Rat is an astute social commentator. I commented before, the internet and social media are like the new Tower of Babel. Communication and information are wonderful and exploitable. Here’s hoping we all have a better day today!
The internet is unchecked, as too much stuff out there is not factual! Sort of like an electronic" Weekly World News"! I remember one article “WWII bomber found on the Moon”!
Treat the Internet like any big library : know the trustworthy sources, verify anything suspicious, and ignore the dishevelled guys grumbling in a corner …
Oh, come on. Everyone checks their E-mail before they have their coffee, and while they’re online, they figure they might as well check out… um, pretty much everything.
I check my e-mail when drinking my morning coffee, then read my comics here, and then I go for a walk with my dog after breakfast. At that point, I’m pretty much done with the internet for the day and only have to decide what time to pop open that first beer of the day…..and trust me, it doesn’t have to be after noon!
This is an absolutely clear vision of my current situation. It seems the anonymity of the internet has empowered everyone to disclose everything, and stuff that should be internal gets out there in the name of honesty. TMI.
Get information from proper news sites (the ones that get sued for liable if they get it wrong), get laughs from GoComics, get off social media for peace of mind.
Every day is a new day. I Spent the last week doing some work around the house. Didn’t get all of it done, but got about 80% of it knocked out. When I engage my mind, and do something useful, I feel a lot better mentally. I put some good music on, and off I go. Today, it’s back to work.
I find tv news more troubling than Facebook. Hard to watch anymore. Of course I have some control over what I see on Facebook. Snooze is a good option. Another tip: go “window” shopping on the internet for something benign, like pots and pans or couches and you can influence the ads you see on Facebook. I am proudly ignorant of instagram and twitter. I have one person on instagram so I can see family pictures.
Pastis nailed it again. This (GoComics) is where I go for clever, fun comments. You guys are really great. Most other site’s Comment sections are just political platforms for people’s too-often-ludicrous or aggressive opinions.
“They’re called phones but they are really just portals into darkness” … that seems like a line that Charles Stross would use in his Laundry Files novels.
My flip phone is a portal to ridicule. I was once accused of googling answers at a Trivia event. I displayed my phone to the assembled multitude – and when the laughter ended, they offered to buy me a”real phone”. I demurred. My friends and family have goaded me for years, but I’m writing this on my iPad. lol
I must be the only person that actually likes the internet and social media. I admit not all of it is enjoyable, but then, is anything ever 100% desirable?

The internet is kind of like the Force – there is a Light (Good) Side – but it is easy to be drawn (tempted over) to the Dark Side.
