It’s not fair when the subject of the artwork is also the critic.

It’s called artistic license…..

Next, Calvin is going to draw an escape plan.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA WOW. Just wow. Calvin is so funny, I just can’t with him.

If Calvin doodled that school destruction fantasy today he’d be in custody.

Today, the school management would have Calvin arrested and expelled.

Another revenge fantasy by Calvin. He not only plots revenge against school authority but also his classmates who add to his torment. In one of his earlier revenge fantasies, he pointed out that many of his classmates were mean to him and threatened to take revenge on them when he became rich and powerful. He never singles out Moe. Moe just seems to be the worst of a bad bunch.

A few weeks ago, I printed one of Watterson’s comments about school – “I learned a lot at school but I don’t remember it with much fondness.” This is another excellent strip which shows how Watterson remembers his school days.

I like the lined paper that Calvin has been doodling on. It reminds me of a comic strip in a 1973-5 comic that I used to read called Buzz. I would be Calvin’s age when I started reading it. That comic strip was also based on a boy’s doodling on lined sheets of paper and was called “Sammy’s Scribbles”. Sammy had a dog called Fang and an older sister called Gladys.

I’ve just been reading the replies to my comments on yesterday’s strip. Susan00100 said that Mom and Dad would say that bruises and abrasions build character and I replied that they don’t believe Hobbes causes them. I now see that Susan00100 then replied “But if Moe caused them, Mom and Dad would turn a blind eye.” I don’t agree with this view. Mom did learn that Moe had extorted dinner money from Calvin and this led to Moe returning the money to Calvin and saying “Someone squealed and it will be a grim day when I find out who!” Another time, Mom learned that Moe was bullying Calvin again and had words with Miss Wormwood who seemed to scare Moe off for a time. Calvin credited Hobbes with scaring Moe off. Both Calvin and Hobbes seem unaware that everyone but Calvin sees Hobbes as a stuffed toy.

Pretty sure maintenance is the first thing to go, followed by the teaching assistants.

Do that today and the FBI would have him in handcuffs.

When is Calvin going learn that his actions have consequences?

I know these were done quite a few years ago. This one would be funnier had there not been a bunch of school shootings since then. I can imagine Parkland Cruz seeing this in jail and enjoying it for the wrong reason.

Instead of a “like,” 5-stars.

Careful, Calvin! These days, those types of drawing can get you arrested for conspiracy to commit mass murder!

I don’t believe Watterson would not have drawn this today, much less try to defend other than just a product of it’s time…. Even his comment against the detractors in the anniversary book was before our children were practicing lockdown drills. The humor was based on the total irrationality of the dream, and the resulting sympathetic schadenfreude over all our own bullies. We know of course now, there is nothing funny about little bodies and innocent teachers bleeding to death in schools.

If a kid drew anything like that today he would be expelled and sent to counseling and sensitivity training.

Awww! So many crucial subjects have been axed from the educational curriculum ….and it shows in this generation!

Well, I wonder where all the violent intention comes from?

Run the one with the F-15 next!

A lot of people like to say that public education failed the people when it’s really the other way around.

I’m surprised Calvin didn’t lob a few shells at Mo while he was at it.

This was probably a LOT funnier when originally published.

In Albuquerque Public Schools drawing any representation of a gun in school is a serious offense, and depending on context can get the student’s family a visit from the police to determine what is going on.

Considering the all-too-common violence in schools today, this might be a poor choice to re-run.

When I first read this strip (many moons ago!) I got a chuckle. Now, with all the school shootings we’ve had, it’s a bit cringy.

Would always take Calvin in my class over Jeff Dunhaim… Would not want the black board to talk back to me….

Calvin has been “doodling all morning”. That was me! Doodling to escape from reality.

I remember getting bored and doodling in class with pretty much the same outcome.

To be honest, this strip really shouldn’t have been rerun in the current era.

Love the jail crossed out and school written in. This is so clever and well drawn.

When I got older I started using unlined paper.

Nowadays Calvin would be arrested by the police as a potential school shooter for doodling like that :(

How I despise those blue ruling lines. Why will no office supply company just make us a $# blank sheet of paper?

Oh yes, I remember what that was like. But my drawings were never that violent!
