I’d like to design a dress, but I don’t have the artistic ability. Bet ’twill be wonderful.

Well for all those who said something would happen to delay or stave off the wedding, Greg just let it be known that she will be getting married in December.
Namrepus about 8 years ago
Days like this, I wish I had the drawing talent of a banana slug. Good luck to all the entrants.

Now, to get my Crayolas® out…
mischugenah about 8 years ago
Not me. If I were a stick figure I wouldn’t be able to draw a decent self-portrait.

Okay, time to find your inner Gunther!
luann1212 about 8 years ago
As a proud Trufan, and trust me I did not get the idea for my username from Luannfan.com although I think that is fantastic, and I briefly checked it out, and its very interesting and I am trying to figure out how I will dip my toe in Luannverse, that it invites. I don’t think I will try to suggest a wedding dress, I have no artistic ability. I think they are all beautiful, but then I am kind of a sentimental guy. It should be interesting, and a masterful marketing stroke what will be suggested, and what will end up being the dress. I am a TJ defender, but on the grooms side I strongly suggest though that he does NOT design anything, or suggest the grooms and groomsmen suit or tuxedo. I don’t know though he might have a bit of Gunther design sense in him (lol). Great!! Now I will go to bed. I have no Gunther design sense, I just know what looks great, and Toni will be drawn at the limits of comic art I just know.
Airman about 8 years ago
Well, I guess this means they won’t elope.
Skylark about 8 years ago
Anxious to see the results. Great idea!! Whose fans are more involved that Luann’s??
SactoSylvia about 8 years ago
Greg could have Gunther make a reader-inspired dress. I’m guessing that could be arranged. ;)
SactoSylvia about 8 years ago
From most bridesmaids’ perspectives, the wedding planning doesn’t really begin until the wedding party goes dress shopping – or starts talking about options for bridesmaid’s dresses, if they’re going to be custom-made. Greg captured Luann’s excitement perfectly!
davidweinstock about 8 years ago
all tv shows and comic strips deteriorate after a time, and when the creativity is gone, the writers start having characters marry and or have babies. larson and watterston had enough sense to retire and recycle their great work. luann will live on in mediocrity.
blunebottle about 8 years ago
Fine. Now let’s see if we can get Guy Gilchrist to do the same for Fritzi Ritz. Time she got hitched, too.
jmarkoff2 about 8 years ago
Toni should go for Betazoid wedding fashion!

For all of you who want to but can’t draw just find elements you like on line and photoshop a dress.
ravonlea about 8 years ago
I’m creative in a writing kind of way… but I have no artistic ability. Too bad I can’t describe my idea for a wedding dress to someone who can draw and have them draw and create my vision. ( sigh). Great idea Team Evans and good luck to all the entrants.

What’s the worst that can happen?
tom_wright about 8 years ago
How about a bikini with white lace. Not too much white lace, mind you, just a small fringe.
desert-cat about 8 years ago
Brad is not the elope type, though his tender heart considered that for Toni’s sake. Quite a man, he is.

I’m not that good at witty comments, but I can draw!

gotta have lace ….

I can’t draw but whoever does submit make sure the dress has a codpiece.
JPuzzleWhiz about 8 years ago
What does everyone think?I’m not “evryone,” I’m a “somebody”! ;o)I’ve actually put some thought into how she might look. :)Like a comic strip character in a wedding dress? ;o)

The dress will have to be white or there will be another 500 comments.
jrankin1959 about 8 years ago
I guess this is confirmation – yes, the date is solid… no more kidding around.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
I am thinking rococo/neomodern with a splash of newagey kind of thing.

Wedding in December? Did Brad and Toni make the date official or is Greg doing so now?
ACTIVIST1234 about 8 years ago
Even if you’re not submitting a drawing, go to LuannFan.com to get invited!

I can draw but I would have no way to scan it an send it.
kenhense about 8 years ago
I don’t remember seeing Toni in a dress. Maybe they’ll get married in fireman’s outfits…
Queen of America about 8 years ago
I wish I could draw. I see a dress in my head but getting onto paper will never happen.

Hopefully something very, very diaphanous.

5Though I have no drawing skills for clothing (I can, however, draw a damn fine amoeba! :) ), what I think would be especially nice for Toni is a wedding gown of simplicity with a cut and style similar to much of the clothing worn by Jackie Kennedy during the Camelot era. To me, that sort of design in a wedding dress would be a pleasantly elegant rendition of Toni’s peronality.

I’ll tell you what it won’t be: a burlap sack.
Luanaphile about 8 years ago
My dress sketches are on page 243 of Donald Trump’s tax returns for 2015. That way they are totally secure from prying eyes.
mkchell14 about 8 years ago
a white fireman dress, or shop till you drop and just wear Luann’s mom’s dress.
SukieCrandall Premium Member about 8 years ago
Sounds pretty. I plan to look at the art piece. The weight woukd be painful, though. Cost, too. Just bulk buying enough Swarovski crystals to sew over a purse could cost almost as much as Toni wanted to spend on the dress. better to just use some to sew on an accenting design.
LadyJ4444 about 8 years ago
What a fun idea! Wish I could draw.

