How about oh I dunno maybe a sofa? I am going to assume that they already have a TV as Less would have have moved in to the guest house with out one. Isn’t a pool table a rather large piece of furniture for such a small building?
Say you guys, do you think Les and Gunth are over Rosa? And wouldn’t it make for a great story if Greg brought Rosa back from Peru just to cause trouble for the boys as they both fight for her attention?
One Final thought all you Luann fans. Dont you enjoy the stories about the other characters more than stories involving Luann? To me they’re more interesting and Luann’s become a secondary character in her own comic strip.
Only if that rug is a Flying Carpet, Gunther. And You Put Le$ on it and it flies him to parts unknown NEVER-TO-BE-SEEN-AGAIN.
The real “problem” is, you have two polarizing characters here. One a source of frustration. The other a source of revulsion.
And they’ve been put together expecting something “funny” to take place. Actually it has. But Most of Us are so focused on Gunther Growing a Spine (and getting a Girl) and Le$ showing some degree of common decency, basic humanity and manners, that most of Us are missing the “joke.” There’s just way too much “Bad Chemistry” here. “Bad Chemistry” that should have been resolved months ago, long before Gulag was even built. Many “folks” argue that these two lads will one day be “pals.” I don’t disagree. But they should have been “pals” long before now, and BEFORE being placed in close proximity by one Al Gray, who really doesn’t care. Cooped together without asking either one what they thought of the arrangement, or lower himself to even talk to Gunther about it. What he’s done is the equivalent of handing two mortal enemies baseball bats, and locking them in a tool shed in the backyard and advising them to: “Settle things among themselves, otherwise don’t BOTHER me.”
I saw the end of a typical Halloween movie tonight. The bad guy got worse and worse throughout the film; the good guy took punishment after punishment; until 6 minutes from the end, the worm turned and the good guy killed the bad guy, In a particularly unique way and got the girl. Gee, I wonder how this is going to end? Only difference here is that we are getting punishment after punishment and coming back for more and it’s the fictional character who’s going to get the girl (and his manhood). Sigh
Yeah, Gunth, an area rug is more comfortable on your bottom than the hard floor—especially if you don’t have money left over for a sofa. Both boys seem to be equally clueless…in different ways. I see $15 folding chairs from IKEA in their future…
The Anchorage Daily News carries Luann, and, through the past few years, watching the artwork and characters develop has been a treat. Love Greg Evans’ (and now also his daughter’s) gift for conveying nuances of expression with a few lines, and love the complexity of characters we’ve come to know and like.
However, I spend four months every year in Vietnam. The American newspaper I get there (usually two or three days each week, from a cheery and very kind street vendor) is the International New York Times: a great newspaper, but no Luann.
So, when I’m overseas, I check Luann on line . . . and thus, last year, stumbled upon your Comments section. Have become totally addicted. @seanyj: No, charm school grad, not all of us loathe Luann the way you do. Of course you are entitled to your pleasant, brilliant and beautiful opinion. As I am entitled to mine. I invite you to visit the ‘toon called ’Zits’, with a main character called ‘Jeremy’ who would be much more to your liking, I’m certain. Jeremy is a stereotypical teen boy who consumes vast quantities of food bought by his parents, briefly held a job to pay for his car expenses but gave it up because it interfered with his social life, and constantly complains about how boring his ‘rents are. I’m sure it would entertain you much more than the character ‘Luann’, who you find so unenjoyable. Of course, I read ‘Zits’, but because it makes me laugh to see how a kid can be so self-centered that even when his dad is sick, he doesn’t notice anything except that his dad is a penny pincher..
@butterfly: Yeah, this is really stretching things. The first thing I tried to buy when I went out on my own was a table and a chair so I could sit somewhere to eat (my folks gave me a bed). Pool tables are old time stereotypes for bad guys who hang out in bars so they can challenge naive newbies to games and win lots of money (!) And I can’t remember any of my friends back then, starting in their own places, being more concerned about what was underfoot than about having someplace to sit and eat…
Just ignore Les, Gunther. Calculate how much furniture you can get for that amount and which ones are most needed. Do you really need an area rug? Wouldn’t a sofa be more useful? Or you’re content sitting on a kitchen chair?
Gunther doesn’t care about style, glitz or glamour. He cares about what is practical. Gunther and les could best be described as “the odd couple” where Gunther is a spend thrifty who only buys the necessities as opposed to les who spends carelessly on things he finds cool and stylish.
