Comics were my escape from bullies at school (teachers as well as children) and bickering parents who eventually divorced.
Depression still set in.
Creative people are sensitive souls…
lf l had my time again, l’d nip it in the bud with bullies and strike first. Put an end to it before it begins. I’d tell teachers respect can only be learned by demonstration. It’s a two way street.
Happens to all of us. My Dad taught me to stand up to bullies… the only reason they do it is because they can get away with it. It was terrifying, but true!Years later I had to work with a girl from middle school and while I remembered that time like it was yesterday, without me mentioning it, she started talking about how good of friends we were back then… oh myyyyy worrrrrd…
Another pleasant human contact to brighten Calvin’s day. Well, we’re not sure if Moe’s human or not. Moe might be the “missing link” that most would rather not find.
What makes this especially cruel is that there’s nothing in any of the panels to indicate that Calvin’s even in Moe’s way. They appear to be in a wide open space with no one else around.
So my dad did some time in the pen; and it so happened that he met my high school algebra teacher on a parent-teacher night. They instantly recognized each other. Dad came home and told me about it. My teacher had been the warden back in the day and their reunion was totally friendly, laughing about shared experiences, etc. The teacher pulled me aside before class the next day and suggested we leave the past in the past and not talk about it. Soooo, I was the only student in my class one day when a huge bully in a bad mood took a swing at my teacher. That kid was on the floor, trussed and pinned so fast he didn’t know what hit him. They train those wardens well, I guess.
I don’t have anything to say but I accidentally pressed the “Comment” button and it said “Please enter a comment” and it was so polite I felt I had to type something .
When we were Calvin’s age my brother was the one that always got picked on, smaller than most and he wore glasses. After the first time he was bullied (the bully did beat him up for fun because he could not fight) I found out who was doing the bullying so the next time I had a chance I asked my teacher if I can use the restroom, made a bee line for my brother’s class and it took a moment for the bully to realize why I was there, I buried my foot in his fat gut and he fell groaning in pain, Mother Principal suspended me for a week I think but nobody touched my brother after that. I was not a bully but I could scrap with anyone.
I believe that the backstory for Moe is that he wasn’t very bright, so he’d been held back a grade, perhaps more than once, so he was notably bigger than the rest of his classmates.
It’s a dilemma for educators. Say a kid is OK in English and history but just doesn’t have the knack of adding and subtracting. For social reasons (apparently only that) you send him on to the next grade, where he’s supposed to have the hang of those math skills to be able to handle multiplication and division. But he doesn’t. Then he’s hopelessly lost, and doomed for future classes in algebra and geometry. But if you don’t promote him, next year he’s out of place socially and bored to tears going thru the English and history all over again.
I don’t think anybody’s ever come up with a good fix for this.

My mom was a CubScout Den Mother. One day one of the boys, a perpetual bully, was acting up in the Cub Scout meeting. She called his dad to come pick up the boy. When the dad arrived, he practically beat his son. My mom was appalled.

Same with Moe’s parents. They are the reason he exists after all.

“If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man’s life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.”
Both are quotes from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Arbitrary reality interrupts existence, and fantasy placates temporarily until the realization that reality was unaffected. What’s the answer?

This strip is an excellent example of why the idea that creative expression helps one work through one’s traumas is perhaps a bit questionable.
