Really. Two weeks ago my team won in the last minute and last week it looked like they had pulled it out in the last minute only to lose on the last play of the game and on Saturday night they had a slow, play by play failure. But at least Pogacar has no way of winning thus year.
Just got back from my parents 71st wedding anniversary in Iowa. The political ads are already running. Same Trump ad every commercial break. Sometimes running back to back. Praising Trump for his drama… I thought he was siphoning off all the $$$ for his legal bills… Oh, wait, that would actually require him to be paying his lawyers.
I, for one, was sick of the drama and hoped it would end. Apparently as long as he draws breath it won’t.
“A free society thrives on Freedom of Speech”…..but I ask myself, “What do we do when corporate news agencies defile that Freedom and create propaganda and present it as news?”
I look at news of American politics for the same reason that other people look at traffic accidents. As a Canadian living in Canada, it’s not MY car and body I’m looking at.
I was stationed just outside Boston (on the WRONG side of Route 128) in the mid-1970s. I made a lot of money betting against the Red Sox. To add insult to injury, I was a YANKEE fan.
I don’t want to say I am old, but I remember Carl Yastrzemski (the original) as a rookie.
National Tv news stopped being an item for me when Peter Jennings passed and news became the minutes between glitz and hype for corporate slugs. Don’t know of a single news program, except evening news on one local channel, that I would depend on for clearly presented and reliably sourced news content. No wonder our electorate falls for a failed president/crook/liar/waste.
I blame the Romans and the gladiator games. The Romans figured out that if you can keep the population entertained [distracted], they forget how miserable their personal lives are.
Actually, the gladiator games began with the Etruscans [as did many other ‘Roman’ inventions]. When a leader died, as part of the funeral ceremony, a pair of warriors would fight to the death to honor his warlike spirit. The Etruscans held other games and chariot races as part of religious ceremonies honoring their gods.
The Romans expanded the practice for more secular reasons, often holding games 10-12 times a year. The games were an opportunity for emperors and aristocrats to display their wealth and power, to commemorate military victories, mark visits from important officials, celebrate birthdays or simply to distract the populace from the political and economic problems of the day. While some games involved prisoners of war, others simply involved local prisoners and the unemployed.
I enjoy seeing people getting upset watching a bunch of millionaires playing a kids game. Unless you’ve got money on it, enjoy the plays, moves and the like. It’s just entertainment.
in 2009 I was playing tourist in boston, as the boat went up the charles the guide pointed to a pile of twisted beams sticking out of the water and called it the Bill Buckner memorial. I laughed apparently being the only one on the boat that got it-and I was a mets fan but it was a grudge being held for 20+ years.
I would like that my D-Backs are letting me down — but I have been anticipating this all season. Every year they come out strong (this year stronger than most) and then lose it after the All-Star break.
I do remember that Dagwood (in the Blondie cartoons) was always getting things together for when “the boys” were coming over to watch “the big game”. Never did find out what the game was they were to watch – could have been American Football, baseball, any manner of ball games (even tennis). But never Soccer, of course.

Red Sox are tied with the Yankees, which should soften the blow of being behind the Blue Jays.

At the very least we can spend more time on sports and the weather instead of the illegal antics of tRump. Sports and the weather bring us together.
