Tunnel mining is better than strip mining, because the plants on the surface are still there. Tunnel mining call lead to small earthquakes 50 years later.
My Dad worked in the coal fields all his life. Surface mining. Didn’t get Black Lung but had respiratory problems most of the time. Anyone that works in underground mining has my undying admiration. It may be ‘just a job’ to some, but it is dirty, back breaking work with huge health and safety risks. And just in case, here’s a link to a 1911 picture of a coal mining crew. In the 1950s, the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn featured a certain central European ethnic group. My cousin went to a class there to learn folk dancing from that country. So this is not what I originally thought Pole dancing to be.
I little information on strip mining. In Eastern Ohio large areas were strip mined for coal. They have now been reclaimed. See The Wilds as an example. The water is safe and clean and thousands of acres are available for recreation and wild life refuges.
Reminds me of an old NonSequitur strip. This guy complaining of being congested while little cars were driving in heavy traffic all over his body. Wiley is king of merging the disparate.
Definitely not as good an idea as it might have been 100 years ago before mining started using so much machinery to do the work. The guys would have looked well fit from all the manual labor.

Sure, that’s all very old mining technology there, but you’d think they ’d come up with a better safety alternative for the canary in the coal mine.
