And Toni? Be sure to tell the dear little tyke, that her “dad,” Jonah, bought that useless toy. It’s about darn time to start driving “wedges” here……,

Shannon has the clarity of a guileless child, meaning she sees the difference between marketing puffery, and the relatively tame fun of a wind-up toy. Not that windup toys are lame to everyone, after all there is target marketing, but Shannon says exactly what is on her mind. Clarity, most adults don’t really have.

Smiley face wind-up toy? Sounds like something Toni dug out of the 1980s closet.

Maybe it was Grandma Daytona’s toy…

I find the I find the Jonah-Shannon-Brad-Toni arc somewhat straining. I believe Greg would like the Jonah character to conveniently slip from memory. Perhaps he would like us to start seeing the strips with Shannon as merely Uncle and Aunt interacting with their niece strips. After all, Shannon may be having a wonderful and rewarding time with her father when she’s not in the strip.

When kids get too much high-tech in the course of their regular lives, toys like this are underappreciated, and they’re always pushing for budget-busting, bleeding-edge new stuff all the time.

Of course someone bought a toy that was age-inappropriate for Shannon. That’s inevitable, given that her age changes up or down from story arc to story arc.

And who shopped for that gift? Maybe Toni should have asked Jonas what Shannon would like. perhaps this is a sign that Shannon is growing up; if she is going to be staying over at Toni and Brad’s on some kind of regular basis they need to realize that she needs mental stimulation; Shannon is in 1st grade. That toy looks like something you would buy for a cat.

I think this may be a thrilling toy for a child of the eras before video games in the mid-70s. Once video games hit the market, it was a game changer and kids now expect something better. Low tech wind-up toy? Ha! It makes a good science project where kids learn the mechanics of how turning a knob moves things.

Maybe Toni received it as a stocking-stuffer gag gift , and is now explaining it to Shannon.
