He may have been doing what he loved, then there was a change in management. Fortunately, he had enough money stashed away to be able to afford retiring early.
I feel Frazz shouldnāt be criticizing the kidsā adult family members, even mildly. In addition to the suggestions in the other comments, people can love what they do but suffer burnout or health problems.
I absolutely loved what I did for work. The killer was the driving I had to do to get to my customers locations. Now as a retiree, I get to do what I love and remain at the home I love. Life is grand!
My 83 year old doctor moved her practice from Pacific Palisades after the fire in January destroyed nearly the entire town and more, She loves her patients and has zero interest in retiring ā and this is after a serious fight with cancer during covid that nearly took her life.
This strip makes no sense today. They both imply that retiring āearlyā (what does that mean?) is somehow wrong. Theyāre both making bad assumptions.
The 1997 coincidence of a successful prostatectomy in Feb, the end of my 25th year of teaching, and my 67th birthday convinced me to retire. For the last few weeks, colleagues told me āStop smiling!!ā I didnāt stop until June 7th.
We moved 75 miles away and began a new phase. The next August and the opening of school brought not even a twinge of regret. Then I knew I had definitely retired.
You can do what you love at work, but have to contend with miserable bosses, co-workers, customers, commute, etc. I enjoyed what I did, but the mounting paper work and having to answer to a chain of management (from a merger) who knew nothing of the business other than āHow much money are we making?ā drained any enthusiasm I had for work. Iām retired now, and not one time in 3 years have I thought āGee, Iād rather be working at the olā job today.ā Iāve worked hard my entire career and am now truly enjoying retirement.
Frazz is a janitor because he loves being around the kids. He can afford not to, just live on his songwriting. So does he think his janitor role is not āworkā?
I loved what I was doing for (most of) the 45 years I worked. Would have gone on longer but it was obvious that things were changing and not for the better. Rather than wait and suffer the coming angst, I got out at the end of the feel good period. Better memories. Or, more likely, fewer bad ones.
A friend of mine hired a moving company to haul her stuff to her new place, and the lead worker in the moving crew looked to be about 55-60. She remarked that he must really love his job to still be at it, and he replied āI hate it. But I dropped out of high school, and this is the only thing I can do. I only wish Iād been able to put aside enuf money to retire, but Iām going to have to do this for another 10 years at least.ā
It seems to me that the richest society in the history of history should be able to do better than this for its citizens.
I really enjoyed my last job but I didnāt want to delay retirement. I want to travel while I can. Iāve lived to be older than either of my parents or either of my sisters and didnāt want to push my luck. Now that weāre settled and have the time weāre seriously looking to travel. Assuming Americans are still welcomed in the UK and Europe.