Gunther did well to get $783 for mom’s furniture. However they are going to need a sofa, a couple of chairs, a lamp, and some kind of table. Funny that Les is thinking pool table (boy stuff) and Gunther is thinking a nice area rug (girl stuff) – before either of them consider what will be absolutely needed. G & K have put Gunther into an abysmally deep hole already – please don’t torture us Monday by showing a pool table in the middle of an otherwise empty living room.
There are lots of unfinished stories. Which would you like?
Luann and Jack – will their friendship turn to romance?
Bernice and Piro – will she kiss him and get a tingle this time?
Tiffany – will she realize she’s still sexy, or will she lose weight and go back to her old self.
Art class modelling – Jack and Tara do it and see nothing to be ashamed of. Will Luann give it a try?
Lingerie – At the risk of being called a pervert (again) there’s a lot been unfinished on this scanty topic. Ann’s scam hasn’t been stopped although she wouldn’t be welcome at the Fuse. Will Tara continue to go commando or will she wear her new (if fake) Souffle undies? Is Les still interested? Is Luann still disappointed that nobody but herself sees her in her racy lacy panties? What’s she going to do about it (refer to Jack question)?
Will Elwood Druit come back and whisk Luann off to Paris, France? Is he also a fake?
This is going to work out, as just another version of oppousites attracting. Not romantically or anything of the sort, but I bet they end up a 21st century Luanniverse Odd Couple as they both are really different versions of the same boat. I will refrain from being judgmental and wait to see how this will be “drawn” out.
I think what surprises me the most is that Mr. Gray did not have the guest house pre-furnished for them. He seems to be quite a generous man with means and also like to have things his way, so furnishing it in a atyle or way he thinks the boys should live would be fitting to his personality, no? Am I off the mark here?Have a great day everyone! It is a beautiful, warm morning here and I am off to the garden to pick tomatoes and blueberries (much how I picture Irma, wearing her apron in her new vegetable garden :)
“Your father made that kitchen table, you know, It was his wedding present to me.”
“Oh – um, I didn’t-”
“I don’t see that corner table that was the only thing to survive my childhood. My great grandfather made it from wood that grew near his house. He wrote his name on the bottom.”
“Uh – well, I think we – "
“And that tall lamp, it was my mother’s. She made me swear never to sell it and I knew it’d be safe with you. Where is it?”
Head to Ikea, Gunthie, but wait until mommy gets back to pick out what you need. Oh, and maybe you can knit an area rug. Jeez this arc and these characters suck. This makes the Fay arcs look good.
Another day in the GnK summer doldrums. Ianm’s comment was more interesting than this whole arc. If it weren’t for mama’s message from Vegas this is the worst arc “entertainmentwise” in like forever.
I’m only sticking around for mama’s next voicemail. Maybe she’ll be having a hot rocks massage at the spa. Manuelito, her Latin masseuse, has offered her his special patty-fingers option for only $30 more. She’s considering it.
Oh well. The grass is growing nicely and the cotton is high. ♬Summertiiiiime and the livin’ is easy…♬
Hmm. Not much to say today, I guess. It seems here that Greg is simply repeating the same basic gag/idea in different permutations… over and over.
It seems really odd and atypical for Greg to have the same basic gag so many times in a row without having an identifiable direction to where this is leading. It seems to simply be a few week’s worth of “Odd Couple” scenarios replayed in slightly different situations.
There has to be some sort of point going on. Greg typically has his story arcs progress somewhere. Will there be some sort or climax or calamity that occurs this week? Some sort of cliff-hanger? I doubt that all of these “Odd Couple” vignettes showing Gunther and Les moving in together will just end on Saturday with NO progression into something more. But…. I have to admit it seems like this is a very much longer process to get there than usual for Greg.
don’t worry about a pool table showing up, they average around $1500, the budget just isn’t going to swing one. Pool tables are pretty useless overall anyways.
You want a pool table? Go to a pool hall or bar and play. That tiny guest house has no room for such a thing. How about a nice couch and chairs? If you want to splurge, how about a big screen TV? That would make more sense, no?
@SHAM YU R: The brilliant logic you display in condemning a woman who raised a kid as a single mother is equaled by your in-depth knowledge of the characters in this ‘toon. Your great scholarship is shown in the fact that you describe Les as Al Gray’s son.
