Wow Opal must never watch TV or read books or anything! Surely a very common idiom that’s been around a long time? definitely heard it my entire life (40+yrs)
Opal, imagine how you’d feel if you and Earl were out in public, and Earl had forgotten to zip up his fly. Now imagine what would make that situation even more embarrassing.
It’s all fun & games until he sits down the wrong way, his jeans get twisted, & he gets pinched HARD in a VERY uncomfortable place…he’ll be a confirmed believer in the “banana hammock” for life!
In a similar vein, My father told me how his father’s mother wore these long, ankle-length dresses. She lived with them and when they were out in the field farming she would take a stance, and “ahem” water the crops. He found it outrageous. I said it was better than walking to the outhouse and back every time the tide came in.
Many years ago my 9 or 10 year old brother went off to camp with 14 pairs of clean briefs, name tapes sewn in and neatly folded. He came home with 14 pairs of clean briefs, neatly folded. I don’t think Mum ever found out if he just wore the same pair he had on when he left or he didn’t bother with any at all.

Arnold Schwarzenegger without the underwear.

I knew what it meant but it seems a strange expression anyway.
charliefarmrhere 11 months ago
Okay! for those still wondering, it means not wearing any underwear under your outer clothes.

Don’t think I heard it called that until 1994, in the first season of “Friends”.

A co-worker used to brag about “Going Commando” in the 1990s, that’s when I first heard about it!

Opal might be thinking, “Commando Cody? ‘Sky Master of the Universe’?”

I wonder if Nelson got that idea from Earl…

I worked in Physical Therapy for over 30 years and was always horrified at how many people came to clinic appointments “commando”.

The term originated with special forces like Navy Seals and Green Berets fighting in swamps not wearing underwear for practical reasons.

I never heard of that meaning until a few years ago. I guess it’s gaining popularity. Bad for the underwear business! ;-p

They used to call it “au naturel” back in your day, Opal.

I wear my pink pajamas in the summer, when it’s hot.
I wear my flannel nighty, in the winter, when it’s not.
But sometimes in the springtime, and sometimes in the fall,
I jump between the sheets with nothing on at all!

Good luck explaining to old people the new expressions.

Going commando is like a certain piece of furniture; a dresser without any drawers.

It means you are stuck using an outdated slang term from a 90s sitcom. It was used by a character generally depicted as a fool.