A reader-designed wedding dress for a comic strip wedding? There’s an original idea…that Greg, er, “borrowed” from Bill Holbrook
Outsideplaying about 8 years ago
I can’t draw at all, but I have in my mind what would look stunning on Toni. Simple, fitted sheath with a flared skirt in ivory silk-satin. A little bit of lace overlay on top. Nothing glittery. Good luck to all the participants.

Is there a subREDDIT yet on how to skew the results?
nomomaniacs about 8 years ago
I think that they will go shopping for the dress and find everything way too expensive. Luann will offer to design the dress, Gunther will make it and Luann’s design will be the one provided by the contest! Don’t have Gunther design the dress!
Susan123 about 8 years ago
I will bet that Gunther will eventually design and make Tonis dress.
Susan123 about 8 years ago
I am sure that Gunther has matured considerably since the last time that we saw one of his creations. So his designing ability will have matured too if asked. And Toni said the dress would be white, of course.
ironman01 about 8 years ago
There should be some great submissions.
BJShipley1 about 8 years ago
For anyone out there who thinks Gunther should design the dress, see the strip from April 12th, 2011 for why that’s a terrible idea. (I don’t know how to embed strips on here, otherwise I’d just post it)
Mikeyj about 8 years ago
I will probably design a dress, sadly, the contest isn’t open to Canadians, so, I will just post it here, if I do it!

I can’t wait until Shannon wants a wedding dress too – of course she will want to marry Bwad too!! *Maybe that is the one Gunther will make (although I would love him to make all the dresses and then suddenly he gets discovered and has a line for NYFW)
Best part would be if they decide to adopt Shannon from Jonah and that is part of the ceremony!

Luann needs to get Gunther to design Tony’s wedding dress

How about a Toni Paper Doll with several of the wedding dress ideas and a trousseau?
j_m_kuehl about 8 years ago
Something along the lines of Vicky the biker (Rose Gumbo’s) alter ego from Rose is a Rose, That is to say a Black leather Mini Skirt

Dress designing is so far out of my world, I don’t even understand the terms you folks are using. And, my own style would probably make Marcel Marceau scream.

Addendum: Sorry, but I just checked 9 Chickweed Lane and I gotta say it……………that’s just the kind of girl Gunther needs. His tachometer will go into the red.
muneflauer about 8 years ago
Hopefully something tasteful with coiled fire hoses.

Okay, here is something which might please not only Toni’s desire for simplicity, but also the possibilities of EITHER the dress having been Nancy’s if hers was homemade, given current ages OR Gunther having a pattern to work from, AND it fulfills multiple design preferences stated by commenters, not fully for any but it is a lovely basic design.https://www.etsy.com/listing/121695051/on-sale-1990s-bridal-sewing-pattern?The pattern is for a gown which is empire waist w the skirt gradually getting wider but not overpoweringly so, choices of neckline or sleeves.“ON SALE 1990’s Bridal Sewing Pattern – McCall’s 8635 Empire Waist & Bridesmaids Size 8-12 Uncut, Factory Folded”If a person wanted it a bit fancier then lace sleeves, or designs sewn on w Swarovski crystals would do that.

I heard a story the other day at a Pecha Kucha in my town. The speaker is hitchhiking. A groom and a bride pick him up. They say, “Do you mind driving?” No, he says. They retire to the back seat and proceed to begin their honeymoon a trifle early, which was very complicated because her dress was very complicated. Hearing lots of struggling, he says, “Uh, this is my stop.” No answer from the back.He pulls over, walks to the side of the road and puts up his sign. So keep the design simple, friends!
Kidon Ha-Shomer about 8 years ago
It is my hope that Toni will skip the girlie bride gowns and opt to be wed in her formal firefighter dress uniform. Brad should be similarly attired [of course in the male version of the uniform]. Firefighters in bunker suits making an arch of axes as the couple exits the church from the wedding would complete the honors due a brave couple of the bravest.Of course having the couple called out from their reception to fight an actual fire would be the kind of complete irony for which this strip has been noted.

White (wedding dresses) did not become a popular option until 1840, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Victoria wore a white gown for the event to incorporate some lace she prized. The official wedding portrait photograph was widely published, and many other brides opted for white in accordance with the Queen’s choice. The tradition continues today in the form of a white wedding, though prior to the Victorian era, a bride was married in any color, black being especially popular in Scandinavia. Later, many people assumed that the color white was intended to symbolize virginity, though this was not the original intention. (It was the color blue that was connected to purity.) The white gown is in fact a symbolic Christening gown. It is a variation of the white surplice worn in the Western Catholic tradition by members of the clergy, church choirs and servers and the gowns worn by girls celebrating their first communion and at their confirmation and also by women making religious vows. Jews have gone to great lengths to follow these Western (Judeo-Christian) customs, whilst adhering to the laws of Tzniut. Today, the white dress is understood merely as the most traditional and popular choice for weddings.https://www.marryjim.com/en/page/show/id/30/template/history

I could definitely go with your idea. Giving her thoughts and feeling, simple but elegant would be quite suitable. I can’t see her in one of those “over-the-top”, hoop-like dresses with a long train, and frilly, poofy lace all over the place – just doesn’t seem to fit her style and personality.
