It was those who have B.S.ās that developed the vaccines. It was those who have B.A.ās that developed the Netflix content to keep us sane while we waited.
Even at this juncture in the young college graduates life, there are more doors open to him than there were before he graduated. If the job offering required a bachelors degree you better have one or be a good liar.
Got a MD. Will fight with insurance companies and get blamed for patientsā poor health (thanks fast food joint on EVER corner and low minimum wage) for $ (primary care; only docs paid less areā¦wait for itā¦ Pediatricians. Yeh! Great, because who wants healthy kids, right?!). Sad.
Education needs to be practical and applicable. 60 years ago, I was offered an immersion course in Mandarin Chinese, good for 24 language credits. While I was thinking about that and the time involved, a friend asked, āOk. Sounds great. Who else do you know who speaks Chinese?ā I enrolled in European languages instead. Came in much handier. Still useful for occasional crossword clue. :} )
Wonder what the gradās future might have looked like had he included some industrial training classes in his curriculum?
I am so tired of the anti-intellectualism of American society. I have a PhD in classical literature. I also have a good teaching position. I believe that literature is a record of the conversation the human race has with itself over the important questions of lifeāabout religion, about freedom, about how society should be organized, about justice, about human relationships. Literature is also a lot of fun. I try to help my students understand this conversation. I donāt tell them the answers. I try to teach them how to read so they can work out the answers for themselves. My students seem to find the conversation interesting. I have many repeat customers, students who take two or three courses with me. When they graduate they get all kinds of jobs. Iām not expecting them to become professors, Iām hoping that they will be thoughtful citizens.
Yawn. āKids these days jokesā have never really been funny, and given the totality of the situation (college is mandatory, and drives most young people into mortgage like debt), cruel.
You usually do better Wiley, but the āKids suck, and Iām a ludditeā strains are a poor look.
I once made the comment that someone with a degree in liberal arts is qualified to say āWould you like fries with that order?ā and my sonās girlfriends mother gave me a frosty look and told me that she had a liberal arts degree. My reply was āSo you know exactly what Iām talking about.ā We didnāt hit it off.BTW she was sales clerk at a jewelry store so I wasnāt far off.
I gnerally prefer my employees to have liberal arts undergraduates degrees. Iāve found they are more open and innovative. Then again, my business requires employees to look at the big picture.
Those with an inherent lack of integrity will always have a future in politics, advertising, televangelism, banking, journalism, or the stock exchange.

My plumber says no one coming up to do the job. I guess paying off college debt flipping burgers is preferable.
