WOW—Calvin is really in touch with God if his prayer can persuade Him to turn on the TV! Now, if he would only pray for world peace and the end of poverty and bigotry.
There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. [ … ] We are controlling transmission. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear..
A happy weekending for Calvin. He’s had a pretty rough time this week but he got the better of Dad yesterday and he’s now enjoying Saturday morning TV. It reminds me of a week of strips from the beginning of September. The five weekday strips had Calvin suffering on his first day back at school before the Saturday strip had Calvin and Hobbes hurrying downstairs to watch Saturday morning TV.
I so old that I remember the only thing on the tv screen early on Saturday, or any morning for that matter, was a test test pattern. If my Dad was up early before the local stations began broadcasting, he would set up a mirror across from the tv so he could observe the tv screen while he sat behind it to adjust the appearance & position of the screen by turning some screws on the back side of the tv.
I remember seeing a news video of the panic in Hawaii in 2018 when an incoming nuke test alert accidentally went out as an actual “THIS IS NOT A DRILL! INCOMING MISSLE HEADING FOR HAWAII”. People running in the streets. One woman stops, and bows her head. Is she praying? Is she looking at her phone? Is she praying to her phone?
I read somewhere that you can be hypnotized by staring at a light that’s blinking every three seconds (although faster blinking would be more effective). Next time you’re watching TV, check how often the scene changes.
Perhaps the first and only negative comment The Count has made about this comic but The Count finds this one unsettling. However, on a lighter note, looking forward to tomorrow (always do, actually). Maybe dinosaurs or Spaceman Spliff in full, glorious color, boy howdy. God Bless America!
Cal’s tv is an early progenitor of modern tv ads for frenetic people. Rapidly flickering scenes, loud music, unreadable blurbs, circus clown atmosphere.
Kinda remember a few decades back research that said such activity on movie screens effected epileptic responses in certain viewers. Wonder if that still holds true.
I remember getting up on Saturday mornings and turning on our tv still showing the test pattern until the national anthem and Rocky Jones Space Ranger came on.
if tiktok existed back then I bet poor Bill wouldn’t have been able to do this comic because the page he was drawing on would have been saturated by his tears

Our first color tv was a Sylvania in 1968. We had it for several years but I think it was in the repair shop as much as it was in our house.
