But there was no such thing as software in those days (on the contrary, that Trojan Horse was packed with hardware)!

I once saw a company with the name ā€œTROJANā€. Its symbol was the head of a wooden horse ā€“ the very thing that was instrumental in the Trojan disaster. Eh.. ?

At the Siege of Acre in 1190s, the Crusaders built a huge trebuchet to hurl rocks into the city. They named it ā€œMal Voisineā€. ā€œBad Neighbor.ā€

The reference is to unexpected interference with normal life. That could be considered mal[evil]ware in all its forms.

People worry about malware and viruses and organizations spend lots of money on computer security.

The biggest threat is with the software running between the userā€™s ears. Social Engineering or phishing, of which trojans could be a part, is the biggest threat to any operation.

The truth is, for the average Windows user, the anti-virus package included is good enough. I also recommend a package called Malwarebytes. They have a free version.

Otherwise, practice safe computing. If you see a notice about any of your accounts, donā€™t click on the link. Go to the official site or call the official number.

Omygod! My Bank of America account has been hacked. Let me click that link. Oh wait, I donā€™t have a Bank of America account.

Most of the time they target seniors who are less literate about high tech devices and especially susceptible to scare tactics.
