Now the Dupont slogan jingle is stuck in my head

It’s at the bar. Your brother isn’t necessary.

That which does not kill you makes you crippled for life.

Yes, people learn more from their mistakes than their successes.

But what they learn varies by the individual.

Some learn what not to do next time, while others learn to blame it one somebody else.

That which does not kill you, leaves you maimed, disfigured, and with unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Losing a leg does not make you stronger unless you are an arm wrestler because it gets you into a lower weight category. It makes you weaker at carrying stuff through airports.

The look on Joe’s face in the last panel reminds me of the face my dad would pull when as a kid I’d ask him “If I tell you the truth about what happened< will you promise you won’t get mad”. I was very like Danae as a child. Sorry Mum and Dad.

Sorry to say this, but even approaching 250 years old, our country is still learning from its mistakes, and it is to be hoped that eventually emerging from this present Mistake will make it stronger somehow.

Joe’s happy place disappeared around the same time Danae learned to talk.

I would have thought the gaslighting and incompetent handling of a pandemic that killed over a million Americans and tanked the economy was a catastrophe but Americans unfortunately need more of a lesson. Lets hope the inept fraud we elected can bluster and distract his way through the next four years without actually having to govern again.

The lessons learned through negative reinforcement last the longest

I don’t have time to make every mistake there is, so I don’t have the luxury of committing any of them more than once.

I had a crippling case of the flu once and came up with this variation: That which doesn’t kill you will make you wish you were dead.

Two children are told not to touch the hot stove. One does, and the other does not. The second child learns something by watching the first, but the first child both learns and understands.

I’ve just been reading a new book (by the excellent science writer Dave Sobel) about Marie Curie: if ever there was a case of a person who, with her husband until a random street accident killed him, worked at a dangerous project and succeeded, it was them. Only person (of any gender) to win two Nobel Prizes in two different fields, and yet always humble and generous. One of the largely-unknown aspects of her contribution that’s covered in this book is how she mentored so many young (mostly women) scientists who went on to also make major discoveries. Interesting stuff. So sometimes that which (could) kill us ends up becoming something really important, if we work through it successfully (and live long enough!)

These only work for some people. There are those who continuously make mistakes and never learn a thing.

God, wonderful God, never gives us a task bigger than we can handle. Proof of this is that everyone who’s ever been given too big a task is dead. This is so reassuring.
