Bernice just keeps on being a horrid friend. She always refuses to see the bright side of things or live in the moment like Luann. Plus she is studying to be a psychologist, being understanding and open minded are big parts of that. Though seeing as she likes to bring people down, ruin fun occasions, and talk about people behind their backs, I don’t see her having a very long career or having regular patients.
This part of the arc has been not at all positive regarding Luann, and in fact has been rather irritating. That has to have been intentional on GnK’s part, so I do wonder why and where they’re taking this.
I dunno… Luann seems to be in a crappy mood. And she hardly paid any attention to Jack at all in this arc. I mean, she literally said only four words to him. And two of them was his name. This is rather surprising, considering she invited him over to dinner not too long ago. So what happened between then and now that made her less attentive and more brusque towards him???
Are Jack and Bernice gonna be a thing now? I always thought he would THE ONE for Luann. Always proper and showed interest in her but she was blind to it. She’ll go on looking for those pretty boys that she’ll never get!
Is this a cliffhanger or what? Side note: Why is everyone still bashing Bernice?
Cliffhanger: Yesterday, Bernice mentioned (to the effect that) Luann had been her best friend; unspoken is that the two have drifted apart. Spoken is that she might be in the market for a new friend. Come today, the double intendré is, Jack volunteers at the shelter: Will Bernice come for a Jack Russell, or a Jack…
Bernice bashing: Good grief! She just bared her soul to Jack. Not sure whether she has done so with Luann, though the odds would be that, yes, she has, BUT! Does Luann listen?
If there’s anything I “learned” this week (to the extent that you can “learn” anything from a comic strip), it’s that Bernice is much, much more than the person making wisecracks at Luann on Sundays.
And I’m also thinking we’ve been rather unfair to her, not having heard what her life is like.
Okay, can Bernice stop putting down her friend now? It’s insufferable. How awful to have to share your house with a person who’s sick of you and is afraid to flush the toilet before sunrise. And what kind of pet does Jock think Bernice capable of taking care of, an illegal ferret?
So, Bernie wants to trade Luann in for a different pet? Will this result in Luann being up for adoption at the shelter? I can hear it now when someone sees her at the shelter:
Apparently spending two hours getting dressed up to take Puddles to the dog park to teach him how to fetch (after all these years) is “wild and spontaneous” fun for Luann. Luann totally ignored Bernice and was very dismissive to Jack (“Hey Jack”, “Bye Jack”). ANd it’s one thing to snark with a close friend but not cool if you snark about your friend to your friend’s guy friend. Bernice has upstaged Luann with Nancy and Frank, now encroaching upon Jack. Next week, the comic will be renamed “Bernice”. At least the prancing dog in the background is having a good time!
I can see Bern taking Jack’s offer to heart and when University starts again she will suddenly come up with a research project involving animals and pre Doc Jack enters the picture again. Not sure how Luann will feel about it but G & K certainly left the door for this scenario to develop……. Now time to see how Gunnie and Bets are doing!
I really got this arc wrong. Luann certainly had no interest in Jack and Jack seemed to make a connection with Bernice. Luann was in and out of the strip showing no friendship to Jack.
This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship. I can already see Bernice volunteering in the shelter with Jack, loving all animals ♡. Maybe she might even meet Zane, busy practicing as a vet at that shelter. This looks awesome! But I’m sad that Luann seems so angry that Puddles doesn’t want to play with her.
Luann was 13 for an awfully long time, and now she’s still supposed to be 18 or 19, still in college (no post-degree job), and living at home like most college students (but not on campus.) She hasn’t yet reached her 20s where she can spread her wings and fly, so she’s just not there yet (and may never be, like almost all characters in comics.)
But you and your friends sound like you had lots of fun in your 20s and had pretty interesting lives :) Glad you shared, cuz I enjoyed reading it.
