That is how the moonrise looked on Friday but I’ll admit I didn’t know it was a waning gibbous. We live and learn.

my comment is regarding Janis. she missed the whole point altogether. He experienced it LIVE and personal and she could have been WITH him making a memory that would last longer than reading the pages of a book that she might be able to pick up any time. The moment will not repeat itself. Time moves forwards and you cannot return to that point in time. When Arlo is gone she will wish she had those moments when she was sitting outside with him in marvel to experience a waning Gibbous moon…never mind that someone never wrote a love song about a waning gibbous moon, not yet they haven’t <3

Actually, that isn’t true. When in high school, a friend of mine and I (upon learning that there actually is something called a “waning gibbous moon”) composed the following (more or less to the tune of “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder”):

Oh, the moon is waning gibbous! Oh, the moon is waning gibbous! Oh, the moon is waning gibbous, but my heart is full of love. For you.

How Arlo knows this, I have no clue.

Still haven’t, I fear, learned the “gibbous” stuff; I really should.

gibbous comes from Latin hunchbacked or bulge. Personally, a waning (or waxing) gibbous looks to me like it’s squished a bit, not bulging or humped. Waning gibbous is when it was full, and part is shadowed or missing – betwen full and half moon. Waxing gibbous it is almost full, except for a part is missing – between half and full.

Between new and half or between half and new is crescent, waxing or waning, respectively.

Throughout the cycle, the moon will be waxing each day, or increasing how much of it you can see lit up at night, then waning, or decreasing in size until it disappears.
