I am not sure which expression of Elvis is funnier, here when he is “snarking” up the Party Mix or the shocked scowl when he realized that he was eating the “senior” formula kitty food. Anyhow, yay for Goldie, getting a taste of the good life!!!!!
OT: Yesterday Zada, one of my elderly cats, had a stroke. The vet agreed that she didn’t appear to be suffering or even very conscious and that it would be all right to keep her comfortable at home until she died. I was holding her on the sofa and one of the former ferals, an old cat who’d seen a lot of death, surprised me by coming over and snuggling close to the sick cat who had not been her friend and purring loudly as if to comfort her. It was so touching! Zada died a short while later. It was as good an experience as something sad can be.
Goldie’s expression in the second panel is priceless, as she tentatively reaches out to taste her first treat.
OFF TOPIC: Yes, people, I’m back as myself on my trusty laptop. I phoned my IT guy and he talked me through taking the battery out, as it is deader than the proverbial doornail and will no longer charge. Now, I just have to jump through a few hoops so I can access my e-mails on my laptop. Every time I started to do this yesterday, I got distracted until I ran out of tries.
Paul seems to be a bit better. He was up for five hours yesterday. With the doctor’s blessing, I have again increased the amount he gets per hour through his feeding tube, and also the overall amount he gets each day. He seems to be tolerating it. His mom and stepdad are going to visit today, which should improve his mood.
Topher is my oldest cat, also of four, and he and Elvis could be twins. Very demanding of Mom time, inhales food like he’s been starved of it for a week (will shove the other cats out of the way of theirs because he ALWAYS finishes eating first), but with a little Puck thrown in – he likes to stay out of fights, his heart is too kind and gentle for that.
Off-topic, but in a similar vein to this story arc.
Yesterday, Bella came home from day boarding without her collar. That happens now and then, especially when they are busy. For Conan, it was no big deal, but I could tell Bella was upset the moment she and Papa came in the gate and he took her harness off. She just stood there, instead of racing over to me or taking off to sniff out everything that had visited her yard. She just look dejected and lost (the same way she did after we rescued her). When she did come, she was hesitant and cringing away. sob!
It didn’t take too long to realize the problem; she came into the shelter as a stray with no collar, and was returned to the shelter after her first adopter developed health issues … every time she was taken to the shelter, it was without her collar! I quickly located Conan’s old Christmas collar (it has a buckle and holes, so it could be adjusted to fit her much smaller neck).
Holy Smokes! Tossing out kitty treats like confetti! If I did that, my cat would be urping up the treats within 10 minutes. I can only put out 2 at time. If I happen to drop 3, it is a risk.
Look, I’m not saying that this quarantine has damaged our ability to communicate, but I went to the pet store the other day for some dental treats and couldn’t find them. I went up to the stocker lady and she smiled and asked (in words) “Can I help you?” I kid you not, all I could do was stare blankly at her for several seconds before reaching up with all four of the fingers on one hand and tapping at my jaw. I managed to actually say. “Cats! Teeth! Clean!”The lady smiled sagely and nodded. “Our dental treats are right this way,” she said and led me to the kitty treats. (They had chicken.) I finally managed to make proper sentences after a moment but it was a dang good thing the pet store lady spoke Isolated Nutjob.
Watch-out, Georgia! Have a magazine ready for when Elvis starts looking for a rug, shoe, or prized possession to hork on. You can shove it between him and his target to thwart the hork before it hits its intended target. Easier clean-up!
Nothing earth shattering, just slow wonderful progress. The horrible scruffy vicious feral monster is no longer recognizable as such. Trixie will be seen grooming as much or more than the others in the house. Always working on a fur knot or cleaning between the beans. If you recall, we originally had to clean her feet every 2-3 days and wet brush her.
The kitchen is her favorite place. She is most comfortable there but is now roaming the house at will. In fact, the last few days I have discovered her lounging on our headboard. With a look of “What? Shut your mouth before the flies go in.” She even comes up on the bed in the AM for short periods. Sits (on my feet) and stares at the sleeping Num-Num Giver. I exist only as furniture.
She will sometimes allow rubbies in the living room. Our living room is actually “free range” territory. Trixie and her 2 broods act as if they are wild cats on the African veldt, basking and stalking but rarely allowing the big dumb humans to approach. These are the same mush brains who assault you in any other room demanding rubbies and other good things.
In the kitchen Trixie shows the depths of her domestic yet aloof transformation. She rarely wakes up on her favorite chair when we come in and do kitchen things. If she does it is that one lazy eyelid and the look of “Hey, people are sleeping here.” Strange thing. If she is in the kitchen but not asleep she somehow always manages to cross your path and then stop. “No, this is just a coincidence, no I’m not looking at you (aloof aloof aloof) but I wouldn’t be terribly upset if you surprised me with some rubbies and butt skritchies. The brush? Oh I couldn’t. Well, if you insist, just a little.”
I don’t know if she will ever allow herself to be picked up, but the level at which she actually seeks out contact is stunning. An adult feral. Absolutely amazing.
Today is Goth Day, and they deserve it. No, not the modern “goths,” most of whom probably don’t know much about their historical namesake. It is generally accepted that historical Goths are culturally connected with the earliest documented inhabitants of a region in north Poland (Weilbark Culture), and there are cultural links to southern Sweden. From this region they gradually migrated southeast into a region roughly around modern Ukraine. It was from there that they began to interact and come in conflict with the Roman Empire.
Their reputation as a destructive force is based on their military prowess, but their destructiveness has its roots in Roman diplomatic bungling and cultural decline. Their treatment by the Romans was nothing short of barbaric. The Goths were, in fact, fairly advanced and civilized. They had a written language, though almost none is preserved, and used Runic inscriptions (remember the Scandinavian connection). Technologically they were advanced as the Romans, with the exception of architecture. What they lacked was central organization. By the time they began to achieve it, possibly due to Hunnic influence and domination, they had ample reasons for contempt and even hatred for Rome. Although they put an end to the Western Roman Empire, their destructiveness is vastly exaggerated in “popular” history and the writings of some late Roman authors. Their history is long, complex, and worthy of study. They are noted for their humane treatment of those they conquered, unlike many of their contemporaries. Unfortunately, their name has been misused in popular culture for centuries, if not millennia.

For you, there’ll be no crying
For you, the sun will be shining
’Cause we feel that when you get treats
It’s all right – you know it’s right
And your brothers keep eating, then they
Want some more
And you’ll have treats, you’ll have them, you’ll have them
Like never before
To you, we would give the world
To you, we’d never be cruel
‘Cause we feel that now you’re with us
It’s all right, you know it’s right
And we’ll always keep singing ’cause you
Know the score
That you are loved, you are loved, you are loved
Like never before, like never before