Good girl Bernice go get him.Luann is pouting, probably because Bernice is more interested in reading than doing nothing. Luann hasn’t grown up. She is not interested in Jack, just wants to hang around. What happened to that young lady who made school work fun for the little kids. She needs a life or maybe Gunther
I like the idea of Jack helping Bernice pick out a pet – if she got a puppy or even adult dog from the shelter it would do wonders for Puddles. My older dog started playing again and having all kinds of fun when we added a new playmate to the family.
You know? This whole week reminded Me of something. Luann dragging her reluctant friend Bernice to the dog park, where Bernice runs into and hits it off with Luann’s “guy pal,” Jack, while Luann ends up looking like a twit. Doesn’t that remind You of another instance?
Think back to 2017 when Gunther dragged a reluctant Tiffany to dinner with Al and Irma. And Tiffany re-met, and “hit it off” with (GAG) Les, while Gunther ended up looking foolish. What happened then with Gunther, Tiffany and Les, is happening now with Bernice and Jack. And now, it is Luann looking foolish. The only thing missing here is Jack showing Bernice the “cherry trick.” And I suspect THAT will come later.
The parallels between Gunther & Les, and Bernice & Luann are striking. Two unlike people forced by circumstance, to live together. BUT, whereas Gunther realized right away that he screwed up that night by taking Tiffany to dinner, it has yet to dawn on Luann what has transpired at the dog park between her two friends. And what will happen when it does “dawn” on Lu? Another food fight?
I’m really hoping that We move on to a new arc next week. Because if this one continues, then I’m awfully afraid that We’re going to get an “after action” report, with Bern gushing to Luann about Jack. And THAT is where the ‘Green-eyed Monster’ may show up. ;)
Bernice probably can’t take in a pet right now while she’s living with the DeGroots. But a zillion years ago she was very good with training that leader dog. When she had to give him up, she was a mess (understandably!). That’s when she met Zane. She bonded with his dog, too. In the arc where Zane was trapped in the fire at the bookstore was one of the best in the run of this comic, IMO—the strip where he had boosted Bernice up to the window and then handed the dog up to her was the strip that hooked me on the comic.
I don’t believe Sally Margaret is bragging here. She is simply stating the facts of her life and her history. Clearly, she has done a lot with her life and continues to do so. I think she was Simply stating that Luanne could be doing a lot more with her life than she is currently doing. And that these special and amazing years only come around once in a lifetime.
G&K have introduced pets into the lives of other characters (Les, Irma, Al) who in some cases have been transformed by it. Maybe they are going to do it again with Bern. I look forward to an arc that finds Bern (with Jack) at the animal shelter. I wonder if it would be the same shelter that Al and Irma went to.
This week has (probably) been the lowest, darkest, most dismal, week in the history of the relationship between the Luann and Bernice characters. All other “break-ups” have been fiery, emotional ones; easily repaired. This is COLD!
Why does every word that comes out of Bernice’s mouth sound belittling? She seems to have a very narrow view of the world. Someone needs to jolt her world.
So if Jack starts visiting Bern at the DeGroots, Luann will need to take a powerful leap into getting a life. I thought maybe the uninhibited Tara could help, but yes, that might turn out badly for Lu if Tara is into drugs or whatever. I think Tara has had a catch and release pattern with guys – there might be a good potential arc if Luann likes one of Tara’s castaways.
OK! We’ve all agitating around Luann and Bernice snagging male companionship this summer. So it looks like Jack and Bernice… so far! I still that Luann will be thrown in with Br’er Bill York.
But let’s look at a Jack-Bern matchup. Jack is flashy, outgoing, a player, physical. Bernice is frail, introspective, constrained. Jack is an ESFP on the Myer-Briggs personality scale while Bernice is INTP. Not as good match. But then maybe that’s supposed to be the point of this match up. The dog park is the perfect “date” for these two. Jack would play with the dog(s) while Bernice read or observed Jack’s interaction with people and animals. Blah
No! As I’ve said before. Jack and Tara would be the dynamic duo.
Not long ago (in Luanniverse time), Luann’s idea of fun with Bernice was a trip to New York, topped off by sneaking into an adult club. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
