What is it with Bernice? She agreed to come out, she thought it was a good enough idea to try but immediately turned around and opened a book. So why did she bother? And since she is a fictional character one has to ask why has the authors made into such an uninteresting character? What’s the point of having Bernice as a character if she doesn’t contribute to the plot?
Notice that Luann’s hairdo was curly and romantic in the first two panels and deflated back to her normal hairdo in the last panel? Poof. Bernice popped her spirit and hairdo.
Luann must be regretting not inviting Tara to this romance novels-inspired picnic. Bernice doesn’t seem at all interested in living the experiences she reads or dreams about. Maybe Luann will be able to motivate her, or the sudden appearance of Jack, or Nil, or Piro will light the burning fire of passion that Bernice constantly represses, because she’s afraid that it will burn her.
In the second panel Luann sounds like she is going to a Pride Parade. A little late but it’s the thought that Counts. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I’ve actually met people through books. I carry a book with me at all times. I love scifi/fantasy – and when people see what I’m reading, they’ll ask how it is, if I’ve read something else that they have, what authors are my/their favorites, etc. We also discuss what books made great movies, what movies were awful because they didn’t stick with the story-line in the book. Books make for some great conversations!
Reading about “romance” IS easier than trying to find and experience it, which is why you’ll be a lousy counselor, Bernice—no real first-hand experience.
So it appears what lit Bernice’s interest in dressing up and hauling all the picnic stuff out to the park was to sit and read a book. Hmmm, Ok, whatever floats her boat. But why go through all the effort of dressing up (for others to notice you, right?), only to bury your head in a book miss any possible spontaneous social interaction, and let the world pass you by? She could have stayed in an airconditioned home with a comfy chair and achieved the same thing, no?
Did all this “sashaying and skipping and being irresistible” take place between panels? Because all we’ve seen is Luann lounge around the park like she lounges around her bedroom. How’s she gonna find romance when the only person she’s interacted with is Bernice?
Though it does fit the pattern of behavior for her: make an extremely small effort, then furiously pat herself on the back for it while also overstating said effort, and then act confused when the universe doesn’t reward her by dropping success right in her lap. All that’s left is for her to quit in frustration when her miniscule effort doesn’t immediately pay off. Hopefully the pattern gets broken this time around.
WOW Bernice is so passive aggressive. She was on board with the whole sashay in the park idea when they were at home, excited when they were getting ready, made the effort when they were loading the car, and now she acts like she doesn’t remember the plan??? Does she have ADD? Or maybe a brain tumor? Or does she just like raining on everyone’s (especially Luann’s) parade?
If I were Luann I would seriously call her out on this one and never include her in my plans again.
This wasn’t Luann’s idea. After crapping on every other outdoor idea, it was Bernice who eventually said that they should put on cute clothes and sashay through the park (see the 7/17 strip). She got ridiculously excited about it too.
So why is Bernice now pretending like she’s never heard of this idea and that it’s the dumbest thing she’s ever heard?
I can see both sides, unfortunately, I tend to be ambiguous about flirting with men. Fear of the unknown, the known and unable to make a decision. It’s easier to just read about it, though ‘romance’ novels make me gag.
Sorry folks, but this story line is just yet another “exercise in nothingness”. Luann and Bernice talked about doing things in the park, but they’re not going to do even one of those things. By the end of this week, everything will be just as it was at the start of the story, and nothing major will have happened.
This has been just two weeks of “simply marking time”. AS USUAL!
What, are they in junior high? Or elementary school even? These young women are old enough to be married with children. Adolescence lasts a long time these days, at least in our culture.

Luann is right. They went to the park and dressed up to try to experience what they read about. Now is not the best time to read.
I hope they walk around and encounter someone there at the park. It would make this a lot more interesting.
Maybe.. Jack?

Your choice Bernice, you do not need to find another in life, if you are satisfied with finding it in books.

Back in my dating days, I never had luck finding boys in a park. Usually you need to go where the boys are, like maybe a ball-park.

Okay, Lu.
First mistake: You brought Bernice along.
Second Mistake: You’re impatient.
Third mistake: If you’re looking for romance, you’re in the wrong place.
Get yourself invited to a party or something.
