As expected, Jacks asks Luann out for a date. What was unexpected was her rather quick acceptance of Jack’s offer, especially after last week’s “dithering.” Could it be that Lu got a peek at Jack and liked what she saw?
At any rate, it’s GOOD to see Luann once again, front and center, in her own Strip.
Three weeks in a row on the same storyline. The last time we saw that was the grand Souffle Lingerie non-takedown… which, is still an unfinished arc, as far as I’m concerned. I guess G&K are trying to remind us that LUANN is the main character here?
Go north a bit for your dinner, Jack. You could run into the occasional nude diner/coffee shop denizen in San Francisco, even in restaurants that aren’t necessarily identified as “clothing optional.”
Maybe she should show him the little Lisa Frank drawing she did instead of the actual assignment so he knows to stop wasting his time with her. Someone that open with and about their body shouldn’t be trying to date someone with that amount of sexual/bodily hang-ups; it’s a recipe for frustration and resentment.
A lot of restaurants we go into have a sign that says, “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service”. Doesn’t mention anything at all about pants, skirts or underwear. Someone needs to test that out.
Luann will want Jack to be wearing a lot more, and if her previous dating outfits are anything to go by, she’ll be wearing a lot less. For example http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2009/03/05. Of course there’s the classic Luann strip http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2011/07/28, but this (she claims) wasn’t a ‘real’ date.
Well it seems Luann hasn’t made up her mind about Jack – and kinda likes him. I just hate to see that being shallow and overconfident is the right way to bag Luann.
I have been saying she likes Jack, he is growing on her, and no giggles here (well she is a college girl so GIGGLE AWAY). I like the possibility of a romantic relationship between Luann and Jack, because I think he is being unfairly thought of as some kind of caveman. He is vain, but again he is a good friend to Nil, which tells one a lot that he is not the insufferable jock type that cannot abide anyone else different. So there is hope, and like I said, Luann is a college girl, growing into a young WOMAN, and Jack is the most MALE young man who has shown an interest in her, which she is reciprocating, as I predicted.
I’m not sure I’ve figured out how Greg is portraying Jack yet. Jack universally responds with flippant, humorous remarks. This could be taken as a person putting on a humorous front to overcompensate for self-perceived shyness. … … NAAAH!
There are a very few clothing-optional restaurants.
(Now, I’m thinking of something like being up early, and about, mostly undressed and the perils of trying to fry bacon..ouch. I figure the staff don’t have a no clothes code.)
Are we seeing the birth of a male stripper? The new Midnight Cowboy? The surprise guest at bachelorette parties? Will he exchange his robe for a trench coat and take his act out on the street? This bozo actually likes to display his goodies.
That smirk on Jack’s face in panel three is priceless to me, the young scamp, but don’t worry he is a real gentleman, I totally bet. I mean realizing that Luann is a babe (Ringo where are you troll person, we need the debate?) is all part of recognizing that she is forever beyond puppy (Aaron Hill) love, or late high school love (Quill) to a full-blooded, attractive, not perfect, but very male, male (sorry I keep mentioning that, but I think Greg is drawing him that way for a reason) love.
At least Luann is taking this in stride, and not being so self conscious as she was before. I don’t think she’s that serious about Jack – and Jack is being, well – Jack (not really a bad thing).
I’ve exhibited prejudice against Jack. How do I actually know he’s a moron? And it’s much more likely that he lacks emotional depth; but am I sure of that either?
Notice how Jack and Tiffany have been shown to be comfortable talking to people while wearing only a robe. hmmm. What does that say about their characters?
@SCHRODINGER’S DOG: Ordinarily, I would have concluded that both were very comfortable with their own bods (you may have been getting at something else!) But the fact is that we don’t know that Tiffany still has that comfort level since she gained weight. Remember that she was hiding under sweats for awhile…
Possible continuation of this arc: Frame #1: Luann & Jack leaving art class see that Tara has showed up to meet Nil and is laying a really good kiss on Nil. #2 Luann emboldened by Tara finishes dinner with Jack and resolutely grabs her IPhone. #3 Text to Jack, “Your place?”
Body confidence is not inconsequential. The interesting gray area for my contemplation is where healthy pride verges into hubris; like a fresh water river merging into the ocean’s salinity. (Not that salinty’s bad…!) Tally ho, Greg!
Having said yes, be aware Jack is a player. He did not ask you because you are special or unique or interesting. You just have the right plumbing. Just keep the stopper in your plumbing and you’re good to go and have fun.
@KENHENSE: Your scenario would be very disappointing to a lot of readers who are hoping that Luann continues a more balanced life, looking for both career direction and a possible soul mate. Not just a ‘fling’…
Luann and Jack may not be soul mates, but I think it’s great that she’s open to spending time with him. College is the time and the place to push your comfort zone. She’s continuing to grow as a person, much more than I would’ve thought she could.
that was a quick reply on Luann’s part. she’s seen the goods; what else will she say yes to? she must know what Jack wants , unless she’s totally naïve or just wants to be playful. I hope to see her back in art class doing the actual assignment.
So what if Jack wants sex from Luann? He’s supposed to. It’s only a question of whether he would accept no, and nothing about his manner suggests he wouldn’t. He’s not very aggressive.
@DOG: Has it ever been said that Crystal and Knute are going to college at all, let alone at Pitts? I’m not remembering that, if so. And I think the whole modeling thing was not the main point of this arc, and is just a way of moving the arc along, so to speak. And @NOTBORNYESTERDAY and RSH You might want to spend some time with Brooke McEldowney’s ‘toons; they seem much more in line with what you’re looking for…
@RSH: But I think Luann’s parents came to the art exhibit, too. It just seemed like one of those opportunities for the majority of the cast to get together, not necessarily because they were going to school at the same place. For some reason, I thought Knute had a job somewhere…
It was “artsy guy” Nil who brought up the idea of a “nudist restaurant” (the walls are not painted?), not Jack, who just plays along with the joke. He’s vain, but not evil. A date or two with him will be good for Luann….
