefs to be true; yet experience has taught him to expect that some of his beliefs, he knows not which, will turn out to be false. A reasonable person believes, in short, that each of his beliefs is true and that some of them are false.” —Willard Van Orman Quine, Quiddities (1987), quoted in Jordan Ellenberg, How Not To Be Wrong: The Power of Mathematical Thinking (2014)
Facts remain constant, and are often scientifically provable; it’s opinions about those facts that may vary widely. For example: I may point out to my wife that we have no money, and she will agree, but while neither of us is stupid, our respective opinions about why we have no money, and what to do about it, are quite different.
Somedays I agree with her. Those are the days I watched the news, especially starting about now. I quit watching the news about 4 years ago and I’m not about to start again.
I have a neighbor who thinks an idea is good just because he has it. He bulldozed the small trees in the common area. I had to get the landlord to tell him to leave them alone while I nurture them to grow back.
He suddenly decided that his front yard, whose sidewalk is my only egress to my apartment should be weeded by me. Again, I had to get the landord to set him straight.

That reasoning may not be logical but it’s certainly popular.

This kind of narcissism is not so cute anymore when 35% of Americans think it represents strength and leadership.
