Ouch! Dang Luann, you have an opportunity to rib Bwad a bit with some of those somewhat “embarrassing” photos that we all have from our youth and you are too tied into your WhatsApp, Line, Instagram or |YouTube to even notice. To go old school: what a putz!
All these people that are acting like Luann’s out of touch because she’s on her phone but let’s actually consider what’s going on here… people are looking in a book of memories. Sure they are sharing those memories and awww how nice… but hey you could also be creating new memories. You all could go to the beach or a public pool if no beach is handy. Could do a barbaque. Really anything to create NEW memories. Because let’s be honest while it can be fun to look at past memories, are you 10 years from now going to look back at the moment where you were looking back at the moment 10 years ago? Or are you in 10 years just going to be looking back at that moment 20 years ago?
I remember when cameras had film, and you were limited to 36 pictures per roll. People would take at most 5 rolls (180 pictures) on their two-week vacation. After the film was developed, the pictures would be put in an album, and people would take the album out every now and then and look at the pictures. Today, if you have a big enough memory card, you have basically an unlimited number of pictures you can take, and people take thousands of pictures on their vacation, post them on Facebook, and then never look at them again.
Why do all the holidays have to be about family? Some of us are alone and haver no one left in our lives. Constantly hearing about all these special days that we have no connection to is depressing. When is there a day celebrating the survival of the last member of a family, honouring those who are so committed to working that they have no friends, hobbies or interests outside of their job? Honouring those who will drop in the traces because without their job, their life has no meaning?
So many times have I seen this kind of scenario when traveling and I get to see families interact. Getting everyone on the same page in the era of electronic communication devices, which include real-time video, and software which aims to profit from social media, one nano second at a time, is quite a feat actually.
Not sure what the joke is. Luann wants to do some activity for Family Day. Does the rest of the family think sitting around looking at photos is a suitable activity for Family Day? I don’t think Luann is stupid for want to do something with her family besides sitting around.
Luann actually has a point. Yes, she’s missing the fact the family is enjoying old memories but the point is that’s all they’re doing. How about celebrating Family Day by doing something together that will become a happy memory?
Following a quick, second read of the comic, what I see is the family doing what they usually do, and LuAnn sees something on her phone alerting her to the fact that it’s Family Day. She then surprises the family when she announces it and they are all confused in different ways, since they are already involved with the family today. Anyone else see that?
In Luann’s defense, perhaps they should think outside the box and create new memories today as a family. Thinking about the good-old-days is fine until it becomes an addiction. There have been so many negative social dynamics for the last several years that people find themselves trying to revisit a distant past (i.e., before the internet, before COVID, etc.), when it was the last time they remembered an enjoyable family outing.
It’s not just teenagers guilty of this. I saw 30-something parents both on their phones at a table in the Butterfly World cafe while their 3-year-old was crying, but they ignored her. I really wanted say something, but I was dumbstruck, and of course, it’s none of my business.
Way back when the Atari VCS was the hot console to own, my family had a game night every Wednesday after dinner. Each family member got to pick a game we’d all take turns playing. We were happy back then.
Luann, you twit, you maroon, you phone-addicted airhead! The Family is doing something; you are not! Will you never grow up? Your brainlessness is dragging on way too long….

Can Luann really be that stupid?!?
Once again, you can sense Karen has disdain for the main character of this strip. Always making her look bad.
.
On a side note, Happy Family Day! The older you get, the more you realize family is really what’s important and what it’s all about!

And so it was decided that the family activity for Family Day would be to expel the lump with the blond hair.

Agree with Luann. This is probably what they do every Sunday. For a special day they should do something different.

Luann is in her own little world, she’s so oblivious to whats going on around her that her family could get up and leave and she wouldn’t know.
Or perhaps she’s suggesting doing something ELSE because she doesn’t like going through family photos.
