There is a midwestern “superstore” chain that gives out coupons automatically when you check out, as Leroy, and, Loretta are experiencing here. Supposedly the computer “sees” what you’ve bought, and, prints out coupons tailored to that. 90% of the time, they were of no use to me, and, even if they were, I’d forget them next time I shopped.
Of course that’s the way it works. The system tracks what you buy. Coupons are to encourage / convince /trick you into buying something you aren’t already buying. It’s bad marketing to give you a discount off of stuff you’re going to buy anyway.
My wife only checks coupons once in a while for one or two stores, but she shops for groceries, etc. at at least seven stores and knows which ones haves sales on certain products.
One grocery store used to print coupons at the checkout based on what I bought. If I bought some XYZ products, I might get a coupon for a discount on 3 XYZ products. If I used that coupon, I might get a coupon for 4 XYZ products. If I used that coupon, I might get a coupon for 5 XYZ products.
We have a couple of Kroger’s within our town boundaries that print different coupons on their receipts. One of them has BOGO dinners at our local IHOP, so on occasion we’ll shop that one to stock up on dinners out.
There’s a perverse kind of powertrip that results in a business owner printing out coupons, shipping them to people’s homes, making customers sift through pages of them to get a discount during the active window—all instead of just charging less for a product to get people to come into your store. Yes, this way you’re not just making a profit, you’re also responsible for wasting a lot of people’s time and creating a ton of garbage.

The online grocery I shop at includes coupons you can click when you add an item to your cart.

The drugstore also does that. What a waste of paper.

Or they’re for an item you just bought and the coupon expires well before you’d need to buy it again.

Two feet facing and yep! Coupons for manicures at shops nowhere near where I live nor for what I would use!! (CVS does this a lot!)

And if the coupons ARE for something that you need, the shelf will be empty. That’s the way Meijer does it.

But my supermarket sends me about six coupons in the mail each month for items I usually buy, and if use most of them it’s worth about $5.

I’ve used coupons at health food stores. I was pleased to get some great vitamins at a discount. Big box stores are a different story.

On the rare occasion that I go to CVS, I always remember to thank them for more wallpaper.
