If memory serves me correctly from when I followed this strip in the paper, John had previously warned April not to go near the river—and she deliberately disobeyed!
IMHO, she should have been punished for the events that followed! But, then, John and Elly are also to blame for not supervising their “oops” child!
I was about six years old when our family visited Saguaro lake, near Phoenix. My parents were not very concerned about water safety; I ventured out about a hundred yards on the shallowly sloped lakebed. Maybe 50 yards out there was a drop of something like half a foot, but nothing after that… until I found myself floundering with no ground underneath my feet. I remember being very concerned as I flailed for any footing. IIRC it was about ten seconds before my foot found ground and I came up sputtering a bit but very relieved. I don’t remember if I mentioned it to my parents. Sometimes life is like that for kids.
this is where i came in about 30 or so years ago when i first started reading this cartoon. know where this is going. i think i`ll skip the next few days saw this once dont want to read it again.
Farley to the rescue !! Will Farley survive or collapse on the bank of the river? Can’t wait to see Elle’s and rest of the family’s reaction to whatever happens next.
I told this story before. My wife was baby-sitting one night in her teens, and got home late. She forgot her key and sat down on her front steps to wait for her parents. A BIG German Shepherd came along and lay down in front of her. He didn’t make a sound. Two hours later, when her mom and dad showed up, his hackles went up and he growled deep in his throat. My wife said “It’s allright; they’re my parents.” Again, without a sound, he got up and left. I firmly believe that, had there been trouble, that dog would have died protecting my wife, just as Farley gave his to save April.
In case anyone doesn’t know, drowning normally looks a lot quieter than it is commonly portrayed, as here. People don’t have the extra energy to yell or wave their arms – they are using every last bit of what they have to try to stay alive. There are videos you can watch to see people who are actively drowning. The ones I have watched all were rescued, but you can see what it looks like before that. It’s scarily quiet.
I don’t typically read the comments. In this case, I didn’t read them until the story concluded just for the reason that the spoilers just can’t keep their mouths shut. I’m astounded by all the snotty, uncaring, clueless comments from people.

This story line got so many people angry… but when you consider, it shows the love in Farley’s heart.

This storyline absolutely wrecked me as a kid… and showed me how good and moving storytelling in comics could truly be.

I never had a dog who was intelligent enough to rescue a girl as Farley does here. Did he have the training of Lassie?

“Déjà vu all over again” This is a rerun of an old strip, goes back many years ago. The dog dies and they bury him by the river.

This is one of the “FBoW” sagas best stories … won’t comment further … must view it all the way … Great story.

Back in 1943, the comedian Lou Costello’s toddler son found a loose slat in his playpen…strolled out and drowned in the swimming pool.
