As I commented yesterday, Hobbes was in the reality that Calvin returned to. That’s one of many things I enjoy about this strip. Hobbes seems at first to be part of the fantasy world but many story arcs show him as part of the reality away from Calvin’s dreams and daydreams.
I think that this was the only continuing story arc in the daily strips. Several Sunday pages show Calvin waking up in bed but I think that this was the only time it happened in a daily continuity.
I have mentioned this point before and someone claimed to remember the dream opening of this arc as one of Calvin’s daydreams. He certainly has plenty of daydreams in school but this time it was a nightmare about a school day.
I’m an old man, and I still get that dream. You know, the one where you’re in the final exam of a tough college course, and you realize that you didn’t attend most of the classes or study most of the assigned material? And the next day, you groggily realize that you don’t know which course you were dreaming about, and it might not be one you ever signed up for?…or that it might be one you did take?

Some how, some way, Miss Wormwood should get credit for him remembering to do his homework.

Just build a doghouse for him, Hobbes.

Better ask for a miracle.

My cat probably thinks the same thing.
I don’t scream, but I toss and turn so much, she’s always having to get up and lie somewhere else on the bed.
Of course, it’s partially her fault for insisting on sleeping between my legs, on top of the sheets.
Doesn’t leave me much room for maneuvering.

That’s great! Now Calvin doesn’t have to worry about it exploding.

Calvin’s support team (Hobbes, Mom and Dad) is really letting him down.

I’ve had nightmares where I went to class, didn’t have a book and had no idea what the lesson was about.

I don’t recall homework actually being part of grades. Projects in middle school were, but not homework like this.

Looks like your nightmare is about to become a dark reality!

In Cal’s life dreams and nightmares intermingle with fantasy.

Time to invest in some earplugs, Hobbes!

I’d imagine Calvin misses a fair amount of homework. Seems odd that this one assignment would trouble him to the point he has a nightmare.

Yep, in which we learn the first three strips in this arc were all a nightmare. At least Calvin didn’t have it while asleep in class!

There’s Calvin’s neighborhood, he’s on a corner lot? The Derkins’ are a couple houses down.
