In the Luanniverse, there are no helicopter crashes, no deadly viruses and nothing worth rioting over, just a young woman and her dog enjoying a beautiful sunset. I want to live there.
The strips are produced well in advance, although it might be more possible to fast track a Sunday strip that does not depend on a story arc. Perhaps this was drawn just as the pandemic was gaining traction and our world was upended. Perhaps Greg knew things would grow ever more chaotic. What a lovely gift today.
NOTE: An opinion is about to be expressed that may differ from that of others. In case this bothers you, please feel free not to read this post. You have been warned.
This is beautiful; thank you to the artists…

I am so confused. What is the setting? I did not remember there being a giant, long sidewalk and picket fence leading up to Luann’s parents’ house. It looks like she has a couple of acres there.
We all need a spot of calm in our lives. The appreciation of the free things in life, like longer days, warmer weather, the beauty of the sunset, a content, warm pet sleeping contentedly on your lap. Things that money can’t buy, and a reminder of what life should be like without hate, anger and chaos.
That said, the color choices in today’s strip are rather unfortunate. It looks like an ominous fire approaching Luann’s neighbor’s house. The use of yellow and orange doesn’t sit very well. :-(
Lovely. I’m also reminded of one of my favorite Peanuts arcs, when Charlie Brown decided he was going to leave school and dedicate his life to making his dog happy. I seem to remember his teacher and principal wistfully understood that ambition.
While these strips are usually done weeks in advance, I can’t help but think that the Evans are speaking to the outdoor peace and quiet that we all need, right about now. It’s a far cry from the current chaos.
I know it’s just an optical presentation by Greg for our enjoyment and he had a lot of fun making it BUT it seems contrived. Is it a sunrise or sunset? Sun should be redder at sunset,BUT clouds should be brighter at sunrise.
This is such a beautiful and serene scene, with the name character and her dog peacefully appreciating nature so beautifully expressed in this comic (I love the little smile she has drinking it all in, beautifully drawn) I was worried it was a swan song comic, and suddenly Monday we would realize that Luann is over. I don’t think so though, I like to follow the theory that this is drawn in appreciation of and reaction to all the hell we are experiencing in our country now. Those who know me know that I am an African-American social justice based Baby Boomer, and my heart if very heavy right now, for good reason. I am an optimist by nature, and a Christian, so I believe in things getting better over time, humans have it in them, but at times like these that belief is sorely challenged. Even if this was not your intent Greg Evans, thanks! I know some here like to critique, colors to garish, fire somewhere, must be some kind of underlying bad thing coming, but that is human nature. I like the trolls I know on this blog, and appreciate them, just like I did in grade school, where the nuns would practically have us bawling over something, and the cynics would quickly have us snickering. Humans! Let the spirit in this set of panels be the one that guides us. Hey one good/great piece of news is Space X. I have not been this excited since the Columbia first roared to orbit. Humans! Thanks Luann and Puddles.
While I do realize there’s a lag in time with these strips, I can’t escape the feeling that this one has something to do with “return to normalcy…” somehow…. someway. I can’t explain it, otherwise. Maybe this one “preempted” the scheduled strip.
“Yet, even amidst the hatred and carnage, life is still worth living. It is possible for wonderful encounters and beautiful things to exist.” Hayao Miyazaki
I think this is just a Sunday panel strip to relax and calm down readers during the greatest crisis in our nation’s history….and we need something to relax and cool us down, given the absence of ANY form of relief from all these endless catastrophes. Forget about the lack of sports on TV….in my city, I can’t even take my dogs to the dog park and enjoy the peaceful sight of them running around, playing with other dogs, and being generally funny. All I have is an endless stream of horror coming out of my TV and computer feed.