I think we will go onto another arc on Monday, maybe even, gasp!! TIffany, but for all those gloomy trolls just wait, this about Luannverse, and Luann is the supermassive black hole in the center around which the rest revolves. That is a nerdy way of looking at it anyway. (LOL).
Monday – We shift back to two weeks of Brad/Toni/Old Smiley after they’ve finished demolishing the DeGroot Rental. This finishes out the month of August.
September – Three weeks of Luann/Tara/Jack/Nil
Last Week in September – Quill returns looking for a place to stay. He’s got a part in a local theater production which will run for the rest of 2018. He contacts Irma who fills him on current events. Irma talks Al into holding off on Selling her old house and instead renting it out to Quill, to which Al agrees. Gunther who’s had just about enough of Le$ takes a part time job and moves out of the Gulag and in with Quill, over Al’s objections.
Le$ is delighted at first over Gunther’s departure until he finds out he cannot function in the Gulag by himself. He breaks down and hat in hand, seeks Gunther’s help. Gunther helps him with the basics, just enough to get Le$ functioning on his own. As he prepares to leave, Gunther is STUNNED when Le$ says he’ll be glad when Gunther comes back to the Guest House.
Late December – Quill announces he has a part in a new play in NYC, and will be leaving soon. Gunther, who absolutely does not want to move back in with Le$, talks Al into continuing the rental arrangement. Al agrees on the condition that additional boarders are found.
January 2019 – Three young women answer Gunther’s ad in the local paper, for renters. The women, who lived in off campus housing are currently without lodging due to a Fire at their last residence. One young woman is ex military and is taking courses in the criminal justice system. The other is a brilliant Physics/Engineering Student. The third is an aspiring actress. All attend Mooney U. All three are friendly with wicked senses of humor, and like Gunther because he’s a good sport , good listener and an easy target. A turning point comes when Gunth helps one out of a very difficult situation, much to the chagrin, of the other two.
Rewolt, peasants. In memory of old Mother Russia, a new Great Purge will begin. The criminal, Uncle Al, and his new bride have already been exiled. His nephew, Lester the Molester, and his mother will soon follow. Gunther will plod the mountains of Peru, and Dez will walk the sands of her islands. Luann will protest, but be sent to a brothel in Siberia, run by the famous model, Tara. The now liberated strip will be taken over by a new star and renamed: Tiffany.
I thought much of September might be devoted to Bernice’s patrolling the dorm several times daily with her massive rule book under her arm, gleefully writing up infraction reports on the most trivial “violations”. Hilarity ensues! (OK, of course it doesn’t, but it’s still less dreadful than this ridiculous quibbling between housemates. Gunther and Les are each annoying individually, and the combination of a Gunther-Les comedy “team” is annoying squared.)
@bakana: You are far from the only one to say that, but I finally feel that an answer to it is needed. I am old enough to remember the movie called ‘The Odd Couple’ that was very popular before the very good television show, and the thing that made it work was not that the two guys were opposites who didn’t attract. What made it work was that they were friends before they moved in together, and tried to stay that way even though one was a slob and the other was a neatnik. And in this case, the guys aren’t slob versus hyper-cleaner. It’s me-me-bully/meanie guy versus I-give-up-but-inside-I’m-mad guy. Not an ‘Odd Couple’; just a couple of mismatched extras in their own lives. Like the furniture they just got rid of…
Just a thought … Les has a job (or at least he used to), is living rent-free and has no visible expenses. He’s gotten out of paying his mother back the money he stole from her. He certainly doesn’t spend much on clothes. He should be able to come up money for furniture. … Or maybe his job disappeared down the memory hole.
So much for any hopes for Gunther. Though he does assert his control of the income (and, surprisingly, Leslie accedes), his notion of how to spend the money is just as impractical and dumb as Leslie’s.
HERE is a thought. All of you griping about how boring this is, can take a break. The rest of us will get through the comments in about 2 minutes. Thanks for your time and indulgence.
Hurry and deposit the money in your bank account, Gunther or Les will find a clever, sneaky way to steal it. To be fair, pay Les $5/hr for the time he spent selling YOUR items.

This arc is so unpopular, they’re not all telling complainers to go away because they’re too busy complaining!

Seriously? Your first need is an area rug?! Oy!
