When Colette was first learning to hunt, she brought me a four-inch-high toy doll which she had dragged in by its blonde hair. I have no idea why she thought it was prey.
Today is Ballpoint Pen Day. My fascination with the things began when I was about three or four years old. I promptly took it apart and figured out how it worked (yep, I’m like that). Loved the different colors of ink you could get, and that it always made a precise line. My favorite color was the medium blue found in some pens, as opposed to the dark navy blue that was common. I also preferred fine point pens, the finer the better. (Hated crayons that weren’t sharp—much too imprecise. Absolutely had to have the box with a sharpener in it.) I come by this honestly, my father was a master mechanic and machinist. I also hated (still do) fubsy, fat diameter pens, probably because I have large hands but short fingers. I bet even Gent, with his bear paws, has longer fingers than I do, not even counting the claws.
My fascination with pens continues to this day, interrupted by a brief flirtation with drafting, fountain, and calligraphy pens in my twenties. Toebean addicts will understand.
My little sister and I were LARGELY never accepted by our parents’ big calico shorthair, who had been there for 7 years before I came around.
The exception was Karen’s [yes, really!] plastic doll crib, which Ginger would not only occupy quite willingly but toss the intended occupant out. Still would probably not have let the human-kittens pet her while she was in it, though.

A cat bed is by definition anything a cat sleeps in, regardless of its original purpose – persist, Elvis, persist!

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
Early one morning
Queen Catshepsut the Golden:
Opened my eyes,
Rose from my cat bed,
The sun a bright red,
The sky was turning blue.
And in the East, the cats were napping,
So much has happened,
What’s the best to do?
Enter the Queen’s staff
The Queen: I rule my cats
The Queen: With my best wisdom
Throughout my kingdom,
Questions come anew,
In troubled times,
The storms are breaking,
The world is waking,
What’s the best to do?
The Staff Chorus:
The thunders crash,
A flash of light
We’re all right here
We’ll be alright,
Just remember though the storms come,
You are not alone!
The Queen:
Through all the storms,
We stick together,
In stormy weather,
We will all stay true,
The sun will shine,
The light’s returning,
We all are learning
What’s the best to do!
From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: Any Dream Will Do.

Ah, sweet kitties. Your innocence gives me much comfort. Thank you.
“The Older I Get
I once heard the whisper of falling snow,
saw a spark in the eye of a coal-black crow,
felt the power and awe of a swift river’s flow,
the older I get, the less I know.
My hair was once braided in golden cornrows,
by Jamaican friends in an island below,
a psychic once asked me about Jericho,
the older I get, the less I know.
The hot southern asphalt that scalded my toe,
the rope swing that swung us, to and fro,
Christmas Eve and the tree in the firelight’s glow,
the older I get, the less I know.
Everyone’s gone, but where did they go?
Why is my spirit sinking so low?
Is it true we reap only what we sow?
the older I get, the less I know."
