I’ve heard of ‘guilt trip’ humor, but not ‘guilt’ humor…

More like passive/aggressive nagging. If she’s a full time student, it seems a bit of an overreach to expect her to also have a full time high paying job. If you haven’t taught her to write thank you notes by now, you’re never going to. If she doesn’t put gas in the car after she borrows it, stop loaning it to her.

Borrowing the car? Does she not have a car of her own yet?

if Luann does not know the basic skills, of reading and math and English and some basic skills in today world, their not many opportunities for her.

This is totally off topic, but why are they painting a room that horrid color? Baby poop yellow!

This reminds me that after Bernice my two least favorite characters and Frank and Frank.

“Guilt”, it is. “Humor”, it ain’t!!

This strip reminds me of a cartoon from MAD Magazine called “Parental Non-Sequiters”, which depicted parents verbally shooting down their teenagers’ accomplishments and aspirations.

Nuts. Now I won’t ever know what she did.

None of this “guilt humor” will inspire Luann to take any action.

Note that Mom and Dad are both painting at the edges of the comic frames. A subtle fourth wall acknowledgement.

Hmm. Today, Nancy & Frank DO seem a bit harsh to me.

It was probably simply a result of there only being a very few panels to tell the main story…. but to have Frank and Nancy show NO INTEREST in hearing Luann’s “interesting thing she did” just seemed SAD to me.

I get that the jokes were the comments Frank and Nancy made, but to me the humor would have been a bit more “gentle” and IMO “more humorous” if it would have been reworked a bit to NOT have it seem as if Frank and Nancy didn’t give a d@mn about Luann’s interesting thing she did.

Again, I do not think that was Greg & Karen’s intent…. but it did feel a bit that way to me the way today was presented.

Dodged helping whatever room Frank and Nancy were painting? Couples that paint together turn over a new coat together.

Luann see’s her parents painting a room and all she is interested in is what she just did. No wonder her parents have such high hopes, because reality really stinks.

Ok so what did Luann do? Did she learn how to tie her own shoes? Cross the street by herself? Use the potty and finally graduate from pull ups?

Actually, I think GnK are mocking themselves, after all they are father and daughter creatives. Shooting down Luann’s excited information with sarcasm (or snark) can be seen as mean, but humorous sarcasm is a big part of this toon. Applying a balancing test here seems appropriate here.

Will (did) the guilt trip work? Will (did) Luann actually accomplish something?

Frank and Nancy must hate painting. That’s why they turned on the first person who spoke to them.

Poor Luann. Her parents are snarky and unsupportive just like her best friend. she can’t win.

Why would you fill a car if you only borrowed it for a short time? I always say thank you to the person when I receive a gift (no need for notes). How can a college student with no skills get a high paying full time job?

Unloading the dishwasher was an okay question – if she was told to do it, but G&K are obviously ignoring the obvious – DID YOU CLEAN YOUR ROOM.

They sure have low expectations of her, don’t they?

I’m really starting to think that Nancy and Frank must despise Luann. But then again, I can’t be shocked. Greg & Karen have no respect for Luann based on what I’ve seen them to do her in this comic. A lot of cartoonist must really hate their characters. Don’t get me started on what Schulz did to Charlie Brown. I’ll never forgive him for that! How has Luann not been in therapy? That poor girl should be in therapy for everything she’s been through! Insert eye roll emoji…….

Luann is constantly surrounded by persons who make fun of her. Often that person is Bernice, sometimes even her own parents. It’s a good thing that she has a great sense of humour ahd has developed a tough shell that protect her, but sometimes even she gets tired. At least Frank and Nancy realized that maybe it’s not a great way to joke, this is probably why they’re the best parents in the strip.

Oh well…..

High paying full time job? Okay Frank, I guess you really don’t want your daughter to go to school.

What did Luann do? The world may never know.

In all fairness Luann, you did ask them to guess.

Whatever Luann did, it probably didn’t involve cleaning her pigsty of a bedroom.

Guilt tripping. It is what all manipulative parents/people excel in doing.

So when he finally writes that bestseller and makes her millions, she can ignore them when thanking all the people who helped make it real.

Today in episode 17 of TREATING YOUR KIDS LIKE SH!T we see….

Roger uses the Guilt Humor on Nancy and fails miserably. Keep painting, Roger!

I have a few words to say to G&K: WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!

Really, Frank? A “high paying, full time job”? She’s NINETEEN and still in college. Who’s going to offer her a high paying job, especially when she can’t make up her mind what she wants to focus on, AND is still going to school?

G&K expecting us to laugh at Luann’s misery be like………….>

On days like this, I really do wish Luann could get a part-time job that paid enough for her to rent one of those little ‘accessory dwelling units’ people build in their backyards (tiny houses with a bedroom/sitting room, kitchenette and bathroom), or an apartment on top of someone’s garage, and start a new adventure about living on her own…

Luann. Don’t you think you could go outside and at least take down the Christmas decorations?
