I think Spouse and I have reached about the same age as these protagonists. We motivate ourselves to do the laundry without any real problem. But then I pitch right in to help so itâs not a âherâ job.
Laundry is the only housework job I love. Throw it in the washer and take it out. Put it out in the sun to dry or use dryer. Bingo. Done. No washboard scrubbing needed. Just buy clothes that donât need ironing. Luckily, the times we live in embrace sportswear for most things.
Earl is retired, Opal is working hard as ever. Time for Earl to move his lazy rear and pick up some household chores. (This is my standard complaint about this strip, as the one who does all the work in the house. My wife is an Earl.)
How often does she do laundry? Thatâs a big pile of laundry for just two people. My wife and I wouldnât have half that much even if we combined the clothes, towels, and bed linens we use in a week.
Given we see them in the same outfits most days, hard to see how that much laundry could pile up.. and what we do see does not include any unmentionables.
When I am in a hurry and donât have the time to jot it down on a shopping list, I do set down an item as a visual reminder that it needs be added to that list when I get the time.
We actually argue over who gets to do laundry and dishes. We like it because we like the warmth on our hands. Unfortunately, I have gotten old and slow before my wife did, but she sometimes lets me take a turn anyway.
When I was growing up, all we had was a wringer washer and a kitchen sink to rinse the wash. No dryer of course, and five people to wash for. With a washer and dryer, what is Opalâs problem?

Earl doesnât look motivated either.

Better hurry, or the pets will claim it for their own.

Now I have âDirty Laundryâ by Don Henley running through my head.

Maybe do it more often? That is a lot of laundry!

Keep adding to the pile until the first person breaks down?

It might evolve into a semi-sentient life form â âWash Me! â if by accident a âsmart phone was left in a pants pocket.

I donât know why he had to ask what it is. Looks pretty obvious.

Proves Opal was a woman of the 1960s.. not one bra in the pile.

Nice thing about laundromat is I can do any number of loads in about 1 1/2 hours.

Thereâs still room to walk around it, so it will be there for a while.

Now Iâm wondering if Opalâs created a pile of dirty dishes in the kitchen.
gsawyer101 10 months ago
Put it in Earlâs chair. At least he has to move the pile
kaycstamper 10 months ago
If you place them between Earl and the tv, HE may get motivated!

Sheesh, how many purple polka-dot outfits does Opal have? Also, Earl in shorts? He must have run out of regular pants!

Thatâs a buttload of laundry for a retired couple

Reminds me of the pile of Mt. Washmore that I had to climb in front of the washing machine when I was a child every time I did my own laundry.

Hmm, this seems more like something Earl would do. Oh well, they are kind of bonding over procrastination, so good enough.

That will certainly make the living room smell nice.

Never air your dirty laundry in front of a picture window. (And I hope that laundry is piled on a recliner, because that would be a lot!)

The trick is to find something else to avoid that is more intimidating, then the laundry will be a nice distraction.
tammyspeakslife Premium Member 10 months ago
Itâs easier if you donât have to haul it for a half a mile with a 3 yr old in tow and no car or anyone to help.

Smell COULD become a motivating factor

Running out of undies may become the deciding factor on the next load of laundry to be done.

The first step is to sort it. Then they can wash whichever type of clothes they need the most. Leave the rest here for now.
