Flo: So how'd we get to this post-truth era? Ned: Well...a study at Stanford University shows that......most people who get their news on social media can't tell the difference between fake news and real news......And are more apt to believe just fake news because it's more sensational. Flo: So...because most people ah gullible idiots. Ned: Um...yes. Nicely summed up. Eddie: Wait...ya mean I could make a livin' at this?

How about the outright lies like “If you like your doctor you can keep him!” Or “Your insurance isn’t going to cost you a dime more!” from the anointed great community organizer!

No one in this world, so far as I know—and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me—has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.…………….

If you show people “stories” that reinforce their fears and biases, then the people motivated by fear will eat those up and circulate them more widely.

Facts along with common sense are now dead! These are the same folks who pass along every wild email forward they receive from a friend, who by way, was also too lazy to fact check it. I work in media and I can assure you every sensationalized email forward you get is 100% BS. If mainstream media isn’t covering it it is pure crap.

I think it happened when you could no longer tell the difference between Onion headlines and “serious” headlines.
Surely, you can’t be serious.

I don’t mess around, to get the real truth, I always and only read the comments on the cartoons. Other than that, I can’t trust news media, since they are biased.

Some dude went into a Pizza Shop in DC to break up Hillary Clinton’s Child Trafficking operation. The one she runs with Podesta. The one the Trump acolytes said was TRUE!! 1984 is here. Had to happen sooner or later. New Speak!

I don’t make a habit of watching the 24-hour news channels. I had CNN on for about 30 minutes yesterday, and I’m convinced a regular diet of that (or ANY of the cable news networks) would lead to a skewed sense of reality. Their business is to construct mountains out of molehills to fill airtime, and social media is just making that easier.

It was helpful before the actual news became incredible. Trump being appointed president by the electoral college ( he was NOT elected) seems like a bad dream, but I’ve been waiting to wake up for a month now. I hope I’m just in an irreversible coma.

Want to avoid fake news? Buy a newspaper (if you can find one).
If you’re going to go to the trouble to put ink on paper, you’re a little more apt to vet your sources and get it right.

Its’ going to be a long four years. I remember a line from a Robert B. Parker book. “She wasn’t always right, but she was always certain.” That is the mind set of conspiracy theorists. “They” are all out to get me!
whiteheron over 8 years ago
Does any one here remember the days when news programs reported the news and were not the news?
As to Stipple’s comment about reading instead of TV; if the meaning is reading the newspaper, well that certainly is not much better. <p. It is very sad that for the most part, everything reported by all news sources and “studies” needs to be suspect.

Fake news is nothing but a term put out by liberals to blame the liberal loss in the election. They believe that the masses are so stupid that they need the guidance of liberals to help them discern what is “real news” vs. “fake news”. They also created the term “alt-right” during the election cycle. They “gruber” the masses all of the time. Get over it people. Trump won fair & square with all of the lib firepower doing their best to take him down. You folks lie & cheat to achieve your end goal, but it finally caught up with you. It always will.
Dr_Zinj over 8 years ago
Have you considered that fake news has two purposes? First is disinformation, which is what the even drags in the only moderately gullible. The second is more insidious; it’s to cause people to stop looking at all news. Both are exactly what someone, or some group, would do if they want to establish total control over people. Zuckerberg’s public ambivalence about it is a strong tell that he’s directly involved with it. Which means he’s a sociopath that desperately belongs in jail, not running a multi-national information system. But you knew that already, didn’t you?

The schools need to make critical thinking a required part of the curriculum. It won’t happen, though. Too many people have a vested interest in the lack of it.

I have to admit I don’t get Fox News. They have a massive following of under educated under employed who believe every lie they tell or truth they distort even though Fox gets busted for lying just about every minute of the day. Many of their commentators are on the Koch brothers payroll and even when Charles Koch was asked why he spends so much money buying politicians and judges he said he doesn’t want to pay taxes or have government regulating his industries and “By God I expect to get my moneys worth”. And still their followers stand up and shout “Don’t tax the rich” and are happy to shoulder the burden themselves. Wow. Now that’s leadership.

We all hope that Trump will be a good President, just as we all hoped that Obama or Bush would be. As with them, we must allow time to pass and events to unfold before we either turn a blind eye or a critical gaze his way.
His record as a politician is entirely spotless so far, even though he has managed to amass a fairly substantial army of political enemies who mill about in the streets, shouting and occasionally burning or looting.

More false news. The term alt-right" was created by white supremacists to euphemise their true nature. At least AP, the style guide for mass media, has restricted it to in-quotes, in-context use and not as a label. Now you can attack the Associated Press as you do most cooperatives.
