Not the same setting but Ralphie’s soliloquy in Christmas Story can apply here. “But it was gone, all gone! No turkey! No turkey sandwiches! No turkey salad! No turkey gravy! Turkey Hash! Turkey a la King! Or gallons of turkey soup! Gone, ALL GONE!”
We didn’t do a “traditional” turkey dinner this year. None of us particularly cares for turkey, and we have no family nearby. The only tradition menu item everyone wanted was the homemade cranberry sauce… so we made lasagna with wilted spinach and garlic on the side with vanilla ice cream topped with cranberry sauce for dessert. The lasagna didn’t last very long with 5 of us in the house, and we made 3 9×13 pans of it!
I used to roast a turkey every couple of months, and package it up for sandwiches for work lunches. It’s cheaper, tastier, and healthier than buying lunchmeat from the store.
My mother was a depression-era kid. About a week after Thanksgiving she started making the weirdest meals with the remnants of the turkey. Finally making soup with nothing more the bones themselves.
I have one serving of sweet potatoes left. The ham and bean soup doesn’t count because I made it fresh Sunday from ham scraps, the ham bone, and pinto beans.
In another 6 days, my wife will be home and I will be so glad. I have already lost 5 plus pounds on my cooking, but the kids seems to be weathering my cooking well.
Not sure how finicky Luddie is, but if one of my cats turned their nose at leftovers, I would have second thoughts about eating same leftovers. Could give new meaning to the term Turkey Trots…
We just finished ours yesterday. I will say, it was an AMAZING turkey I made, but yea. Kind of over Turkey for a month or so. Probably smoke one in March is my guess.
Due medical issues I haven’t been able to cook a turkey (or really anything) since 2019. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas I would cook both a ham and a turkey. I worry about food-borne illnesses. I would freeze about half of the bird within a few days, but I still felt like that was pushing it. I never kept any poultry for more than 5 days. Non-cured pork got tossed at the same time. Leftovers can make you sick. It won’t hit as often as raw food that was badly prepared, but it is not worth taking a chance.
In my house it’s just me and my adult disabled son. He can’t eat large amounts of anything. Last year three of my kind friends were distressed when they heard I did not plan cooking a turkey. Each of them have us a turkey weighing between 16 and 21 pounds. I had told them it wasn’t cost, I just didn’t want to cook one. They didn’t believe me. To get the meat to fit into the freezer I cooked all three and carved them.We are still eating the leftovers from last year. I’m grateful for so many very kind friends. Just wish they would learn I say only what I mean.
I was always kinda sad when the leftovers were gone. I love pretty much the entire lot of foods from Thanksgiving, especially the turkey and the cranberries.
We were, alas, done with the turkey and leftovers far too soon. Turkey sammiches with mayonnaise and lots of pepper RULE. We had enough to make turkey croquettes this year, yay! Sooo yummy.

Does anyone have Thanksgiving leftovers a week later? Ours were gone by Sunday. And that’s only because we ordered pizza on Saturday.

We have four bags of turkey in broth and another two quarts of broth in the freezer. Freezing turkey in broth prevents freezer burn.

No problem. Growing up, my family celebrated Christmas much like Thanks Giving with a similar dinner offering.

A week is a bit too long for leftover turkey, stuffing, gravy. I’d say the outside is 4 days. Tomorrow, Arlo gets ptomaine.

My understanding is that you can safely consume the leftovers from Thanksgiving through the following Monday. Maybe just the turkey itself.

Does this compulsion to eat leftovers go back to our parents (or grandparents) who survived the Great Depression?

My wife is insisting that I toss the rest of the turkey soup I made the day after.

Ludwig apparently feels the same way I do about dried out left over turkey. And if I were a cat that’s probably exactly what I’d do with it.
